Oh dear God help me. My first date in 18 years!

I am going on a DATE. I am 50, newly single and I need help to get ready!!!

It’s next Sunday, we are going around a gallery/stately home type place. I have never met him in real life and my confidence has just ebbed away!

I’m 5’8” very too heavy size 18 and blonde. I have good hair, a nice face and then it starts to go meh the further down I go.

So far I think I’ve settled on a maxi dress with a small sleeve, bit of cleavage at the front, but not sure about footwear. Or anything else for that matter. I’ve got one good hoik-em-up bra.

Help. I really don’t want him to be horrified and leg it. I mean, I know he’s a nice person and that’s unlikely but, well, you know...

@Shuffleuplove I just wanted to wish you all the best! I had my first OLD date in 2003 and was very sceptical and took it slowly. We celebrated our 15 wedding anniversary earlier this year so go for it!

When I permed my eyelashes they went like dead millipedes would look if they were lying on their back with their cremated corkscrew legs waving in the air.

Useful for putting off dribblers and bird crumb peckers but I did look very clock work orange for quite some time

You started out full of doubt but you’ve totally turned it around and all the little treatments & pampering things you’ve done have boosted your confidence. Well done you. That’s exactly what you needed. I was going to say you need to treat this date as a first step of getting back out there. Even if it doesn’t lead to anything else, just remember what you’ve achieved by getting to this stage. You’ve found lots of little things that have given you confidence. These should be things for YOU, not necessarily the men that you meet. That inner confidence will help you to attract the right sort of man and if you have to try a few out along the way, then all the better for you! I like your take on the kiss & the merkin - you sound like an absolute hoot. The man you meet needs to appreciate that - that humour is too good to be wasted on someone boring! Put aside any worries about OLD, your age etc- think of all the possible adventures that lie ahead!

Developments. He wants to meet earlier cos it’s quiet. The voice in my head is saying “that’s so he can get it over with”. Ridiculous. But anyway I’ve agreed and am about to jump into action!

I left a masque on my hair last night and have blown it this morning and it’s very good.

Oh and I bought new white trainers as my other ones are slightly grubby and I couldn’t find any of that whitening stuff my mum used to do my school pumps with.

Have a word with that voice in your head. He's probably just as keen as you are!
Top tip - most white pumps are fine in a very short machine wash. 😊

Re meeting earlier - as I read that, I thought he wants to meet earlier so that you can spend longer together! It’s a long time to wait until this afternoon if he’s excited to meet up!

Your preparation sounds perfect. My advice:

Have low expectations - more often than not I'm disappointed
This is the meeting where you'll know straight away if there's any chemistry
The first meeting is actually the interview for the proper first date (and for that reason I'd save the snogging for the real first date).
Men are often shorter than they claim to be (but you've got that covered with the white trainers ).
