Dungarees for the over 40s - yay or nay?

Snowdrop30 · 23/07/2021 18:13

Maybe the heat is going to my head but I quite fancy a pair of these lucyandyak.com/products/organic-originals-navy-blue?variant=8179677364327 Size 14 with big boobs, mid 40s. Am I mad?

They are pretty loose. The sizing has changed since I last ordered some.
They were S, M, L then. Mine are more loose than the one the model is wearing.

WasThisSexist · 28/07/2021 13:51

It’s a definite nay from me, I don’t think anyone over the age of child looks good in dungarees.

However, I am also firmly of the belief that you shouldn’t give a damn what I think and if you like them, wear them! In that context the Lucy and Yak ones are pretty nice as dungarees go.

Laquila · 28/07/2021 15:07

Can I have some recs for comfy dungarees with slight stretch, please? The L&Y are a bit ubiquitous round here, but I'd like something comfortable that I can wear with sandals and with trainers, ideally not denim. The Run & Fly ones look a bit stuff/thick. Any recommendations gratefully received!

ILoveShula · 28/07/2021 15:37

There are plenty. I had some lovely light stretch twill ones but I sold them and I can't remember the brand. I think it began with O and was two words.

They were comfy and flattering but I had too many dungarees.

Monki might have some.

tunnocksweesnake · 28/07/2021 15:52

I bought a pair of the Umi's about 6 months ago. The size I ordered seemed too big, so I reordered in the next size down.

I've worn them once and now they won't even look at my ever expanding ass.

Upsetting.

But once I get my fat self sorted, I'll definitely be buying another pair.

AnnieSnap · 28/07/2021 20:16

I don’t think it’s an age thing. Some women love them and if you do, go for it. I love jumpsuits, but don’t feel dungarees are me at all.

The run and fly are quite comfy, I have the twirl ones and they are not too thick. I received a pair of Lucy and yak shirt dungarees yesterday and they are very wide around the bum and hips, I don’t think they are flattering unless your plus size, I will only be wearing them at home or whilst doing gardening. I have a few hippy tie died dungarees that I bought from a local shop that are really comfy and thin cotton, great for the summer but I got caught on a door handle wearing a pair and they ripped 😬.
Lowlifeinhighplaces · 30/07/2021 10:11

An update on my Lucy & Yak order.

Ordered the original dungarees and went I size down as I previously read they were quite baggy, so little concerned about the fit.

But honestly, I love them and the fit is good for me, only one small gripe is the bib size could be a little wider, other than that could not be happier with them very comfortable and the fine needlecord is great as is the colour.

So after the usual comments about painting/children's entertainer....and so on from my DH, he just said wear what you want to wear!, Good for me I am now converted thanks Snowdrop30 for starting the tread!

nordica · 30/07/2021 10:32

Great to here you're happy with them Lowlifeinhighplaces! Which colour did you go for?

I'm wearing one of their midi pinafore dresses today, which I like as an alternative to dungarees. Smile

nordica · 30/07/2021 10:32

*hear! I never confuse here/hear usually Blush

ILoveShula · 30/07/2021 10:42

That's great @Lowlifeinhighplaces. What colour did you get?

I was about to say I want some cord ones but I've already got some needlecord dungarees. Hmm.

Lowlifeinhighplaces · 30/07/2021 11:16

I bought the berry colour, really like the shade.....have my eye on the blue as well ILoveShula

Dont think I would suit the dungaree dress nordica but think others look great in them

ILoveShula · 30/07/2021 11:36

I don't like the mini pini because it has no side pockets

Oh bugger. Damn you Lowlife, I want berry ones now.

EllaPaella · 30/07/2021 12:46

I have two pairs of dungarees and love them. I'm 42. I'm not a massive fan of the Lucy and Yak ones as they're not really my style. I have run and fly black soft skinny denim ones (lovely fit) and a pair of Gap denim boyfriend ones which are my favourites.
I only really wear mine in summer with a vest top or skinny rib T shirt underneath and with either flip-flops or sandals.

ILoveShula · 30/07/2021 13:17

I have the gap denim ones and some lovely gap cord ones.

Wbeezer · 30/07/2021 17:37

I'm going out in my gap denim ones for a meal in the pub, i have put a vintage Toast blouse on underneath, my Swedish clogs and I've brushed my hair. That counts as glamour for me.

Fallulah · 30/07/2021 17:42

If you like ‘quirky’ prints, Popsy do dungarees. I haven’t got them because I know I would look like a Teletubby-come-CBBC-presenter but I think they do look good on some people. The fabric looks like jersey though, which does cling if they’re a bit tight. Lots of pics on their Facebook page.

You are all making me want denim dungarees though, which I haven’t had for thirty years!

PropertyFlipper · 30/07/2021 17:46

@Chicchicchicchiclana

No. It slightly makes me cringe.
Agree. They are all kinds of wrong. Dungarees shouldn’t be worn by anyone over the age of ten.
LadyJJ · 30/07/2021 19:48

I'm 50 and have the cord ones.
I love them

Nanny67 · 30/07/2021 19:52

I'm 54 and am wearing some black baggy ones right now. So comfy and I think they look great 😊

CointreauVersial · 30/07/2021 21:02

Am also 54, and recently dipped my toe in the dungarees pool, buying a Fatface denim pair pre-owned from eBay. I absolutely love them, but they still seem to be something I mostly wear around the house - can't quite shake off the "too old" feeling.

I do think they look a lot better worn with a pretty blouse than with a teeshirt or jersey top. Cropped or rolled to show some ankle, not too tight or too baggy. And I avoid primary/bright coloured tops, or DH starts cracking Play School jokes.

Wbeezer · 30/07/2021 22:53

I'm 53 and a half and have two pairs, make a nice change from jeans, i couldn't face buying the high waisted "Mum" jeans or bootlegs that are back in the shops.

mancarose · 30/07/2021 23:15

Wear whatever you want to wear as long as you feel good!!!!

Lavenderpillow · 31/07/2021 08:22

Do these work on people who have a big arse?! I ask because I have one…

ILoveShula · 31/07/2021 14:26

@Lavenderpillow, The L&Y ones do.
