Discontinued products. Oh, the heartache!

I wasted a very pleasant hour or so yesterday afternoon drowning in nostalgia on the 90s teem magazine thread that is in Classics - www.mumsnet.com/Talk/mumsnet_classics/4178119-Early-Noughties-teen-mag-ridiculousness?pg=14.

That sent me down an Instagram wormhole on the @90steenmagazinearchiveuk page (well worth a look!)

I have recently had my world rocked by the realisation that my favourite By Terry lipstain has been discontinued, and that Crabtree & Evelyn no longer do the Jojoba Oil soaps that I loved.

However, this trawl through 90s fashion and beauty has made me ache for some of the products I lived in then.

I know it's been done before but I would give my (lengthening) eye-teeth for:

Impulse O2; Miss Selfridge nail varnish (scented or glow in the dark); Charlse Worthington thickening spray (it smelt amazing though did nothing for the thickness of my hair); BATH PEARLS; 40 million soaps shaped like various animals etc.

The thing I miss the most though is the huge range of body products that Boots Natural Collection used to do. My friends and I whiled away many hours milling around sniffing various body sprays, shower jels, bubble baths and God knows what else.

Seeing photos of the Boots catalogue Natural Collection pages from around 1996 was such a visceral hit of nostalgia it was akin to a punch in the stomach.

Am I alone?

Aveda Chaka perfumes. They discontinued them then relaunched with different bottles and different smells. Their original Motivation perfume was amazing and nothing like the new one.

Also Agent Provocateur discontinued L'Agent - another beautiful perfume.

Grrrrr

No, not just you. There used to be so many great things now sadly gone.
Ecusson perfume by Jean D’Albret, the Max Factor perfumes Electrique, Primitif & Hypnotique. All the Goya ones.
Mary Quant make up ( my teenage years were the sixties)
All the Boots Mediterranean skin care range
Clinique cake eyeliner, Estee Lauder lipstick in Pink Champagne & Frosted Apricot in the old gold metal cases.
Revlon chunky stick cream blushers, Coty & Yardley make up, Almay make up range......I could go on & on.

Mellonsprite · 19/05/2021 18:53

If they could just make the old Revlon flex shampoo & conditioner again, I would die happy.
I really yearn for the gorgeous smell, but can’t even start to describe it properly, kind of spicy?

2andahalfpints · 19/05/2021 19:05

Gliss shine spray and the body shop used to do a blue body spray, can't remember the name but it was something to do with water, always wish I could smell that smell again

I loved Revlon Flex too! The smell and the texture.
Swingoutsistersledge2 · 19/05/2021 20:02

@Mellonstripe . I was just about to post Flex Shampoo and Conditioner. The smell was divine. We should start a petition to bring it back !

Swingoutsistersledge2 · 19/05/2021 20:09

Thought of some more the perfumes I really miss from the early 90's. New West perfume and Versace Versus for women that came in a lovely red bottle.

Squiz81 · 19/05/2021 20:12

Discussing this with my mum today, she still misses the Cremolia hand cream she used to get from Boots. I got some of the Skin Feast from Tropic and it smells just like it, it took me right back! Just that Cremolia only cost about £1.50

IDontKnowHowToBeBetter · 19/05/2021 20:13

I don't know if it's the same stuff, but you can get a gliss shine spray in Home bargains, Savers erc

ThatIsMyPotato · 19/05/2021 20:17

Oh that sunflower spray from the natural collection. I miss it.

Body Shop Oceana, it was gorgeous 😍
Cheesypea · 19/05/2021 20:20

Vidal sasson, shampoo, conditioner and finishing rinse.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 19/05/2021 20:25

I'm still grieving for Rimmel Black Cherries. Best lipstick colour I ever had 😭

ThatIsMyPotato · 19/05/2021 20:26

Body Shop Oceana, it was gorgeous 😍

I wish I could find a dupe for it

allfurcoatnoknickers · 19/05/2021 20:26

I miss Becca, esp the Aqualuminous foundation and also everything Ruby and Millie :(

Hellvelyn · 19/05/2021 20:31

Very recent but Boots pink curl creme. Dirt cheap and makes my frizz actually curl nicely. Where has it gone? No one in Boots can answer my desperate questioning.

ThePontiacBandit · 19/05/2021 20:32

Oh yes the Boots sunflower spray was lovely!

I loved John Frieda’s sheer blonde spotlight detangler. You ran it through damp hair and it detangled and made your blonde highlights brighter. You can only seem to import it from the USA these days for a sky high fee. It was a fiver in the 00s!

frugalkitty · 19/05/2021 20:34

There was a retro skincare thread or two a few years ago which was a delightful thread of people reminiscing about products from their youth.

I agree with Flex shampoo and conditioner, I wish they'd bring them back too.

Lunde · 19/05/2021 20:42

Max Factor Ageless Elixir foundation - It was great as it was un-perfumed and had a sunscreen on spf 15

WineGetsMeThroughIt · 19/05/2021 20:55

The Jean Paul Gaultier Classique Eau de Parfum I. The lace corset bottle. They changed it to the ugly red corset and reformulated it at the same time. I searched high and low for a bottle of the original after I ran out of mine, but no luck. I have the new one, but it's just not the same 😭

@mellonsprite Ohhh yes, Revlon Flex! Wonderful. And Elseve Balsam.

ThatIsMyPotato · 19/05/2021 21:15

WineGetsMeThroughIt the original bottle is so much nicer

IsItSafeToBeOptimisticYet · 19/05/2021 21:15

Impulse o2 for me as well. I loved that one.

DailyMaui · 19/05/2021 21:20

Mary Quant makeup was fabulous. I once found a chemist that sold loads of it at bargain prices and bought tons. Probably all out of date but they lasted well!
