If fascinators are out for weddings what is in?

GraceMelbury · 11/08/2021 09:07

I have a fancy wedding to go to next month, and have my outfit all organised apart from headgear.

I keep reading on here that fascinators are over, so what should I wear?

I love hats but they trash my curls.

What about an embellished headband?

Any advice much appreciated 🙂

I really like it.....but would also call it a fascinator.

Really though.....if you can't wear a fascinator to a wedding what is the world coming too....you will look lovely. Enjoy your head gear....whatever you call it!

@ExpressDelivery

In my world the only people who wear hats of any sort to weddings are the mothers of the B&G. Very unusual to see "ordinary" guests wearing hats, even at quite posh dos.
I went to a quite posh do two years ago (a fancy rich type set of guests, in a very posh area) and hats were definitely worn. It would have looked like you were badly dressed to not have worn a hat at that wedding.

The hats were not huge "mother of the bride" type hats (a few were, but they were deliberately oversized for effect and very trendy). They were mostly pillbox sized (but not actual pillbox style, IYSWIM).

There were also the smaller-sized saucer-type hats on a hairband with some embellishment - that was definitely ok too. However, fascinators (a small, mean little figure-of-eight of stiff ribbon with a bit of feather on a thin metal headband or hair slide type) were not present, and very few had no hat. It was a really smart do.

Flutteringwings · 11/08/2021 23:00

OP, have a look at occasion hats and fascinators on the John Lewis website. Lots of choice there.

I would say the one you linked is a fascinator. To be more of a hat, I think it needs to be more than "twiddle and feather" - it needs a more of a definitive structure, IYSWIM.

Scbchl · 11/08/2021 23:12

Wear whatever you like and feel comfortable in..its quite obvious from this thread there is no set norm.

StCharlotte · 11/08/2021 23:18

I have a couple of weddings coming up. I will be wearing a fascinator like the one you (OP) linked to one wedding and this "hatinator" (different colour) to the other (family) wedding.

I genuinely don't understand the hate for fascinators - they're an easy way to finish off an outfit. I was invited to a US wedding and was bereft when I was told hats aren't a thing for weddings there. Had I gone I would have gone down the headband route with something like this, although probably without the veiling:

BuffySummersReportingforSanity · 11/08/2021 23:24

Ooh. I think I'd do pillbox hat and veil if I were going to a smart wedding right now. I do like that full-vintage "hatinator" linked upthread though, with the triple pearls and red lipstick.

Fascinators do look a bit... hen-party-at-Ascot to me at the moment. Sorry.

Mumski45 · 12/08/2021 06:33

I love wearing heardear and don't care if they are'out'. I prefer something a little more than a fascinator, more like a small hat on a headband as they are easy to wear.

I have DD's wedding coming up and am going all out with a wide rim hat which I love and am excited to wear.

LavenderAskew · 12/08/2021 06:56

There's always been a hard-core Fancinstor Hate Group on MN, it's been claimed for years (at least a decade!) that fascinators are out. Not an opinion that's reflected in actual weddings.

Last few weddings I was at there were a good few broad padded headbands, they which actuallly suited very few people. It was mostly fascinators - bigger ones like OP linked. A few hats but these were older women definitely no one under 70, they were really nice hats, but I do think they are old hat now (😄)

(I had nothing in my hair, just styled it differently each wedding.)

PrincessNutNuts · 12/08/2021 07:33

There were both fascinators and hats at the wedding I went to recently.

The youngsters were more likely to wear fascinator head bands or nothing, the older women, hats or nothing.

I went with sparkly hair clips because I felt overdone in either type of headgear,, but I had a floppy hat in the car outside the church in case everybody else seemed to be wearing one. (They weren't.)

GraceMelbury · 12/08/2021 07:34

I quite like this one too

What are you wearing?
Link to the dress? I am going to a wedding soon too and have bought a headband.

LavenderAskew · 12/08/2021 07:46

Should add, when I say oder women were wearing hats, I mean hat hats, rather than hats on a headband - which are more fascinators aren't they? Or maybe they are the hatinators - that would make sense.

That's a nice on OP.

mrssmiling · 12/08/2021 08:23

I like that OP.
Some lovely hair accessories here.

I think something worn on the head or in the hair is the right look for weddings, but agree with previous posters that anything goes really.

I love that hatinator! Sadly I don't have a wedding to go to or I'd buy it right now!

Mammyloveswine · 12/08/2021 09:56

I always wear a hat to a wedding in a church!

Registry office or less formal then a fascinator it is! (Or stm probs a fancy headband).

GraceMelbury · 12/08/2021 12:22

This is the dress I'm going to wear.

My daughter wanted to wear my hatinator last night so I took some photos of her in it - I adore it, but it cost me a fortune and I never go anywhere to wear it any more!

@GraceMelbury that’s a beautiful dress!

[quote GraceMelbury]Thanks everyone for the advice. I really like the hatinator below (thanks to pp who suggested googling it) - what do you think???

My hat (or hatinator!) arrived from this company earlier in the week. I'm very pleased with it. Not Philip Treacey but decent quality and looks good.

GraceMelbury · 12/08/2021 20:05

Thanks Trudi I love the dress- I bought it at Easter in the sale it wasa mega-bargain! I've been holding off on getting a hat incase the wedding is downsized but 🤞it will go ahead.

I've ordered the accessorize hat - do you think it will go? The flowers on the dress are a very dark navy.

FatAnkles · 12/08/2021 20:08

Hate hats/fascinators. I wore an extra sparkly hair decoration when I got married. Had my hair put up by a hairdresser and she jammed in the decoration, which was a sort of sparkling comb thing. I got a lot of compliments.

StCharlotte · 12/08/2021 20:19

Lovely dress OP - have you got the pale blue or dark blue? They're both gorgeous.

GraceMelbury · 12/08/2021 20:21

I have the light one - it's lilac IRL, which goes really well as I have lilac hair.

That Accessorize one is gorgeous.
