Do people moisturise their whole body after every bath/shower?

Or how often? And if so, with what? Have you any good everyday recommendations that are not too expensive, as I assume it takes a lot of product??
I have got very lazy with lockdown and don't think I have moisturised my whole body in over a year ...

No never

@AppleSouffle

Just out of interest, do all your DHs and DSs moisturise their body after each shower? If not, do they get dry itchy skin? Or is this another female time and money trap?
I remember reading a thread about body lotion and it seems it's rare for white men/boys to use it but absolutely the norm for Black men/boys.

The more you moisturise the more the body learns not to produce its own sebum - This is one of things people say similar to that thing that greasy haired people are told 'if you stop washing your hair for a fortnight you will no longer have oily hair'. Just not true.

I used to think moisturising my body was a bit of a faff. So I'd only bother doing it once in a blue moon. And my dry skin stayed resolutely dry and bumpy. And then I started to regard it as a lovely few mins of self-care, time to connect with my own body (aware that sounds horrifically Gwyneth-like) and now I love it.

I use Cereve every day. I used to be really bad and not bother. The biggest game-changer for me was to put the container in the shower and do it before I get out. It takes seconds now.

I have just used the Vaseline men's range as I've just got out the bath. There is a huge market for men's lotions here, there is a men's range in just about every brand. I just happen to have this particular one which I bought for my son and he clearly hasn't used it. Smile

Every time, always have, my skin feels horrible if I don’t.

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 18/05/2021 19:30

Maybe once a month, more often in winter than summer as my skin dries with the heating.

I think with your average white British man, it just wouldn't cross their minds to use lotion. So many of them are still iffy about using a facial moisturiser (even if their poor complexions are crying out for one!) Grin

And with the older generation, even sun lotion even though they know they need it. Lotions and potions are seen as being for women.
Changing among younger people though.

@Serpenta Darker skin can look a bit ashy/grey if it isn’t moisturised. Plus men taking care of their body, appearance etc is much more normal in many other cultures. Then you also have to consider that religion also can have an impact on grooming, for example muslims should remove their armpit and pubic hair every 40 days as prescribed by the sunnah. So its both common and normal for muslim men to have hairless armpits and crotches most of the time.

Serpenta · 18/05/2021 19:47

Yes it's interesting to consider different male grooming routines in different countries. The idea that anything other than soap and water is a bit sissyish is still quite prevalent here, even though as @Gwenhwyfar says that's changing a bit with younger men.

I'd forgotten that sunscreen was also regarded as just a woman's product. Letting your skin sizzle and blister to prove you're a real man!

Gwenhwyfar · 18/05/2021 20:06

I also know men with eczema who won't deal with it properly.

YellowandGreenToBeSeen · 18/05/2021 21:14

Yep, every day. I have some super expensive creams (for example, Laura Mercier) and some dirt cheap (Aldi’s 89p body lotion is the nuts for every day). Applied after every bath or shower (so at least daily).

NowWhatUsernameShallIHave · 20/05/2021 04:42

I do it barely once a week

I read in a dermatologist magazine that if you do it after every shower you body basically becomes sluggish in rebalancing your skin itself after and you basically get into a cycle

Plus natural or not I personally don’t think internally it’s that good to have so many chemicals absorbed into your body

ZaraW · 20/05/2021 08:46

I just had my annual mole check. Dermatologist commented how good my skin was for 50 years. I only use hand cream and use body lotion on feet only.

Actual dermatologists don't say this though.

No, I stay in bed the extra 5 minsGrin

Tomasinabombadil · 22/05/2021 21:00

@Aloadaballs

I don’t but I should! On the rare occasion I do I’ll use what ever I have on hand, I did love Avon dry oil spray but no Avon where I live now. I’ll be following this with interest!
You can buy Avon online. 🙂

I love the original dry oil spray especially in the warmer months, brilliant for deterring midges and mozzies. 🦟🦟🦟

Tomasinabombadil · 22/05/2021 21:18

I got rather lazy since the first lockdown because I’m retired and not having to go to work, so haven’t applied body moisturiser every day, didn’t shower every day either anyway, (sometimes just a top & tail).
I did moisturise every day after my shower when I was working.
However I’m returning to daily full body moisturiser especially as my legs & arms appear rather dry now.🙂

failingmother · 23/05/2021 00:43

Every day I have very dry skin but Superdrug Vitamin E range is really well priced, not to heavy, feels and smells good.

BornAgainCountryBumpkin1 · 28/05/2021 00:21

Yes E45 all the way. Skin became super sensitive & dry after dd was born, but also on the hunt for a multi tasking shower gel/soap that will do it for me. You used to be able to buy a Nivea wash off cream? Loved that. Although if not concentrating there was potential for an embarrassing way to have the paramedics find you when attempting to leave the shower.....
