Discontinued products. Oh, the heartache!

I wasted a very pleasant hour or so yesterday afternoon drowning in nostalgia on the 90s teem magazine thread that is in Classics - www.mumsnet.com/Talk/mumsnet_classics/4178119-Early-Noughties-teen-mag-ridiculousness?pg=14.

That sent me down an Instagram wormhole on the @90steenmagazinearchiveuk page (well worth a look!)

I have recently had my world rocked by the realisation that my favourite By Terry lipstain has been discontinued, and that Crabtree & Evelyn no longer do the Jojoba Oil soaps that I loved.

However, this trawl through 90s fashion and beauty has made me ache for some of the products I lived in then.

I know it's been done before but I would give my (lengthening) eye-teeth for:

Impulse O2; Miss Selfridge nail varnish (scented or glow in the dark); Charlse Worthington thickening spray (it smelt amazing though did nothing for the thickness of my hair); BATH PEARLS; 40 million soaps shaped like various animals etc.

The thing I miss the most though is the huge range of body products that Boots Natural Collection used to do. My friends and I whiled away many hours milling around sniffing various body sprays, shower jels, bubble baths and God knows what else.

Seeing photos of the Boots catalogue Natural Collection pages from around 1996 was such a visceral hit of nostalgia it was akin to a punch in the stomach.

Am I alone?

Sunslik leave in conditioner. Ace

Pantene Original scented curly shampoo & conditioner from Safeway's (I mourn Safeways too Sad)

Deathraystare · 21/05/2021 19:31

@Darklane

Also you mentioned Goya perfume and the two Estee Lauder lipsticks I loved!

Blossomtoes · 21/05/2021 20:18

Anyone else old enough to remember Biba make up? I loved the yellow foundation, you looked as if you were in candlelight. The lipsticks were great too.

My mum’s favourite scent was Hartnell In Love, it smelt of sweet peas. If only I could find a bottle of that. She loved Vinolia soap too, it’s the smell of my childhood.

And Revlon Rosewood lipstick, nothing has ever suited me better. I still mourn it.

Geamhradh · 21/05/2021 20:45

Hartnell in Love came in a pink heart shaped bottle. My gran had some alongside her Chantilly and Je Reviens.

I think the body lotion or talcum powder did. The scent came in a little square phial with an eau de nil and gold label and a gold top.
Habbyhadno · 21/05/2021 20:56

Another vote for the Gap fragrances. Although their Dream fragrance smells identical to Marc Jacobs Rain. I was over the moon to find that scent.

Also, Mac Shadestick in Sharkskin and the l'Oreal Pro Hot and Straight Heat spray, they stopped that a few years ago and I can't find anything that comes close.

Habbyhadno · 21/05/2021 21:00

@haliborange0verdose

Mine are mostly scent related.
 • As several of you have already mentioned, Impulse O2! Oh it was lovely. There is a Dove deodorant with a picture of a pear on the front (I think it's called Go Fresh) that is quite similar, but not quite the same. Also Impulse did another one I loved called Zen.
 • Body Shop Oceania
 • Polo Sport Woman
 • Coty Monsoon in the blue bottle with the conical lid
 • Boots "Spa" range I think is what a PP was referring to. It was gorgeous and smelled really fresh and ozone-y
 • M&S did a Issey Miyake ripoff called Isis that was lovely
 • Lancome "O Oui" which you could buy separate shower gels in each of the three main notes of the perfume
Isis is still going, they changed the name. I think it's called Aqua now.

@bananaramadramas

Les belles de Ricci perfume in the green bottle with hot pink lid..I loved it!
OMG did it have a tomato leaf note in there? I LOVED that perfume.
WaitinginVain · 21/05/2021 21:42

Another vote for Amami setting lotion
Henara treatment mask
Estee Lauder Dazzling Silver perfume.

Seiheiki · 22/05/2021 06:58

The Body Shop Fuji Hair Scrub, Shampoo and Conditioner. Literally the only things that work on my dry flaky scalp.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 22/05/2021 20:59

Years ago there was a brand called Topaz that did gorgeous shampoo and conditioner , gorgeous spicy scent

BodyShop Green shampoo and Hair salad , smelled like fresh cut gras

I used to love the BodyShop mascaras , they did brown and navy which are harder to find and vital for me , they were sealed so i knew no-one had opened them , pumped air into it and closed it .

@DailyMaui

Mary Quant makeup was fabulous. I once found a chemist that sold loads of it at bargain prices and bought tons. Probably all out of date but they lasted well!

You can still buy Mary Quant cosmetics, although the company ownership has changed.

Thanks for the memory!

Blueberry40 · 23/05/2021 09:29

Monsoon perfume- the one in the turquoise bottle with the bronze lid. It was my signature scent, was so upset when they discontinued it and have never found another perfume that even comes close for me in over 20 years.

Spied · 23/05/2021 10:31

I really miss Virgin Vie.
Loved 'Calm' scent and a bronzing, shimmering creamy thing that came in a large compact and left killer highlights on your decolleteSmile

baldafrique · 23/05/2021 10:32

Les Belles de Ricci was the best perfume ever and I cant understand why they discontinued it. It was DELICIOUS.

Barbara Daly One Step Foundation Powder from Tesco's

I forgot about that range! I used to use the foundation, it was brilliant and cheap!

Laiste · 23/05/2021 15:24

My other one would be Sex Appeal (for women) by Jovin. (bright pink bottle gold writing)

I won a bottle in a raffle when i was about 13 (like you do)(i wanted the teddy bear but someone else got that) and bunged it in the back of a drawer (never even took off the cellophane).

About 4 years later i checked it out and .... hmmmmmmm ... i can smell it now! Teenage me kicking round central London in the 80s wearing that. I got complimented on that smell by everyone all.the.time.

I don’t recall Biba make up but I remember getting their mail order clothes catalogue, not that I bought any. Pity, would be worth a bit nowadays.
**@Darklane

Oh my! We are twins!

I remember the Max Factor perfumes, the Quant make up (I used to save up for it!), the Coty and Yardley stuff (the actual best set of eye shadows - soul setters - beautiful mauves blues greens etc). I was reminded of Revlon Flex conditioner as one of my conditioners smells the same!
I used to love the L'Oreal shampoo and conditioner (white bottles with pink sections), I used to get so many compliments on the smell of my hair.

Also miss Nude perfume by Stella McCartney which was discontinued a few years ago.
