@Mandalay246

A comfortable dress with Comfortable shoes is never going away.

Thank goodness.

White shoes are unflattering for large feet?

I've heard it all now. What is this world we live in where we're supposed to make even our feet look smaller??

I was actually talking about myself with my comment - I am very conscious of my larger feet when they are encased in white leather - I don't notice other people's though, and wasn't saying anyone with large feet shouldn't wear white trainers. I had a pair of white Superga and a pair of beige ones and the beige ones looked so much better on me. Are we not allowed opinions on MN any more???

I realise you were talking about yourself and not anyone else. It's my frustration with the entire sentiment really; that women should always endeavour to look less than they are.

Nobody thinks men should make themselves look smaller; they're fully allowed and expected to take up all the space they require.

I always wear 'floaty' unstructured dresses in the Summer - those linen M&S dresses upthread are typical of the sort I usually wear. Today I am wearing a HUGE oversized Kin dress that comes almost down to my ankles.

I prefer the look of plimsolls (Converse, Vans, mens Skechers, etc) to trainers, and I usually wear a thin, unlined, preferably unlapelled linen jacket as it is far cooler for the Summer than denim. Today's is denim-coloured as it happens, zip fronted and hooded.

I have been wearing this style forever. I look fucking fab.

@MarieIVanArkleStinks

I was wearing this kind of thing in the 90s!
I was wearing it in the 70s! Wink

To be fair the 90s were a generation ago. I was wearing it as well.

Harmonypuss · 01/06/2021 23:05

For the very first time in my life ice worn a floaty summer dress with white trainers today, the trainers were because I was walking the dog in the park but this isn't a 'style'I've ever given any thought to because for me, trainers belong with shorts or jeans.

I was very comfortable dressed this way today so I might try it again one day but I don't plan to make a habit of it, white trainers are a bugger to keep clean, especially after walking the dog 🤪

Pals812 · 02/06/2021 01:41

@WhoisRebecca, that look is lovely on you. Love the dress.

@Harmonypuss, it is liberating isn't it. The shoes/ trainers are the issue for me too. I have a 30 minute walk through the common to work and even my black supergas get dusty so I save the white ones for not so walky days.

Harmonypuss · 02/06/2021 02:13

@Pals812

Extremely liberating 🥰 but I think I need to dig out my old trainers for the park and keep my white ones for 'best.

Happyd · 02/06/2021 02:40

I was doing the maxi shirt and trainers look pushing my babies in their pram their both now in they very late 20s ☺️

Happyd · 02/06/2021 02:41

And am still doing the maxi and trainers look lol

Baycitystroller · 02/06/2021 04:28

I like the look. However I’m tall and those dresses are just not quite long enough for me.

groovergirl · 02/06/2021 05:38

Was the dress and shoes/ boots thing supposed to be a sort of juxtaposition idea?

@sadperson16 I'm old enough to recall the origin of this look in Sydney in the early '80s. The charity shops then were full of 1950s clothes and the rad fems and lesbians were raiding them for floral frocks, which they wore with Doc Martens or Blundstones, post-punk asymmetric haircuts, tattoos and masses of earrings as a visual up-yours to traditional femininity. It was a wicked look, and it caught on to become mainstream by the late '80s -- by which time most of the vintage frocks had been snapped up and designers began making modern versions.

I still have some Laura Ashley and Ojay dresses from that era. I'm thinking of donating them to the Australian National Trust, which has started collecting fashion.

homemadefries · 02/06/2021 06:20

By the way, the look I'm referring to is the very specific look of:

Zara spotty or floral or patterned floaty dress
Light wash denim jacket
White veja or Stan smith trainers

Or very small variations on that theme

I don't possess a dress or even a skirt. I'm 6 feet tall and always feel like Grayson Perry in one.

HomeSliceKnowsBest · 02/06/2021 06:35

@MuchTooTired Where are these skirts from please?

Cowbells · 02/06/2021 07:41

This is how we dressed in the early 80s too - tea dresses with a biker jacket or denim jacket and lace up deck shoes, trainers or DMs. It wasn't completely mainstream but lots of arts' students wore that look. Seems like it's a perennial.

It's not quite the same look, or attitude though
Sanguinesuzy · 02/06/2021 07:57

Agree mid 80s look too. Long or short flippy tea dress with denim/leather jacket and docs. Also floral shorts with black tights and docs Wink

Pals812 · 02/06/2021 07:58

@homemadefries, I have the zara dresses but somehow the look is never polished enough for me. I'm one of those who has toes to show for living in heels from am early age and found it hard to walk in flats. I've worn the said style but as liberating as it is, I feel I need to put more effort into my dressing. Its a slippery slope.
I actually wear mine with a dark navy cropped denim jacket which goes with pretty much everything.

spacedandtimed · 02/06/2021 08:02

Again, a completely different look!
Sanguinesuzy · 02/06/2021 08:48

@spacedandtimed variation on a theme Grin DM brogues were for many teenage/20 something girls in the 80s the equivalent of the white trainer ?

OrangePowder · 02/06/2021 08:56

It was worn on the 80s but not by middle aged mums Grin

helpIhateclothesshopping · 02/06/2021 08:57

It's got to be better than a crop top with a large muffin top below it and the weird lilac patterned flares I saw a teenager in a couple of weeks ago. I don't suppose everyone has actually made it out shopping for new clothes I guess some people just haven't got the money.

MaMelon · 02/06/2021 09:02

Ahhh...fond memories Smile I was far slimmer then and my boobs and arse were in the right places then though - I know it would look slightly different on 52 year old me.

Sanguinesuzy · 02/06/2021 09:14

@MaMelon agree ! Same here !

This is the thing. I think the look will recreate my youth. Then I look in shop windows in passing and there is this rotund matron in flat sensible shoes and a frumpy dress. Just not the look! Grin
