Knee length skirt with knee length boots

PeaceLoveAndCandy · 18/08/2021 11:41

Is this a dated look? I believe is what suits me best. I am short and curvy, and midi/maxi skirts don't look right on me. I am 50 and won't wear a mini skirt. Anyone seen plain black knee length skirts? Admittedly, what's knee length for me is probably short for most women...

I think skirts and long boots can still look good, especially if the top of the boots are higher than the hem of the skirt. Olivia Palermo does this look well (although she does every look well IMO Grin ).

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie

Oh ffs. Wear what you like OP, if you like it and it suits you.

This shit on here about things being 'old lady-ish' and dowdy makes my blood boil.

Very slightly over the knee or just on the knee with a small gap between the top of the boots will be fine. Honestly it will. It's a look that lots of people wear in Autumn/Winter whatever the fucking fashion police on here think.

A skirt and boots won't make you look 50. Being 50 is what makes you look 50.

Floisme · 18/08/2021 18:15

OP has asked in a style forum if something looks dated
Correct. I can't see her asking if it makes her look older or 'old lady', just if it looks dated.

presumably because she wishes to avoid looking older than her years and cares about looking somewhat stylish,
Can you not see how, with that sentence you conflate looking older - yes, even older than your years - with looking unstylish?
And can you not see why this might make some of us annoyed?
Not defensive - that's how I would describe the typical reaction whenever this is pointed out (see timely illustration above) - just annoyed.
And tired.
Because this isn't a one-off. It's incessant.

Hear hear @Floisme

Dated/older than her years/unstylish are not interchangeable.

OP has asked in a style forum if something looks dated, presumably because she wishes to avoid looking older than her years and cares about looking somewhat stylish, so is using mumsnet to garner a range of objective opinions. Of course she can wear what she wants and if she feels most comfortable in the knee boots then go ahead. I wouldn't judge someone for it or mock them in anyway (which I think is why people get so defensive) but this is the style board and this is my honest opinion on the aesthetic.

"Older" = "Somewhat unstylish" does it?

A pair of boots and a skirt won't won't make anybody look older or unstylish. It's about so much more than that.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 18/08/2021 18:43

No. Flo is right that this shit is incessant. The OP hasn't said anything about worrying about looking her age. This is a look that she likes and that suits her.

Getting dressed isn't about following rules, especially rules decreed by randomers on the internet who could be wearing anything at all, whilst setting themselves up as judge and jury.

MarleneDietrichsSmile · 18/08/2021 19:23

Yes, everyone can do what they like…

Including going onto a forum, and asking for style advice

I think there is nothing wrong with describing clothes as “dated “, it is nothing to with ageism just that certain clothing combinations have been around for a number of years and are now no longer edge of fashion

Whether you want to be edgy or dated is a choice.

Nothing to do with the age of the wearer

People are so touchy! I like to talk about clothes and what works now, and why, without being shot down ✌️

Pinkcadillac · 18/08/2021 19:26

Is this the look you're looking for OP? It can work well if you find the right skirt and boots

Right ok I’m wading in - waves a white flag - what would the fashion police wear with this skirt here

lindyloo57 · 18/08/2021 19:40

I agree with Marlene, people are asking advice, its not about looking old, its more about looking up to date/ modern and not looking dated.

HundredMilesAnHour · 18/08/2021 19:57

Whether you want to be edgy or dated is a choice

If you want to be edgy, MN isn't really the place to come for style advice.

Luckily that's not what the OP asked.

Actually, knee high boots were a micro-trend last winter and are back again this winter. Of course it needs to be the right style of knee boot (so chunky soles) but the OP will be bang on trend. And if you don't believe me, read what Who What Wear is saying about boot trends this autumn:

www.whowhatwear.co.uk/high-street-boot-trends/slide2

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 18/08/2021 20:06

Those pictures seem to suggest that there isn't one particular style of boot that's 'in' and pretty much anything goes.

Is the only choice between 'edgy' and 'dated' and what does 'edgy' even mean? The only place I ever hear it is on here.

I do think that by the time you're 50 it's much more about knowing what you like and adapting slightly as wished than it is about making sure you're wearing whatever Vogue or Zara or the Kardishians or whoever thinks you should be wearing. There's much more room for much more choice than there ever was before imo.

Mary Janes!
MrsPear · 18/08/2021 20:22

@InTheNameOfAllThatIsHonest Mary Janes? In winter? In the uk? I don’t drive so if I wear that skirt I wear layers which includes knee boots … don’t like wet soggy feet. I think it surely has to be the style of boot … knee highs were all over the catwalks. A lot had a thick sole. Plus it what you wear with a knee skirt …. Fitted knitwear which high lights curves can never be frumpy surely ….

MrsPear · 18/08/2021 20:23

My point op is all depends on styling imho. I don’t think sweeping statements are particularly helpful.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 18/08/2021 20:25

I bought some knee high heeled boots that I haven't had much chance to wear yet. Am intending to wear them with pencil skirts and turtle necks and hopefully with some of my midi dresses too.

PeaceLoveAndCandy · 18/08/2021 20:26

Oh my god, clunky chunky boots are in!!! That's music to my ears!! Grin

LordOfTheThings · 18/08/2021 20:37

Knee length boots paired with a knee length skirt is pretty much impossible to look anything other than a pensioner.

Oh this is such nonsense. 😂 Besides, how exactly do pensioners dress? Twin-set and pearls? Housecoat and slippers? The ageism just continues ...

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 18/08/2021 22:38

I saw my mum, a pensioner, last week. She was wearing flared jeans and trainers. Saw a colleague in her 30s wearing a knee length dress and knee boots. Saw 20s daughter wearing an Arket shirt dress and ankle boots. To identify an outfit with an age group is just total rubbish these days.

MNmonster · 18/08/2021 22:53

I think it's hilarious that knee high boots are considered to be what pensioners wear, when I think that all the midi skirts and floral dresses with puffy sleeves that people have been wearing all summer is exactly what my granny (God bless her soul) would have worn back in her 80s.

Personally, I'm short and bang on knee length is the most flattering skirt length for me. I also think ankle boots with a skirt on short people just makes the legs look shorter, even with a short skirt.

Knee length A line skirts with knee high boots was something I wore a lot of back in the 00's. I have a lot of skirts and dresses similar to the ones @MrsPear linked and I am struggling with what to wear with them in winter. I do think knee high boots do work best.

PeaceLoveAndCandy · 19/08/2021 08:07

@Pinkcadillac

Is this the look you're looking for OP? It can work well if you find the right skirt and boots
Yes @Pinkcadillac, although I wouldn't wear a skirt with a shirt tucked in. I'd probably wear it with a thin fitted merino sweater. Finding knee boots that fit me and are comfortable to walk in is a nightmare. For me, the heel needs to be 6cm high (preferably chunky) and the shaft, no more than 38cm long. Sometimes it sucks being short.
OP posts:
MaMelon · 19/08/2021 08:16

I'm with you there @PeaceLoveAndCandy - so many knee length boots are too high for us shorties.
I've also got slim calves, so they're often too long and too wide - like I'm wearing a pair of men's wellies with heels, which is not a good look.

NalPolishRemover · 19/08/2021 09:00

I'm not loving most of the boots in the who what where link....

Although....I already own the whistles dahlia ankle books & I adore them so maybe there's hope for me yet!

I think I'm going to try some knee high boots this winter. I'm considering a 70s vibe perhaps. My main issue is I mainly wear trousers so still considering options.

I'm in my early 50s & agree that the ageism often trotted out here is depressing. Especially since many of us in this age bracket have a keen interest in fashion & have more disposable income to spend o n it now! I'd hazard a guess that many of us are far more stylishly dresses than the posters who bleat on about things being 'old lady' fashion !

lindyloo57 · 19/08/2021 10:59

MaMelon I have a flat pair of suade knee high boots from Gabor that they seem to do every winter, I'm short 5ft3 and have slim legs, so they fit pretty close to the leg, I also have a knee high black leather ones with a stiletto heel only 3 inches high, bit pointed had them a while, again very slim on the legs, I know some think of gabor as frumpy but these boots style are just like others I have from dune/ m&s etc.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 19/08/2021 11:07

I've got old Whistles boots which are essentially Dahlia but minus the laces. The heel might be a bit wider. Love them but they are definitely taxi boots. They look good with lots of styles of jeans but I can't make them work (for me) with skirts.
