If fascinators are out for weddings what is in?

I have a fancy wedding to go to next month, and have my outfit all organised apart from headgear.

I keep reading on here that fascinators are over, so what should I wear?

I love hats but they trash my curls.

What about an embellished headband?

Any advice much appreciated 🙂

@GraceMelbury

I have the light one - it's lilac IRL, which goes really well as I have lilac hair.
Excellent!
shallIswim · 12/08/2021 20:44

Didn't wear any headgear for DS's wedding in 2019. Only a couple
Of fascinates overall.
Going to a wedding in two weeks and have no intention of wearing head gear

Trudij123 · 12/08/2021 20:49

@GraceMelbury

Thanks Trudi I love the dress- I bought it at Easter in the sale it wasa mega-bargain! I've been holding off on getting a hat incase the wedding is downsized but 🤞it will go ahead.

I've ordered the accessorize hat - do you think it will go? The flowers on the dress are a very dark navy.

I think it’s perfect Grin

Thankyou @PrincessNutNuts - I’m very lucky with her, she’s gorgeous!

Flyinggeese1 · 12/08/2021 21:19

OP yes it look like it certainly will go! Looks perfect.

Bertiebiscuit · 12/08/2021 21:55

Headgear is not compulsory, but headbands and tiaras can be fun depending upon the type of wedding - hats you would never normally wear and especially blasted fascinators just make most women look uncomfortable and frumpy tbh

Standrewsschool · 12/08/2021 22:01

Love that Light in box hat. I’ve got a wedding next April. So long since I’ve been to a wedding, I’ve lost count at what’s ‘in’.

Woodswoman · 12/08/2021 22:04

@BuffySummersReportingforSanity

Ooh. I think I'd do pillbox hat and veil if I were going to a smart wedding right now. I do like that full-vintage "hatinator" linked upthread though, with the triple pearls and red lipstick.

Fascinators do look a bit... hen-party-at-Ascot to me at the moment. Sorry.

I like the idea of pillbox and veil. Do you have a link to the one you were thinking of?
Standrewsschool · 12/08/2021 22:06

And the headbands look very 80s

Pogostemon · 12/08/2021 22:10

it's been claimed for years (at least a decade!) that fascinators are out. Not an opinion that's reflected in actual weddings.

Yes, but actual weddings are attended by all sorts of people, many of whom I would not ask for fashion advice. I hold to my firm belief that fascinators are frumpy.

CMOTDibbler · 12/08/2021 22:12

I wore a hatinator (actually a boatinator according to the milliner) to DNs wedding recently. I love a hat, and teeny ones don't suit me at all, so it's all or nothing.
Being on a headband it didn't mess my hair up for when I took it off

Standrewsschool · 12/08/2021 22:12

Surely this is a hat not a fascinator?

hat?

StCharlotte · 12/08/2021 22:14

Boatinator?!

Hops off to Google...

StCharlotte · 12/08/2021 22:17

Google has failed me! What is a boatinator please CMOTDibbler?

CMOTDibbler · 12/08/2021 22:32

It is apparently to do with the shape of the hat part- mine was largely a boater shape with a shallow crown. I just tried on things till I found something I loved

HundredMilesAnHour · 12/08/2021 22:33

I was invited to a US wedding and was bereft when I was told hats aren't a thing for weddings

You should have worn a hat anyway. I went to a US wedding and wore a (huge) hat. I was the only hat wearer - and the only non-US female guest - but everyone LOVED it. It meant that everyone wanted to talk to me and by the end of the reception, I can safely say that every person there had tried on my hat and had their photos taken wearing it. Years later, the bride still talks about my hat. Grin

MakeMathsFun · 13/08/2021 02:10

But some whacky alien head boppers. You'll stand out from the crowd and after a few drinks, everyone will want to wear them!

Omg like Alice in the Vicar of Dibley!!
Ohbeeryme · 14/08/2021 03:32

@Standrewsschool it’s probably due to it being on a hairband

NeedWineNow · 14/08/2021 08:39

I've been watching Downton Abbey on my commute and OMG the hats and clothes in that are fabulous. We're going to a wedding next year and I've already bought a dress but am sorely tempted to try and channel my inner glamorous 1920's complete with hatGrin.

Iamthewombat · 14/08/2021 09:30

The Accessorise hat(inator) will look great. It suits the style of the dress.

Re the supposed ‘fascinator hate’ and the “wear what you like” comments: most people attending a wedding want to look stylish and of the moment. There aren’t that many dressy occasions in most people’s lives. So it’s normal to want to know whether what you are wearing is fashionable or (as a PP amusingly pointed out), old hat.

The thing about fascinators is, so often they are an apologetic tuft of feather and straw parked on the side of someone’s head. When they first became available (maybe 15-20 years ago)? they tended to be big and extravagant and looked fabulous.

The problem with that sort of style is that it gets watered down through the high street, then it’s adopted by everyone including your auntie Doreen, then it loses its allure a bit. The point of headgear at a smart occasion is to make a statement, and with the majority of fascinators that statement is “I went to Debenhams and thought, I need to look a bit dressed up and this will do”.

Not all of them. I really liked the twirly straw Caprilite fascinator the OP linked to because it is large and extravagant. Her choice of the accessorise hat is better though.

Me, I like a huge hat. Huge.

GraceMelbury · 14/08/2021 10:06

Thanks Iamthewombat! I love huge hats too, but unfortunately my curly hair doesn't.

I'm hoping the Accessorize one won't trash my hair, but if it doesn't work I'll go for the other one.

I had the rest of the outfit organised ages ago, but I've been holding back on headgear because I will wear the dress and shoes again, but won't wear a fancy hat/hatinator/fascinator for anything apart from a wedding, and I wanted to be sure the wedding will happen re covid.

Aethelthryth · 14/08/2021 10:08

Fascinators only ever looked good on girls and very young women. Proper hats are much better on everyone else

towers14 · 14/08/2021 20:46

@towers14

I'm going to wedding tomorrow and I'll be wearing my new fascinator. Hadn't realised they were out🤷‍♀️ who gives a shit?
Update from my pp, wedding was fabulous but out of say 50 women, only 3 wearing facinators.....obviously they are out🤷‍♀️
GraceMelbury · 14/08/2021 20:57

Interesting towers and I hope you had a good day!
We're any women wearing hats rather than fascinators?
