Considering Rhinoplasty

So I had a consultation yesterday for Rhinoplasty - I've wanted a nose job since I was 15 and at the age of 31 I am now in a position where I am able to afford one. I previously had filler in my nose which fixed my side profile, but it obviously did not really do much to narrow my wide nose which is my main area of concern.

I keep going back and forth with my decision on whether to go ahead - the surgeon I saw was great, very realistic in terms of a results and he also uses the Ultrasonic technique as opposed to the 'hammer and chisel' technique, which apparently means less bruising and a quicker recovery.

I've watched so many nose job vlogs so I feel like I sort of know what to expect in the recovery process, but a few have mentioned other side effects that worry me such as hair loss after the surgery (although temporary), spider veins becoming visible on the nose & trouble breathing.

I am also very aware that there is a 10% chance with this surgery that a revision might be needed, regardless of how skilled the surgeon is.

I would love to hear from anyone that's had it done - both good and bad experiences - particularly if you've had the Ultrasonic rhinoplasty! Aware everyone's experience is different, but I find comfort in speaking to other people who have gone through with it!

@Branleuse I'm sure thats how a lot of them work, but the consultation I've booked is with the actual surgeon that I am interested in and I've been told it'll be a full consultation with photos taken etc. He also has his own clinic and charges for consultations there so it'll be interesting to know if there's a difference.

I'll let you know!

2 week update!

I’ve taken the tape off today. It looks great but weird at the same time. The new shape is obvious but there is still swelling. Where the bridge has been narrowed the skin looks a bit loose but I am assuming/hoping that gets tighter over time (or it might just be swelling?). The tip has come down a bit so a bit less piggy, but the columella (sp?) is still very swollen and bulging down which I am also very much hoping will resolve itself in the next couple of weeks. This means it still looks a bit turned up. My nostrils are still slightly different but look much better now the tape is off and I’ve removed one of the biggest bogies I’ve ever seen (sorry TMI) that was kind of holding it in a weird position.

There is still loads of sticky residue on my nose from the tape which I have wiped a couple of times with a very mild cleanser but I don’t want to over-do it so I might just have to live with it for a few days and hope it eventually comes off. I’m still not supposed to get it wet so can’t wash it off.

I am using a saline spray a couple of times per day up my nose to loosen anything up there and clear it out. Not suppose to blow my nose but I’m spraying then ‘aggressively breathing out’ holding a tissue under my nose to clear it out as I am naturally a bit snotty so have to do something.

Nothing else to report really. I have my next follow up appointment on Saturday.

Hi @BasinHaircut, it's really good to hear everything in so much detail Smile. I think it must be quite an emotional time as you want to see a good change but have to accept there's swelling and a lot of healing still to happen.
Hang on in there!

ABitOfAShitShow · 12/04/2021 07:52

Getting ready to head to the hospital, ladies. Surgery is this afternoon. It’s finally here!

HappyEm81 · 12/04/2021 08:04

@ABitOfAShitShow oh wow! How're you feeling? What changes are you having to your nose?
Good luck. I'm sure it'll go well.

ABitOfAShitShow · 12/04/2021 08:08

@HappyEm81 Thank you!

Having various things done. Piezo technique, open septorhinoplasty.

I feel ok but I’ve barely slept (I do have insomnia anyway) and it’s starting to feel real now!

Just want it done now. Grin

HappyEm81 · 12/04/2021 08:17

@ABitOfAShitShow I'm still at the stage of researching surgeons to book consultations with, but I'm definitely interested in the piezo technique.

Wishing you lots of luck. Such an exciting day for you.

namechange202086 · 12/04/2021 08:33

Thank for update @BasinHaircut .

Good luck @ABitOfAShitShow ! Hope it goes well today.

Pipsydodo · 12/04/2021 08:34

Hope all goes well @ABitOfAShitShow! Who is doing your procedure?
Very excited for you x

ABitOfAShitShow · 12/04/2021 08:37

Thanks, all you lovely people!

@Pipsydodo Charles East is doing it. x

Pipsydodo · 12/04/2021 09:03

Would love to hear how it all goes. I was really interested in him but was such a long waiting list. Did you book your surgery a long time ago?

ABitOfAShitShow · 12/04/2021 09:15

@Pipsydodo July, I think. It wouldn’t usually be this long though - it’s because of Covid and lack of hospital/theatre space for private, cosmetic procedures. Maybe it’ll clear down a bit soon.

BasinHaircut · 12/04/2021 13:35

Ohh good luck @ABitOfAShitShow! Exciting! Let us know how you are feeling afterwards.

Another v small update from me - my nose looks so different today (from yesterday when I removed the tape) it’s mad. I think the tape was holding it ‘up’ and it’s now adjusting, and the swollen columella has really come down overnight. Or just evened out over the whole length of it, whereas before half of it was held up with tape and only the lower half was swollen maybe?

I don’t know but the difference is visible, which I wasn’t expecting.

I am still obsessed with my nostrils and keen to discuss them with my surgeon on Saturday. They are definitely slightly different.

namechange202086 · 12/04/2021 15:06

How is the bruising now @BasinHaircut ?

I've still got 12 weeks to go until my surgery.

ABitOfAShitShow · 12/04/2021 17:14

Hi, all. Back in the room now. Super groggy but can’t sleep it off as I have insomnia. All good so far. He seems happy! Smile

namechange202086 · 12/04/2021 17:36

Glad you are ok @ABitOfAShitShow . Hope the next few days aren't too rough. Are you staying overnight in hospital?

ABitOfAShitShow · 12/04/2021 17:44

@namechange202086 Thanks, darl. I’m staying overnight as I don’t have anyone at home and they weren’t happy about that. Feels nice to know I have people on hand anyway.

My nose is starting to itch on one side - and obviously I can’t get to it. So that’s going to be fun. 😂 I also perpetually feel like I’m going to sneeze.

BasinHaircut · 12/04/2021 19:02

Glad you are out of surgery and ok @ABitOfAShitShow just make sure you feel ready before you try and stand up, and have a nurse there with you when you do. Glad you are staying overnight too, really wouldn’t have done well on my own after mine but felt well enough the day after.

Is your nose packed? The dry mouth is real.

No bruising left at all @namechange202086. Still plenty of swelling though.

ABitOfAShitShow · 12/04/2021 19:27

@BasinHaircut I’ve been up and about for hours. I’m used to feeling groggy and crap so maybe that serves me here.😂

I’ve got so much pain in my throat. It’s really awful. And not at all what I expected to be the hardest thing! It feels like a bad dose of tonsillitis. Hopefully it’ll improve quickly!

misscockerspaniel · 12/04/2021 20:07

BasinHaircut The swelling takes about a year to go totally but you will notice changes every day (even if no one else does). (The thicker the skin, the longer it takes). I had mine done almost 4 years ago and my only regret is that I waited so long.

BasinHaircut · 13/04/2021 07:42

@ABitOfAShitShow you are made of stronger stuff than me! I was a bit of a snowflake when it came to the anaesthesia Grin

The first 2 days were the worst in tents of comfort so hopefully you’ll feel much better soon. Do you have much bruising yet?

@misscockerspaniel thanks. How long did it take for your columella to look normal. At the moment I look a bit like one of the Hoo’s from the grinch at the moment, especially when I smile.

ABitOfAShitShow · 13/04/2021 07:55

@BasinHaircut Morning! I have barely slept even with sleeping meds (i can only sleep flat and on my side and have terrible insomnia) and my throat still hurts so feeling a tad rougher today. I’ve also got a lovely shiner on my right eye! Grin

ABitOfAShitShow · 13/04/2021 07:56

@BasinHaircut So jealous of how far along you are in the healing process!

BasinHaircut · 13/04/2021 08:51

I’m only 2.5 weeks ahead of you @ABitOfAShitShow so you will be here soon! Honestly the first 2 days are the worst. I’d say by day 3/4 you will look the worst you are going to look, then it just gets better so rapidly.

Another piece of advice I would give based on my experience so far is to try and prepare yourself for how you will look. It’s so bizarre to see a different reflection in the mirror to the one you are so familiar with and I’m not used to it yet!

ABitOfAShitShow · 13/04/2021 09:45

@BasinHaircut I know - I just wanna be done! Haha!

I bet it’s weird. Not sure if you CAN prepare, to be honest. How exciting for us both though!
