For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

@Southbucksldn This one is worth considering as well:
www.dermatica.co.uk/shop/azelaic-acid
It's in the form of a light moisturizer, unscented.

NinnyNewName · 24/11/2021 20:37

Thanks NotMyCat. I'm pretty much exclusively using Treluxe in terms of styling although I did use that humidity gel in the Summer. Can't think of the brand at the moment. The one Welshie is often talking about.

Did you see that trip to Arizone for 2 days to celebrate Bounce Curl's birthday? Lots of curlies went. Seems such a strange concept now, travelling all that way for such a short period of time. But maybe that's partly because we have an electric car now and DH has really got into it.

Looking forward to my Xmas French pharmacy fix in the Alps!

NotMyCat · 24/11/2021 20:42

@NinnyNewName I did! The goody bags they got looked amazing
Kiyo has treluxe, ouidad, ecoslay etc so I'm keeping an eye out. Apparently the discount varies, my friend got an email with 15% but mine was 25%

Tsmummy08 · 25/11/2021 07:45

Hello all - I wouldn't say I got sucked into Black Friday but definitely took advantage of the CB discount and got some Augustinus Bader Rich Cream (ahem) - no judgement please Grin it's so nice and makes my skin look lovely!

@Southbucksldn I haven't been diagnosed with rosacea but probably have it (seeing a derm is on my to-do list) - I've been using retinols of varying strengths for years but find my skin looks better (less pink overall) when I take a break from it, but it's undeniably great for wrinkling/texture. I personally couldn't tolerate any version of the BR P50s....

BabyPigeon83 · 25/11/2021 09:15

@Tsmummy08 Could this be a dupe for that rich cream? www.paulaschoice.co.uk/resist-anti-aging-intensive-repair-cream/m7810.html?dwvar_m7810_size=fullsize&cgid=moisturisers-without-spf

botemp · 25/11/2021 09:40

I very much side eye the whole anti ageing spiel of Augustinus Bader (it's really la mer and their special algae that listens to classical music nonsense all over again) and the stupid price tag but I totally believe it's a very nice cream to use. I've tried it on the back of my hand and it's very cosmetically elegant but I'm sure there must be something else like it.

I still haven't checked out my cult beauty order, I appreciate your encouragement pigeon. Normally I wouldn't hesitate getting my favourite (stupidly priced) mascara but I wear so little makeup at the moment that it would be a bit of a waste. I thought I'd figured it out by adding an AHA deodorant from Kosas that I already use and like but I'm now 0.40 short of free delivery. Argh. The Westman Atelier travel set is oos so that's a no go too. Nothing Surratt that I fancy so I'm running out of ideas. Maybe I'll just optimistically order two body lotions 🤷 I don't think I need anything for my hair, probably have enough to last me another two years.

South, prescription azelaic is also easily available in eastern europe for very little money, 15 or 20%, the latter is milder as it's in cream form, the 15% gel is more aggressive and more suited to acne skin. Don't go using it all at once though.

OP posts:
NotMyCat · 25/11/2021 09:50

So annoying when you're just short of delivery!
I think the cheapest thing is £2.75 for a mini toothpaste Grin

BabyPigeon83 · 25/11/2021 10:14

@botemp Laughing at the la mer algae listening to music story, it never ceases to amuse me each time I am reminded of it. The fact that ppl fell for it makes it even better.
I think the DE lotion is really good and it's at a nice price now on sale. But since you never used it it before could be risky to get two. I do like it more than the Paula's Choice one and you get more for the money.
Off topic, Pat McGrath is running a progressive sale, I got this at 25% off (I know, more makeup 😃)
www.patmcgrath.com/products/mthrshp-mega-celestial-odyssey?variant=39522029207621

Also Victoria Beckham beauty has a 20% off as well...

botemp · 25/11/2021 10:22

Yuppie 80s/90s marketing was the best pigeon, it was total bs, but enjoyable bs. I really miss it even though I barely remember it. The ambassador party and ferrero rocher made those things so special somehow. I think most children at the time (I certainly did) thought Vienetta was the poshest thing ever. Marketing agencies were king back then now we have influencers 🤢

OP posts:
BabyPigeon83 · 25/11/2021 10:48

Vienetta looked pretty fancy to me as a child, I think it looks a bit different/worse now. Maybe they changed it/made it smaller? The marketing then was over the top. 😄
Influencers/celebrities who use la mer in their Harper's bazaar skincare routines are most likely given them for free by the brand. Or they use it as a way of displaying status level, same for Barbara Strum products. I guess there are ppl who love the feel of then products and can afford then easily and that's fine, as long as they know to take the promises with a pinch of salt.

I love how those celebrities/influencers also conveniently forget to mention the facials and procedures they undergo regularly to look like they do.

botemp · 25/11/2021 11:07

I always marvel that not a single celebrity mentions using tretinoin. I only ever see them mention it when they tried it and they couldn't tolerate it and it always feels a bit like they're apologising for their skin therefore not being hyperreal as would be expected of them. My conclusion, is thus, everyone must be using it from quite a young age and then do all the weird beauty treatments/procedures on top.

There's definitely a segment of overpriced skincare touted by celebrities as the secret to their good skin. I doubt they pay for it or just don't care about the cost. Dr Barbara Sturm is not much of a doctor, she has a PhD in podiatry. I preferred it when we were just deceiving people with fantastical stories of algae and classical music.

Anyhow, I'm still shocked how cheap Vienetta actually is. I thought we were poor for never being able to afford it but it was just because my parents were health nuts and we were the opposite of poor, Vienetta marketing had me fooled though. I think I only ever had it at a Christmas party once (I thought it was magical) but no idea how it compares now to then.

Tsmummy08 · 25/11/2021 11:14

@BabyPigeon83 The PC one has retinol in it which the AB one doesn't (I'm avoiding Vit As at the moment), but looks like it would be a good rich product for winter skin. I've checked out lists of recommended dupes for the AB cream but nothing jumps out - it's defo nothing like Weleda Skin Food that some have suggested, sadly :) I've tried so many heavy face moisturisers over the years!

This is a winter treat after a shitty few weeks - I won't be repurchasing regularly unless my lotto numbers come up!

Tsmummy08 · 25/11/2021 12:43

@BabyPigeon83 Just looking back over some of my past "rich cream"-type purchases, Kate Somerville Delikate and Darphin Hydraskin Rich were great, and I would RP both (the latter is highly fragranced, so you may not get on with that).

BabyPigeon83 · 25/11/2021 13:44

@Tsmummy08 Oh, I thought the PC one having retinol was a plus. I only ever used a sample of this and it seemed very pleasant but it's too rich for me normally. It's just that reading the ingredients of your moisturizer reminded me of this PC one. It's not at all to say you should choose one instead of the other because it's cheaper, nothing like that. 100% no judgement, it just popped in my head reading the ingredients. 🙂
@botemp Now I feel like eating a vienetta!
Those "come to bed with me" skincare videos only vary a little. Some of the celebrities are very young with good skin and good genes.Others have good genes but are nearing 30 and feel like they have to use skincare and use some random expensive smelly stuff. But they do go to esteticians regularly especially if they struggle with something or have sub damage and then regularly have fillers and other procedures. A small number have a solid routine and use sunscreen regularly or know about actives (maybe because they struggled with skin issues) . I don't care what procedures they have but they do give the impression that they just look like that with no effort and us normal people have no excuse for looking older as time goes by.
Also most of them (even younger influencers) have lip fillers...

Tsmummy08 · 25/11/2021 14:29

Babypigeon83 Ah I misunderstood! I'll add that PC one to the list to try when I'm ready to jump back into actives, thanks :)

botemp · 25/11/2021 18:38

I suspect you'd quite like Sulwhasoo's overnight vitalizing mask Tsn, not that that's cheap either (but a little goes a long way) and quite heavily fragranced but it's quite the HG in k-beauty for people with dry skin desperate for legitimate glow (not the cloying heavy cream fake glow).

Pigeon hope you're not on a diet Grin I saw they do little mini sizes of them now, they look adorable.

OP posts:
botemp · 26/11/2021 08:38

Well for all my "I barely ever wear makeup anymore" spiel, I went a bit mad last night as my local equivalent of SpaceNK was getting rid of all their Surratt stock at 70% (I'm guessing they're discontinuing selling the brand). Was left wandering this morning if I should order more Blush

I saw actual SpaceNK now also has drunk elephant 25% off but the body lotion is oos, is it still only Cult Beauty and SpaceNK that stock DE?

OP posts:
BabyPigeon83 · 26/11/2021 10:05

@botemp Yes! I'm on a diet of mince pies and ginger bread, so mini vienetta would feel at home. Grin

Boots also stocks Drunk Elephant. I don't think it's stocked anywhere else besides the ones mentioned above...

I never tried surrat but I seen it a lot on Michelle's Wong YouTube channel. It looks nice. 😄

botemp · 26/11/2021 10:34

I used to watch her channel when it was very small but she got very sponsored where everything was always 'good' and got very flashy very quickly. Went a bit tone deaf in the pandemic, I think there was a sponsored video where she discussed the death or illness of a relative that popped up on my suggested feed that me go a bit WTF, has she come down to earth yet or has it gotten even more 'luxury'?

Annoyingly SpaceNK have sent me an extra 10% off code, urgh, I hate black Friday, now the cult beauty offer feels a rip off...

OP posts:
BabyPigeon83 · 26/11/2021 11:39

How come I don't recieve anything from spaceNK? Maybe because I don't use it often and I left my ndulge (annoying name) points expire.

I think Michele Wong is pretty nice, she uses stuff I can't afford (VB very expensive moisturizer) but she is pleasant to watch.

botemp · 26/11/2021 11:43

Code for extra 10% off at SpaceNK is BF10E-OPOODNM3QW, I don't think it's a personal one. I haven't shopped with them in years, so maybe that's why 🤷

OP posts:
BabyPigeon83 · 26/11/2021 12:02

Oh it does work, thanks. Grin

SallieSallow · 29/11/2021 20:45

I’ve sat on my hands and deleted all the Black Friday/cyber Monday e-mails and didn’t buy a thing Shock

I’m being super frugal as planning to leave my job early next year, I will obviously look for something else but want something low stress which usually = low salary. Good thing I’ve already got a lifetime supply of makeup Grin

NotMyCat · 29/11/2021 21:41

Absolutely no comment on my Black Friday orders. TBF I can't actually remember Grin so it'll all be a nice surprise
My dad got me the Bobbi brown beach perfume as it was on offer

BabyPigeon83 · 30/11/2021 13:03

I wish I was sitting on my hands as well, but I did get most Christmas presents on sale. And I got some stuff I had on my list to buy anyway.
Did anyone try those Wayne Goss mistery bags? I was sitting on the fence for that one and decided against it in the end.
