Dungarees for the over 40s - yay or nay?

Maybe the heat is going to my head but I quite fancy a pair of these lucyandyak.com/products/organic-originals-navy-blue?variant=8179677364327 Size 14 with big boobs, mid 40s. Am I mad?

@AllisoninWunderland I definitely stopped being cool and trendy some time ago. I fell down the small kids/work rabbit hole for a good decade and am only just starting to put my head up again and wonder who I am now, and what makes me happy. It's a mid forties thing - but style wise I have realised, I have no clue any more.

Some great tips here: so size down for L and Y and try out their Alexa trousers too (which actually look like you can fit hips in them and everything). Thanks everyone!

They are definitely not my thing and they look like the most unflattering thing anyone could wear BUT if you like them and they make you happy then get them. They are obviously a, fashion staple in many wardrobes.

Snowdrop30 · 24/07/2021 06:28

Sounds like they are very much a Marmite item!

BusterGonad · 24/07/2021 07:26

Yes they are marmite, but better marmite than boring and bland. 😊

StopCryingYourHeartOut · 24/07/2021 08:54

But they are boring. Confused

Pigtailsandall · 24/07/2021 08:59

Personally, I also live in an area with lots of over 40s mums in Lucy and Yak so definitely that's the target market. I've yet to see anyone look good in them though (sorry). They don't seem to be cut right, just straight down the front like two pieces of fabric hooked together so they hung unflatteringly around the belly and hips. I bet they are comfy though.

I do have pair of denim dungarees which I love, they fit well and go with anything. Not too light breezy for summer but great for when the weather turns cooler

KatherineJaneway · 24/07/2021 09:00

Nay

Maireas · 24/07/2021 09:14

Yay. Ignore the ageist crap, go for it.
Oh, and when did "mum" become a synonym for lack of style?
You'll look great!

cherrytree63 · 24/07/2021 09:15

I'm 58 and last week went to a gig in some thin cotton dungarees from Tu. It was roasting hot and they were really comfy. I don't think my OH was impressed Grin, he spent all the journey there suggesting other things that I would have been comfy in. Like my very mumsy elasticated waist linen trousers.

ineedsun · 24/07/2021 09:20

I love dungarees - obviously it all depends how you wear them, as with everything. I’m 48.

AdelindSchade · 24/07/2021 09:33

There is a comedy on Netflix with Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin who wears them and looks amazing. She must be in her seventies.

hellcatspangle · 24/07/2021 09:35

I'd love some dungarees but I fear my dc would laugh at me...I had some when I was pregnant and lived in them.

Love them styled like above but totally not into the L&Y / party entertainer vibe.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 24/07/2021 09:48

Oh wow I disagree! Fitted denim dungarees and a big blouse is not great. Much prefer the L&Y ones. And when people talk about sizing down so they fit better, I wonder if they are wearing them too tight.

Jackgrealishscurtains · 24/07/2021 09:49

I bought some L and Y dungarees - I am very short, with short legs and the top part didn't even reach up to my tits without giving me a major fanny wedgie! Bizarre sizing!

I quite like dungarees in general - they are a little bit 'oh look how effortlessly quirky and unique I am by wearing the exact same thing as a load of other women my age' but if you like them then go for it!

Lovemusic33 · 24/07/2021 09:50

I find run and fly fit better than Lucy and yak, I agree with what others say about everyone wearing Lucy and yak and they don’t look very flattering (they look to baggy around the hips and tummy) but apparently they have recently changed the fit. I have about ten pairs of dungarees but no Lucy and yak though I have Lucy and yak trousers which are so comfy. As I said up thread “I find GAP and run and fly the best fit”, I wear a xs in run and fly and I’m a size 12.

My dc laugh at me when I wear them but not as much as when I wear dungaree dresses.

livingwithbees · 24/07/2021 09:52

I adore L&Y dungarees, I reckon everyone looks good in them! Styled them in so many different ways, today is looking like a Cornish fisherwoman vibe 😂 I currently have the ones you linked in your first post 😊

livingwithbees · 24/07/2021 09:52

Really fancying the trousers for after baby has arrived 😊

AllisoninWunderland · 24/07/2021 09:58

@Snowdrop30
I understand that. I’m a similar age to you with kids. It’s easily done.
What I suppose I mean is that it doesn’t HAVE to mean losing that ‘edge’. It upsets me that women our age are often relegated to ‘mumsy’ and uncool. Ugh.

Just a thought, maybe look at some other dungarees or jumpsuits too. The Fat Face denim ones are very flattering and a bit less ‘kids entertainer’! (I say that kindly , as a wearer of L&Y dungarees). Also the GAP ones. Jumpsuits can be more wearable too. I have some from Free People, Urban Outfitters & Billabong. I get asked about them all the time.

lightnesspixie · 24/07/2021 10:04

I'm thinking Meryl Streep - not a great look 🙈

Thewolvesarerunningagain · 24/07/2021 10:05

I bought the LucyandYak in a beautiful rose pink cord and had to return them.I was gutted as I wanted so much to like them but as a larger apple shape the looked a bit Rod, Jane and Freddy on me. I won’t lie, I was soooo tempted to try to style it out anyway, they were so comfortable when I tried them on.

AllisoninWunderland · 24/07/2021 10:12

I’m not sure what is remotely wrong with this look. She looks great.

@Birkie248

I like them.... but I do have rather questionable taste (I have a dungaree dress).
Blimey I have several dungaree dresses and dungarees I'm 55!

Am apple shape too, I buy them 2 sizes too big! They're even better loose
