Considering Rhinoplasty

sah168 · 17/02/2021 11:59

So I had a consultation yesterday for Rhinoplasty - I've wanted a nose job since I was 15 and at the age of 31 I am now in a position where I am able to afford one. I previously had filler in my nose which fixed my side profile, but it obviously did not really do much to narrow my wide nose which is my main area of concern.

I keep going back and forth with my decision on whether to go ahead - the surgeon I saw was great, very realistic in terms of a results and he also uses the Ultrasonic technique as opposed to the 'hammer and chisel' technique, which apparently means less bruising and a quicker recovery.

I've watched so many nose job vlogs so I feel like I sort of know what to expect in the recovery process, but a few have mentioned other side effects that worry me such as hair loss after the surgery (although temporary), spider veins becoming visible on the nose & trouble breathing.

I am also very aware that there is a 10% chance with this surgery that a revision might be needed, regardless of how skilled the surgeon is.

I would love to hear from anyone that's had it done - both good and bad experiences - particularly if you've had the Ultrasonic rhinoplasty! Aware everyone's experience is different, but I find comfort in speaking to other people who have gone through with it!

How are you feeling today @BasinHaircut ?

Pipsydodo · 30/03/2021 13:02

@BasinHaircut I hope your swelling isn't too bad today (as you say, day 3 and 4 are meant to be the worst!).

GreenSwanBlack · 30/03/2021 13:07

I take my hats off to you all

I had an accident and completely smashed my nose and had to have it rebuilt - my god it was painful! I found it worse than childbirth!

GreenSwanBlack · 30/03/2021 13:09

how does the ultrasonic one work? Can it reshape bone? it sounds amazing

ABitOfAShitShow · 30/03/2021 13:17

Joining in, if I may! I have mine booked for 12th. I was supposed to be a day case but I think I might stay in as I live alone and I've just received a letter that says I should have someone around for 24 hours.

I'm having open with the piezo technique (?). Can't wait.

BasinHaircut · 30/03/2021 17:24

Hi all, not too bad today. Swelling rounds my eyes is better than yesterday but my lips and cheeks are huge today. My head actually looks square!

I’m hoping today is the worst day swelling-wise.

DH had to help me wash my hair today as it was very matted with blood from the surgery. Top tip - I gently combed through some conditioner first, then rinsed and then shampoo’ed. I just knelt in the bath with a towel rolled up like a sausage round my face and tipped my head back, and DH used a plastic cup to tip water over me. All very sophisticated Grin.

@ABitOfAShitShow if you can I’d say deffo make sure you have someone there that first and maybe second night too. And someone on hand you can call round for duties such as hair washing and anything you have to bend down for. Try and think of things you can re-site to make life easier if you are living on your own. I don’t think I could get a new loo roll out due to where we store them right now so if DH wasn’t here I’d have needed to put them somewhere easier to get to otherwise it would have been a grim week!

Eating is really annoying. If anyone tells you you will be able to eat ok do not believe them! You need really soft foods! And nothing chewy.

Tried to eat a Soreen bar - nope! Packet of crisps - nope!

I napped all afternoon today too. Despite getting really good sleep at night I am still knackered!

@GreenSwanBlack I’ve no idea how it works but it’s apparently more precise? Or something.....

ABitOfAShitShow · 30/03/2021 17:36

@BasinHaircut Thanks, Basin! I’ll try to stay in overnight and make sure everything is prepped for coming home. Smile

Pipsydodo · 30/03/2021 18:24

@ABitOfAShitShow Piezo is what quite a few surgeons are doing now - it's meant to be more refined and lead to less post-op bruising.
This is copied and pasted from a surgeon's website:
A piezo rhinoplasty is simply the technical name for an ultrasonic rhinoplasty. This is a new form of rhinoplasty which avoids a hammer and chisel technique to reshape the nasal bones.

@ABitOfAShitShow thanks for the update- certainly sounds glamourous 🤣. I was thinking how I'll have to get others to do 'low down' things - we have rabbits outside and to feed them I'm always ducking down to get inside their run so I'll have to get my kids to do all that!
I was hoping dry shampoo would be good enough in the week after surgery but I suppose that's not much good for dry blood?

ABitOfAShitShow · 30/03/2021 18:28

@Pipsydodo Oh God. I hadn’t contemplated the hair situation. And I have hair that needs washing every day. Confused

bimbimbap · 30/03/2021 18:38

i’m booked in for 6 june in london, having had a zoom and in-person consultation recently. need to arrange mrsa and covid screening before i go in - if i’m a carrier for the former they’ll give antibiotics to suppress it before & after surgery, and i’m not too worried about testing positive for the latter because i’ve officially had it already so hopefully still immune!

i’ve got a week booked off work & surgery is on a sunday so 7 full days before i have to see anyone (and it’ll be online so hoping lighting / makeup can hide any leftover bruising)

bimbimbap · 30/03/2021 18:41

thinking of booking a hotel close to the clinic for the first couple nights until i get the packing out, so it’s easier to get there & back and won’t have to suffer an hour in an uber to get home after surgery (being done as a day case).

someone mentioned sickness after anaesthetic and that’s something i was worried about. my surgeon said they always give anti-emetic with the anaesthetic but can give more if needed / requested.

Pipsydodo · 30/03/2021 18:56

@bimbimbap and @ABitOfAShitShow which surgeon is doing yours?

I work in operating theatres and can confirm that the anaesthetist will always give you drugs that help with sickness. They then top them up after the surgery if necessary.

I'm a bit further behind you lot as have my first consultation tomorrow. Feeling very excited!

namechange202086 · 30/03/2021 19:56

I went ahead and booked mine too but it's not for a few months. Really excited but also terrified at the thought.

I think the self isolation days after COVID and before surgery will drag!

arandomusername · 30/03/2021 19:57

I had a septo-rhinoplasty done several years ago now. My nose was big and hideously twisted as I badly broke it when younger.

The surgery was the old hammer and chisel. The operation was very complex, so took a long time. Recovery was easier than I thought it would be. I had to sleep propped up and the worst bit was the mouth dryness.

Some people couldn't tell the difference and I wasn't reminding them with photos, but I can now breathe through both nostrils and am much happier when looking in a mirror. I look much better.

I suffered years of bullying at school including one bitch trying to measure my nose with a ruler.

My nose still has some numbness, but I would have it done again in a heartbeat.

namechange202086 · 30/03/2021 19:57

*Covid test

ABitOfAShitShow · 30/03/2021 20:32

@Pipsydodo Charles East for me!

HappyEm81 · 30/03/2021 21:02

Hi all, I'm interested in having a rhinoplasty, but haven't got a clue where to start. I live in the UK (England). How did you all go about finding the right surgeon for you? I've read that people advise to have a few consultations with different surgeons. Do you pay for the consultations?

zeddybrek · 30/03/2021 21:27

@BasinHaircut That's great you have had your op, hope you are healing well and that the swelling goes down quickly.

@Pipsydodo I had mine done with Duncan Atherton at The Cadogan Clinic. I highly recommend him. Absolutely no one has noticed it, even my parents and brother. A subtle change that makes my nose look like a better version of my pre baby nose if that makes sense! I can share before and after pics if anyone wants to PM me.

Pipsydodo · 30/03/2021 22:11

@zeddybrek before/after photos would be great! Not sure how to PM on here?
I have considered Duncan Atherton as read good things and I contacted his secretary. Next availability for consultations is July.
For now I'm waiting to see what I think of the 3 surgeons I'm seeing in the next month.

@HappyEm81 I have been told it's good to see 3 or 4 surgeons to see who you like and feel is right. They do all charge for consultations - ranging from £100 -£250 Shock
I've found all my information by trawling through the surgeon's websites and social media; there's a couple of rhinoplasty Facebook groups where a lot of people post photos and questions as well as links to their Instagram accounts. And there's a website called RealSelf.com
I'm no expert - just finding my way really and only just starting this, so the ladies on here who've had surgery are the best people to give you advice Smile

Pipsydodo · 30/03/2021 22:16

@ABitOfAShitShow Ive heard Charles East is excellect! Long waiting list though (a good sign I'm sure) and when his clinic told me the estimated cost (up to £14,000) I really wasn't sure if that'll be too much for me. Would you mind saying how much you paid?

ABitOfAShitShow · 30/03/2021 22:24

@Pipsydodo Just a bit less than that. He does have a big list - largely because of covid though. It would be shorter usually.

Passthebubbly · 30/03/2021 23:05

Honest to God 3 years on now the best thing I ever done. I have a diary of photos am happy to send you in you want to pm me.

Honestly. It hurts after but nothing pain meds can’t deal with. I took a really bad infection on my nose due to the splint that was put on after surgery which meant it had to come off 5 days early. My nose is so much better than it was but still not my dream nose as there is a limit to what they can do before it starts affecting your breathing. I am so much more confident now in how it looks. Mine had been bashed up due to being run over as as child and it too me to age 42 to have the rhinoplasty. No regrets but be realistic with your expectations of what can be achieved x

Passthebubbly · 30/03/2021 23:06

And I paid £4800 in Scotland

BasinHaircut · 31/03/2021 07:11

@HappyEm81 to be honest I used a surgeon that a friend of mine found (after lots of research) for her daughter’s rhinoplasty. The daughter never ended up getting it done as she changed her mind at the last minute but I used that as a starting point and went for a consultation. I went into that consultation not totally sure I would even go ahead at all with the procedure but I came out of it 100% sure that I would and that she would be my surgeon too.

She spent ages explaining everything to me, showed me loads of precious cases photos. answered my list of about 30 questions enthusiastically and I was there for over an hour. She even pointed me in the direction of previous patients who had written blogs about their experience, and I contacted one of them via social media who absolutely gushed about her.

I probably should have seen at least one other person but she gets good ratings on real self too so I just went for it.

I’ll get to see my nose for the first time on Saturday but I have already been warned not to expect too much at that point!

@Passthebubbly that is so great. I’m getting it done at 38 after breaking it as a child. I think the realistic thing is important. I still want to look like me. My nose was (is?) on the larger side and I don’t necessarily want it smaller, just straighter and I’ve had the bridge narrowed slightly. I want people to think I maybe look different because I’ve had my hair done or got new glasses or something. Or they just haven’t seen me for a year! A better version of ‘my’ nose if that makes sense.
