For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Yes, I'm sure for maximum efficacy clean skin works best but in your case it sounds like maximum efficacy is too much, potentially. In clinic LED treatment is of a higher strength not available to consumer electronics, that's why I thought of it.

I think there's a real love for rounded cuts with the curly cutters. They're quite high maintenance in terms of styling, I prefer minimal layers in the length too and just some face framing at the front, it's not that complex 🤷

I have the bottles here!

Booster says Baicapil and Anagain then the "naturals" type ones under it

botemp · 20/01/2023 21:07

Never heard of them but a quick Google tells me they're patented ingredients but all made up of natural plant extracts 🤷

By coincidence I've also recently started using The Ordinary hair serum. Am also on biotin & just started silica, both for the hair. I've been on medication for many years that's known for causing sometimes quite severe shedding. IDK if it will grow back but I'm trying to stop it continuing to get worse. Wish I'd done my research when I first started on it, I've lost over half my hair volume at least. I'll update when/if it looks like I'm getting any benefits from it.

Rebel2023 · 20/01/2023 22:18

@MudLady I'm on Xolair which has a reputation for hair loss
Also just had covid and antivirals so hoping that doesn't cause more!

MudLady · 21/01/2023 09:19

Oh and I'm also - sporadically - using a derma stamp on the thin areas too. Apparently it helps to stimulate the follicles and/or encourage the formation of new follicles. It's not exactly comfortable, but less unpleasant than electrolysis, & definitely less than botox (in the scalp, for migraines).

SophieLion · 22/01/2023 08:10

Yes Bo. But the curlsmith one repairs more bonds I think plus contains protein. I prefer it to olaplex. Might do a bond salve treatment for my next wash actually.

Happy with my hair cut although it's quite a bit shorter so I'm getting used to that. I will Google the wolfie/reverse mullet ninny.

I personally prefer layers in my length as my hair underneath is way straighter than my top layer so everything gets dragged down if no layers.

Rebel2023 · 22/01/2023 21:02

This has been getting good reviews for hair loss but it's not cheap!

Hey Sophie. Yes, my hair doesn't curl from the root and whilst medium thickness I have a lot and in the past the weight of it has pulled the curl out a bit. I think the first curly cut I had was brilliant, but the subsequent 3 or 4 times it was just being thinned out too much. It will be interesting to see if it will need SOME weight taken out as it grows back. I'm really pleased with it anyway, and losing a couple of inches of length means that all the semi permanent colour has now gone, which feels good!

I tend to be really sceptical of anything promising accelerated hair growth as it's just not physically possible (and if it is, then it would be a medication), so at best it's just a hair strengthening treatment that means ends of hair don't break off and are preserved, therefore it looks like it's growing when really you're just not losing snapped ends. Fine if you just want to grow healthy hair but very deceitful marketing if you're struggling with hair loss.

I've also seen a lot of buzz for some sort of cocktail from a dermatologist out of Singapore (but you can get it anywhere, it's sold by a major professional brand that's in a lot of aesthetic clinics). I think it needs to be injected but there's also a DIY at home regime. When I looked into it further it seems to be mostly effective for telogen effluvium and popular with those who had post covid hair loss. Think it's just a sort of booster to get everything working most optimally.

I also use a dermaroller once a month, on slightly damp hair otherwise it's rather messy. I've been meaning to switch over to a dermastamp but when I looked into it I could only see the brand name ones that were £££, or dodgie ones off Amazon with a long delivery time. Did you just buy a cheapie Mudlady? I don't really mind the sensation of the dermaroller but I do tend to leave it alone after.

Sophie, I think your hair is curlier than mine and Ninny's, would probably explain the difference in cut preferences and why curly cuts don't always work out the same on wavy hair.

I see current body now has a led mask for hair growth, it's got a good number of lights for the price but I'll wait a bit on user reviews.

I too have been using the ordinary serum for couple of months now. My hair has been losing volume at the front hair line for years now. It is actually filling these areas in- slowly, but it is working. I am using the eyelash one too and that is working. I would not say they are longer but they are most definitely hairs along the lash line where there didn't used to be.
I used to shed head hair alot for many year sand went from a very thick head if hair to a normal head of hair. The BIG game changer for me was increasing my protein intake ALOT. I only have a tiny amount of hair fall now and my hair is growing stupidly quickly

botemp · 23/01/2023 13:22

We're all such collective sheep for the ordinary hair serum, and we didn't even coordinate on it 😃

I do wonder what's at work, there's a lot of proven stimulating ingredients in it like caffeine so I assumed it would do something, whether the specific peptide ingredient (forgot the name, I think it started with R) does something I don't know. People like that caffeine shampoo too, and daily scalp massage is effective as well which you do by distributing the serum. Anyhow, it does seem to do something if you have some hair loss issue but if you're 23 and were just born with thin hair I doubt it'll give you thicker hair.

I eat plenty of protein, for me high dose vitamin D helped too but that was under advisement of a dermatologist wouldn't recommend everyone to just go out and do that on their own. It is just an underlying health issue for me so it is more managing that, hair is a side effect of it but it's obviously a very visible aspect of it.

OP posts:
Rebel2023 · 23/01/2023 13:24

Loads of protein here too, as I'm addicted to the Aldi protein chocolate mousse Grin
I take 4000IU vitamin d a day after a high dose prescription for a few months

SophieLion · 23/01/2023 14:38

Well I think the most important thing is that you're pleased with your cut ninny Smile I'm also pleased with mine - as I said, quite a bit shorter so a different look but washed today and soooo much easier with less hair!

I'm wondering how an LED mask goes on the hair ..... off to Google

The bounce curl vitamins for hair growth had quite a lot of vitamin B if I recall correctly. My homeopath didn't like me taking so much bit B though so I stopped.

SophieLion · 23/01/2023 14:40

Oh were you looking at the one for around €751 and looks like a ski/cycling helmet Bo? Grin
Mind you the face LED masks hardly make one look normal either!

MudLady · 23/01/2023 15:15

I bought this one Bo. It’s a decent size & the little cover on the end is useful for sterilising it. It’s easy to adjust although I’ve read that some people have had issues with it sticking, I wonder if they bent a needle TBH.

Rebel2023 · 23/01/2023 16:00

Might have some thinning but it’s still growing in length like a weed!

SallieSallow · 23/01/2023 17:19

Hi everyone 👋

I’ve been AWOL for ages, I couldn’t log into MN for a while (it’s still a bit glitchy now) then I couldn’t find the thread 🙄

Not much to report skincare wise, I’ve kept my routine very minimal this winter (no ret or tret!) and think my skin has been the better for it, I’ve not had any dry or flaky patches which is unusual given the cold weather we’ve had. I do need to start using my Bear again though 🐻 completely fell out of the habit when I started a new job.

I made an attempt at following a wavy girl hair routine without much success as seemed to make my hair more bushy & frizzy, not many waves or curls in sight 🤨 It does need cutting though as haven’t been to to the hairdresser for about 8 months so will have a good chop and might try again in spring. Yours looks great Rebel I have hair envy!

Martinisarebetterdirty · 23/01/2023 17:45

Yes gorgeous hair Rebel. Talking of red led masks, does anyone know if they can damage your eyes? The current body one seems to be used without goggles which surprised me, but I can’t find any medical research (that I trust).

botemp · 24/01/2023 10:28

Sallie, good to see you again. How's the move been treating you? I've done a lot of wavy girl experimenting to come to the conclusion k18 solves most of my problems 🤷

Sophie, yes the €751 monstrosity, I was looking at one shaped like a baseball cap (with a whole light show underneath 😂 not sure it's much of a disguise) but that's over 2k and about double the lights. If you get all the currentbody led masks (they do a neck and hands one too) you can probably cosplay as RoboCop 🤖

Martinis, I'd wear some sort of eye protection with it, but my eyes are already sensitive to begin with. NGL, even though it's considered safe I do sometimes wonder if we're going to see a similar thing like with the tanning beds.

Thanks Mudlady, I'll check if my local Amazon has that too, what depth do you use, did you build up to it?

OP posts:
MudLady · 24/01/2023 11:11

According to this site it needs to be 2.5 - 3 mm to get to the correct depth where the follicles are. I just did it at the 3mm depth, the main issue while using to be careful of is not to move or drag the stamp on the skin. Also, obviously, not to let it catch on the hair. I usually do it from front to back, parting the hair multiple times to allow better sight of & access to the skin. I use surgical alcohol to sterilise it before & after every use.

botemp · 24/01/2023 11:26

Thanks, I'd have to check but I think mine is 5mm Blush although that article says the follicles are at 2.5-3mm depth, not that necessarily is the depth used. I'll have to check where I read up on it as I wouldn't have bought a deeper needle than necessary, but 5mm with a derma stamp is probably less pleasant than a dermaroller. And yy, to sterilising before and after use, especially at these depths it's very important.

OP posts:
botemp · 24/01/2023 11:32

Nvm, mine is 1.5mm, and my research says anything from 0.5-2.5 at the beginning stages of hair loss. Deeper than that you risk scarring and should only be done by professionals. It doesn't create new hair growth, but similar to the Ordinary serum it makes the individual hairs thicker.

OP posts:
Wheresthebeach · 24/01/2023 11:34

I was wondering has anyone done micro needling on jaw line with any good (or otherwise) results?

I've used various serums on my hair to deal with thinning but not tried micro needling...so may give that a go as well. I've been taking Collagen but I'm not seeing much of an impact sadly.
