Discontinued products. Oh, the heartache!

I wasted a very pleasant hour or so yesterday afternoon drowning in nostalgia on the 90s teem magazine thread that is in Classics - www.mumsnet.com/Talk/mumsnet_classics/4178119-Early-Noughties-teen-mag-ridiculousness?pg=14.

That sent me down an Instagram wormhole on the @90steenmagazinearchiveuk page (well worth a look!)

I have recently had my world rocked by the realisation that my favourite By Terry lipstain has been discontinued, and that Crabtree & Evelyn no longer do the Jojoba Oil soaps that I loved.

However, this trawl through 90s fashion and beauty has made me ache for some of the products I lived in then.

I know it's been done before but I would give my (lengthening) eye-teeth for:

Impulse O2; Miss Selfridge nail varnish (scented or glow in the dark); Charlse Worthington thickening spray (it smelt amazing though did nothing for the thickness of my hair); BATH PEARLS; 40 million soaps shaped like various animals etc.

The thing I miss the most though is the huge range of body products that Boots Natural Collection used to do. My friends and I whiled away many hours milling around sniffing various body sprays, shower jels, bubble baths and God knows what else.

Seeing photos of the Boots catalogue Natural Collection pages from around 1996 was such a visceral hit of nostalgia it was akin to a punch in the stomach.

Am I alone?

Loads of past favourites on this thread!

I still miss Vidal Sassoon shampoo and conditioner, it left my hair glossy and almond-scented for days.

Monsoon Shimo perfume, it reminds me of a lovely time in my life.

More recently Superdrug seem to have discontinued their B. Essence, a kind of thick toner/light serum which my skin loves. Can't find anything else like it!

Chickydoo · 20/05/2021 08:38

Space NK laughter. Gorgeous scent, really miss it!

TheVampiresWife · 20/05/2021 08:42

Loads Sad

Coty L'aimant Creamy Skin Perfume
St Ives menthol deep conditioner
LouLou Blue
Rimmel Black Cherry lipstick
The Body Shop Rose Musk (and the perfume oil bar generally)
Revlon Flex
Bourjois little pots

And don't even get me started about reformulations - they're almost worse than discontinuation because the thing is still there but it's wrong.

TheVampiresWife · 20/05/2021 08:44

@haliborange0verdose M&S still do Isis, they just changed the name to Aqua

userxx · 20/05/2021 08:47

@haliborange0verdose I think the M&S perfume is now called Aqua. Maybe the name was a bit too similar to the other one.

commatose · 20/05/2021 08:54

Space NK Laughter was the perfect EdT to spray on after a shower on a hot summer's day - so cooling and refreshing. And a brilliant name too.

tuttifuckinfruity · 20/05/2021 09:25

You can probably still get it, but the smell of that cheap red Diesel perfume just transports me right back. It was about £6 in Savers etc, and was a sickly sweet coconut smell - smelled like a big pint of Malibu as I used to smother myself in it before going out.

The mans one was white and very pungent. Almost vinegary.

I moved on from that to Davidoff Cool Water, which is still lovely

ALittleBitOfThisAndThat · 20/05/2021 09:35

Boots Tea Tree and Witch Hazel foaming cleanser - discontinued in the last few months, I’ve been using it for years and it’s the only product that I’ve found that keeps my - and my teenage son’s - skin clear.

The Boots pink curl cream seems to something that they’ve stopped and started for years, it generally reappears repackaged but identical. I’ve never been able to get on with it but have tried it a few times, as I’d like it to work because it’s so cheap!

Serenster · 20/05/2021 09:36

Scents for me, mostly. Dior’s Tendre Poison and Tom Ford’s original fragrance are both hugely missed Sad

Thanks - still in a similar bottle I see! I will look out for it in future

Thanks for the tip! Now if only I could track down all my other favourites that had just been renamed.....

This thread takes me right back to my teens. Beauty wise I miss

Timotai shampoo the original one.

John frieda shampoo in the purple square bottles. The smell was lovely and it sorted my teen frizz out.

Shaders and toners wash in/wash out hair colour

Naturel deodorant

02 and Dominique impulse

Vanilla fields perfume

Exclamation perfume

Body shop animal soaps

Body shop fuzzy peach and dewberry range.

Body shop shampoo can't remember the name, but it was blue and iirc had a minty smell to it.

Body Shop passion fruit cleanser.

Boots natural collection shower gels.

L'Oréal hair mousse in a white can. That stuff would hold my scrunched hair for hours

Heather shimmer lipstick and black cherry lip stick.

Powder paper from the body shop

Cosmetics 2 go Lush just isn't the same.

When this was released they did another 2 perfumes and one was green (forgotten the name) but it was very floral and would transport me straight back to 1996 if I could smell it again!

Darklane · 20/05/2021 14:08

Miners make up, esp the cake eyeliner & cake mascara you spit on Grin

Anyone remember Barbara Daly make up, think it was Tesco that sold it. Very popular after she did Princess Diana’s wedding make up.

Revlon Intimate perfume, wore that a lot

Patapouf · 20/05/2021 14:16

Marc jacobs kumquat perfume. I'd sell a kidney for it.

Twinkie01 · 20/05/2021 14:28

@2andahalfpints

Gliss shine spray and the body shop used to do a blue body spray, can't remember the name but it was something to do with water, always wish I could smell that smell again
I ordered 4 canisters of this yesterday from Amazon and it came today!! DH was like what shine in a tin. But everyone comments on my shined hair, I don't tell them that it's fake!
janlevinson · 20/05/2021 14:32

Space NK Champaca perfume. Really cheap and smelled amazing. Never been able to find similar.

BumBurnerBum · 20/05/2021 14:46

Oh I remember that! Does it make your hair greasy though? Let me know how you get on, I want shiny hair!

Two really recent ones:
Molton brown coco and sandalwood shower gel
Nuxe almond and orange fondant shower cream

FixItUpChappie · 20/05/2021 14:56

I still mourn the Body Shops Woody Sandalwood perfume Brew

Coniferhedge · 20/05/2021 15:07

Lots of my old favourites on here - Flex, Vidal Sassoon, Body Shop Oceania and Rommel Black Cherries. I always feel fortunate that one of my favourite perfumes from my teens, Body Shop White Musk, is still made and I still wear it when I’m feeling nostalgic.

The other thing I miss is an Impulse body spray from the 90s called Free Spirit. People always used to compliment me when I wore it and asked what perfume I was wearing. It was only Impulse!

Coniferhedge · 20/05/2021 15:08

I meant Rimmel not Rommel!

whippitwoowoo · 20/05/2021 15:09

I remember buying my mum a Charles of the Ritz red lipstick as a present when I was about 9 or 10.
That brand hasn’t been around for donkeys years.

I’d love to buy some Revlon flex. ☺️
