What white trainers are currently "in"?

ARoseGarden · 07/06/2021 11:23

I want to buy a pair of white trainers to wear with jeans and dresses for the summer as I'm bored of my Converse and Vans.

What white trainers are currently "in"? (Not that it matters, but I would like to know)

Thank you!

Exactly!

You'll have to pry my Stan Smith trainers off my cold, dead feet.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 08/06/2021 10:00

Thank Constance.
I feel a bit self conscious in them so nice to know I'm not going to look like I'm wearing my teenager's shoes, even though I am! Normally I just wear grey addidas gazelles.

Mumof3girlsandaboy · 08/06/2021 10:00

@mayjuneapril

I don’t know much about what’s ‘in’ but I’ve noticed every other teenager is in Air Force Nike and 30-something mums are in vejas round here.
Same here! Every time I go out all I see is teenagers wearing Air Force Nike, Jordan and converse high tops including my own teenagers.
Roanpony · 08/06/2021 10:04

Younger people round here in the Air Force or chunky things

Older women (35+) are in Veja. Also seen a few much older women (eg 60/70s) in Veja. Definitely no younger people wear them round here.

WingingItSince1973 · 08/06/2021 10:08

@ShirleyPhallus absolutely spot on. Why do I want to look like everyone else. At 48 sadly my choice of shoe is down to comfort but I do like style too. My own style. Not because the 20 somethings are saying they wouldn't be seen dead in them. I wouldn't pay those prices either. I consider my style as eclectic. I don't want to look like the masses but I'm watching this thread with interest to see what trainers are comfy and affordable 🙃

Bagelsandbrie · 08/06/2021 10:09

Dd aged 18 had never heard of Veja until I asked her about them after reading a thread on here. Of course that doesn’t matter, what 18 year olds are wearing isn’t what I’d wear anyway! My dd is very into Koi footwear as a brand - not necessarily trainers but essentially huge platform shoes with gothic type bits all over them etc. I think every age group has its own style, what’s “in” for one age group isn’t necessarily in for another. And that’s ok!

StrawberryLipstickStateOfMind · 08/06/2021 10:11

I'm 33 and love my white supergas and my white Adidas gazelles (which were kids ones I think)!

I get told I look young for my age but tbh I've always just worn whatever the hell I like and don't really give a shit about what is actually in fashion. Some trends are nice but some are fucking awful so I'd much rather be out of fashion and wearing something that I like and that goes together as an outfit.

I hate lots of the chunky trainers as think they look really ugly and like just really plain and simple ones to wear with summer dresses.

Divebar2021 · 08/06/2021 10:20

Takes a lot of confidence to do that but that is essentially what personal style is all about.

HelenHywater · 08/06/2021 10:39

Veja's aren't cool! They're mum trainers. I bought some back in 2017 and do find them very comfortable. But they're too ubiquitous now.

As for Nike Air Max, I wear my dd's cast offs and look fab! I find them comfortable but can't wear Stan Smiths (which I bought when Phoebe Philo wore them in a vain attempt to recreate her look) as my instep is too high I think.

I also wear Van's checkerboard slip-ons and think they look good - but I'm 51 and no longer give any fucks about what the young people or indeed anyone else think.

winched · 08/06/2021 10:44

Why do I want to look like everyone else.

While I'm all for arguing over the benefits of following fashion or going it alone, the OPs specific question was:

What white trainers are currently "in"? (Not that it matters, but I would like to know)

So in that sense I can understand why some posters (including me!) answered the way they did? And loads of posters also gave ages too because op didn't make it clear and there is obviously a difference between what's "in" for each group?

If OP had asks for recs on the comfiest / most affordable / best looking / longest wearing / all time favourite trainer... I don't think anyone would have said "that's not 'in' for my age group"

So why the decent into "why would I want to look like everyone else?" territory when the OP was literally asking what white trainers to buy if she wanted to look like everyone else Confused

20 somethings still look like they're all marching around in uniform to me. I suppose it's not that long since they left school and it takes them a while to lose that tribal badge requirement in their choices.

Honestly just sounds snidey to me.

Everyone is perfectly entitled to hate on the "in" trends btw. My "out" skinny jeans will never be given up, just like certain posters "out" trainers. But some people like to follow fashions / trends for certain items and I think that should be a totally valid thing to want on a board about style & beauty. Confused

Yes! What's in for 20 somethings and what's in for 40 somethings doesn't have to be the same thing.

Personally I have a pair of Puma Carinas and a pair of Kurt Geiger Laneys with a leopard bit at the heel and I love them both but acknowledge they are probably not the height of fashion. I'm 40 and as much as I don't think I'm frumpy I would just look silly in chunky Balenciagas.

IjustbelieveinMe · 08/06/2021 10:56

I got these veja shoes last year. I think they were a one-off design. I love them

Over 35s on mumsnet: “why do young people all dress the same?? I don’t want to look the same as everyone else!!”

Also over 35s on mumsnet: all recommend vejas and Stan Smiths. (And skinny jeans)

Whatever you do, keep everything, because it’ll all come back around again.

groovychiick · 08/06/2021 11:14

I like my white Vejas, go with all day wear dresses and jeans etc. I have very narrow feet and find them comfy.

🙌🏻

Love checkerboard Vans. I find it funny people saying Vans/Converse are “out” maybe for those who latched on to them when they became ‘fashun’ but they’ll always be ‘in’ and worn by certain subcultures* (the same girls who used to take the mick out my Vans, all started wearing those black retro ones when they became acceptable)

*not sure if that’s the right word. I’ve always been a bit indie/rock/surfy…

Serpenta · 08/06/2021 11:27

I read so many reports that Vejas are uncomfortable so that's completely put me off them.

I've never really been a trainers person (only dabbled recreationally every few years) but I still find it interesting to see what brands and styles are coveted by different age groups. I will take the piss out of the Balenciaga offerings but if they're someone's lusted after fashion item there's nothing wrong with that.

chestnutshell · 08/06/2021 11:32

@SallyCinnabon isn’t that kind of the thing with a subculture though, that it’s not mainstream. So you can’t really claim your clothes are ‘in’ in a fashion sense. When those Vans Old Skools were in a few years ago it’s just that they became mainstream fashion for a bit. Now they aren’t. Obviously lots of people will continue to wear them and nobody will bat an eyelid but they won’t be on trend so to speak.

honeybuns007 · 08/06/2021 19:17

@callmemaybee

I’m 23 and wholeheartedly disagree with these suggestions! However it might be different with your generation/your peers of course.

You wouldn’t find people my age in stan smiths/fila disruptors as both are hugely outdated. Vans aren’t “in”. Converse had a resurgence in recent years, but I think popularity is beginning to wane again. The more “premium” styles like the platform, leather or rarer colours are the way to go.

Popular trainers now are chunky like the Balenciaga Track (which are expensive!) or Adidas ozweego.

For a more slim style Air Force are popular, as are the “knit” trainers like Yeezy or Balenciaga Speed.

Jordans are popular. Nike release new colourways regularly which each sell out within seconds.

Sorry to have to break it to you but 90s style Balenciagas and Adidas ozweego have had their moment as have Yeezys. It's all about basketball inspired and 00s techs looking trainers now. Also retro NB and Puma -the thin ones are back. Again.
Oly4 · 08/06/2021 19:55

Veja are uncomfy
My leather and canvas superga go in the wash

OverByYer · 08/06/2021 20:27

I tried Veja on they have no arch support or padding. Wouldn’t want to walk far in them

Plot twist!

You sit still for 5 mins and you've missed a trainer trend.

bubblicious3 · 08/06/2021 20:47

I think AFf1s are too chunky on my big feet. I have these Nike court legacy which I love as they have the same low profile, but are less common

Growuppeople · 08/06/2021 22:07

I’m 23 Smile Grin I say Adidas superstars

thesunwillout · 08/06/2021 22:33

I'm 52 and agree, been wearing them since you were minus 7.

Please don't be wearing iredescent stripes tho. 😉

And do wear them in 30 yrs time.

They are the best.

Rassy · 08/06/2021 22:50

I have just bought my first pair of white trainers - Rally ones from Fitflop. They are especially great if you have foot problems such as plantar fasciitis Sad
