Is there anything good in Next

I am heading to a Next tomorrow and will be the only place to have a peek before I head off on holiday. I don't atually need anything and am absolutly not normally a next person. I like a funky indie chick look and always thought Next was a bit old fashioned. Is there anything I need to look at while I am in there? Just had a quick look online and nothing stood out.

No.

I regularly shop in Next. I generally end up buying petite jeans and complaining about everything else.

pastabest · 20/07/2021 21:36

Not in the shop but they are good online

RubyGoat · 20/07/2021 21:39

No. They're crap.

TheFairyCaravan · 20/07/2021 21:40

These dresses are lovely.

Where is a good alternative?

millymoo1202 · 20/07/2021 22:32

I’ve just received this today in the Berry print and it’s lovely on but a bit big

RubyGoat · 20/07/2021 22:57

To be fair, some of their kids stuff is ok. Adult stuff is awful though. Cheaply cut, horrible plasticky fabrics which are mostly far too thin, a lot of the knitwear isn't proper knitwear, it's jumper shaped tops cut out of sheets of knitted fabric & not even finished properly on the inside so it unravels within a couple of months. Irregularities in sizing.

I was given a £100 Next gift voucher for my birthday when DD was a baby. I honestly couldn't spend it on stuff for me. Bought baby clothes with it instead.

@coodawoodashooda - I don't know. I don't buy fast fashion (i.e. cheap disposable clothing) any more. It's pretty much all crap TBH. But Next is definitely one of the worst, because it's one of the more expensive high street options.

JaceLancs · 20/07/2021 23:02

I find next great for swimwear - but mainly online to get the sizes I need
I have a few linen dresses as well but that’s about it from them

greenlynx · 20/07/2021 23:20

I tried to buy from Next several times but it didn’t work. Their summer trousers and tops look good but they are for tall women with wide shoulders, thin long arms, slim waist and noticeable bottom who love synthetic and low cut & V neck tops. None of these applies to me (especially not wide shoulders and slim waist )
However Next does good school socks and teen knickers.

Where do you shop? If you don't mind me asking?
newnortherner111 · 21/07/2021 07:05

@coodawoodashooda I agree with the sentiment. High street retailing in the UK is very poor in my opinion. I'd be tempted were it not for the pandemic to reply with 'somewhere in Paris'.

Next in my opinion lost their way at least ten years ago, and in general fast fashion has lowered quality all round it seems.

OverByYer · 21/07/2021 07:10

Next has really gone downhill.
I remember in the 80s listing after their penny loafers and saving up my meagre wages to buy a pair. I used to dream about being able to buy whole outfits from there.
Now I have a directory account and on the rare occasion I order from there it generally goes back.
Horrible material, odd sizeing.
I still like some of the homeware but definitely not what it used to be

DuchessMinnie · 21/07/2021 07:16

Oh I quite like Next for basic cotton t shirts, pyjamas and casual clothes. I have bought their cropped linen cargo trousers in 3 colours this summer. I get compliments on lots of dresses from Next. I am very picky about their stuff though and bypass all the polyester.

I would never go to a store though- has to be online so I can browse properly.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 21/07/2021 07:17

I like some of their kids' stuff, but would never buy clothes for me from there.

I did once get a gorgeous dress from there that I still miss - but that was 20 years ago!

Maireas · 21/07/2021 07:37

I agree with pp, particularly @LegoCaltrops.
I haven't shopped in Next for years, but it occupies a prime site in my town centre, so I went in for a browse on Monday. It was so bad it was depressing. As pp have said - terrible fabrics, colours, no style. Nothing stylish or interesting.

Cardboardeaux · 21/07/2021 07:41

They do decent basic tops in Tall sizes, useful if you have big boobs and need a longer top.
Some of their jeans come in in between sizes too (11, 13 etc) which is handy.
I'm still mourning the loss of their discontinued Hypercurve jeans.
Agree with pp that most of the rest is pretty poor.

BuffySummersReportingforSanity · 21/07/2021 07:41

No. Cheap looking, poorly cut, watered down trends with everything that's interesting taken out of them.

MoltonSilver · 21/07/2021 07:45

In the shop? No, there's nothing.

MoltonSilver · 21/07/2021 07:46

The shops really only serve as a place to drop off internet returns.

SprayedWithDettol · 21/07/2021 07:47

I don’t buy v much in Next at all - the odd pair of jeans perhaps or a denim jacket - but wandered in there the other day and bought this dress. It’s lovely so I bought the black one too.

Is there anything good in Next
Jedstre · 21/07/2021 09:12

I just get the odd thing for my daughter now. I also remember in the 80s it having really good quality stuff. I had a couple of beautiful wool jumpers from there.

RubyGoat · 21/07/2021 09:53

@coodawoodashooda I don't really buy much these days because I've got sufficient clothes & don't need more, also I'm a little bit overweight & I refuse to buy clothes that will (hopefully) not fit me for too much longer. I occasionally look in TKMaxx, they sometimes have the odd bargain, but it's pretty rare TBH. I knit all my own jumpers (although it's shawls at the moment, because it would be pretty galling to make one & then have to give it away when I get thin!) I significantly changed my clothes shopping habits after watching the below video. I also only wear natural fabrics because plastic fabrics are
a) Sweaty;
b) Static-y (yes I know it's not a wordGrin)
c) Their production methods are questionable unless they are made from recycled plastic which is usually not guaranteed;
d) They release microplastics into the oceans & it's not possible to filter these out;
e) They are almost impossible to mend when they start to show signs of wear, unlike natural fibres;
f) Plastic type fabrics tend to wear out much more quickly compared to clothes made from natural fibres.

I've made all the mistakes in this video. Pretty galling to realise how much crap clothing I've bought over the years. Crap jumpers were a big parts of the reason I learned to knit. Am learning to sew but I've currently got nowhere for my machine.
