MIL and FIL’s excuse for missing DD’s christening was that FIL was playing a real tennis match with Prince Edward.

StartupRepair · 02/07/2021 00:05

I met Prince Charles a couple of years ago. He was surprisingly lovely. Disappointed in the statue. Diana looks almost frumpy which she never ever was.

Eaumyword · 02/07/2021 06:33

Loving these recollections Smile
Ours as a family was when my lovely dad was honoured by HMQ at Buckingham Palace many years ago. We all got to go to watch and it was so exciting. She really is super tiny.
I thought the statue was horrid at first glance. I then watched the video clip of the unveiling and it does look much better from different angles. I just think it looks a little masculine and grey.
I always thought Diana was attractive rather than traditionally pretty, but had charisma and star quality in heaps. Her charm and appeal was in her facial expressions and her physical grace and that would be hard to capture. Her smile really lit her up and made her beautiful.

@KillingMeDeftly

Of course it's Diana's birthday today isn't? To think she'd only be turning 60. Here's some gorgeous photos of her by Testino - much nicer than the statue!
Oh my goodness! William is really Diana's double, isn't he? I've always seen the resemblance but it really hits you in those first 2 photos. I went to Kensington Palace to see Diana's wedding dress last month. It is absolutely stunning! How on earth she managed to walk down the aisle with a 25 ft train I'll never know. It was lovely to see but very poignant when you know what happened. One other thing I did love was that one part of the palace has wallpaper which is all drawings of Diana! It's very clever and really plays up her lovely eyes. I took a picture but can't get it to uploadHmm
LadyEloise · 02/07/2021 08:49

@KillingMeDeftly thank you for posting the lovely Testino link. Those photos are beautiful.

It must be tough on her sisters. They had their ups and downs - it must have been very difficult particularly for Lady Jane as her husband was the Queen's Private Secretary from 1990 to 1999, with all that ensued.
They never complain, never explain as was the policy of the Queen.

I am disappointed in the statue as it hasn't captured her magical quality.

KillingMeDeftly · 02/07/2021 09:01

Someone on another thread posted a photo of this sculpture, which I think captures the essence of Diana far more.

I once went to a sculpture park on the outskirts of Budapest where all the city's communist-era statues were on display. Fascinating place but the new Diana sculpture looks like it belongs there!

Kate at Wimbledon today. She sometimes manages to just frump up a perfectly ok outfit. Like a different blazer or a cross body bag or a French tuck could all have improved this.

I like Kate's skirt but I really detest white shoes, and those are an especially awful example. And I agree about the bag and blazer too. The blazer needed to be shorter imo, and a splash of red somewhere would have lifted the whole look.

hopeishere · 02/07/2021 11:56

I've seen her with a red crossbody mulberry bag that would have worked. Skirt is also imho a bad length.

hopeishere · 02/07/2021 11:58

Full length with shoes.

BeaLola · 02/07/2021 12:03

I soooo do not like those shoes

KillingMeDeftly · 02/07/2021 12:24

Kate channelling her inner Essex girl with those shoesGrin I'm sure they're £££ but you could probably get similar for under a tenner at Primark!

The skirt is very similar to a dress she has but on balance I prefer the dress. There's nothing inherently wrong with today's outfit, it's just a bit boring compared to some of her previous Wimbledon looks.

AdaColeman · 02/07/2021 12:31

Kate’s dressed for a shopping trip to the Co-op today, and the white shoes are ghastly.

hopeishere · 02/07/2021 13:36

£1000 for that skirt Shock. Crikey.

We had that pleasure too - it was in the days before they began recording the investitures. Really sad about that. It was a massive physical feat for my Dad to step forward to HM and then step backwards to bow, but he did it! Would give anything to have the physical memory of that ceremony.

I was working when Diana was awarded the freedom of Northampton - she was an absolute presence in the hall. When they left I found a small itinerary that had been left behind in their 'retiring room'. Diana was going on to Althorp, and Charles was helicoptering off to a 'private occasion'. I still have it somewhere. Sad. And for this thread, Diana was wearing a very beautiful pink suit, from memory!

latedecember1963 · 02/07/2021 13:47

I don't mind the skirt and blazer but the neckline of the white top is too high.
I wonder if white shoes are coming back again? I need to get shoes for my son's wedding in August and a couple of my workmates asked me if I was going to go with white. They are young enough to not remember white shoes in the 1980s and 90s.

LadyEloise · 02/07/2021 13:53

Re white shoes coming back, I saw someone who I thought should know better, in white shoes lately. Smile
Perhaps they ARE back ?

MotherofPearl · 02/07/2021 14:05

I really loathe white shoes. I hope they're not coming back in! Anyway, I certainly won't be taking part in that particular fashion revival.

SenecaFallsRedux · 02/07/2021 14:52

Another white shoe hater here. And I live in the Southern US where they never seem to completely go out of style.

Maireas · 02/07/2021 16:30

Not a good outfit for Kate. She's got a wardrobe full of lovely dresses, bags and shoes, there's no need. I really dislike the whole look, especially the bag and of course the shoes. White stiletto courts? I haven't seen those for years. Please don't say they're having a fashion moment.....Confused

Must be a Diana's birthday celebratory outfit..... What a waste of great body and endless access to clothes....

Maireas · 02/07/2021 16:36

I've said this before, but I love this Wimbledon outfit on Kate. The colour, shape, sleeves, handbag, hair...just lovely

I love that outfit too @Maireas and would happily wear it myself! The shorter chocolate brown hair looks fabulous too, she has it a lot lighter these days but perhaps that's to do with coverage of greys.

Maireas · 02/07/2021 16:55

Leti is in a form fitting dress today, but a bit disappointing (imo). I love a sparkle, but not on a grey knitted dress.
