Considering Rhinoplasty

So I had a consultation yesterday for Rhinoplasty - I've wanted a nose job since I was 15 and at the age of 31 I am now in a position where I am able to afford one. I previously had filler in my nose which fixed my side profile, but it obviously did not really do much to narrow my wide nose which is my main area of concern.

I keep going back and forth with my decision on whether to go ahead - the surgeon I saw was great, very realistic in terms of a results and he also uses the Ultrasonic technique as opposed to the 'hammer and chisel' technique, which apparently means less bruising and a quicker recovery.

I've watched so many nose job vlogs so I feel like I sort of know what to expect in the recovery process, but a few have mentioned other side effects that worry me such as hair loss after the surgery (although temporary), spider veins becoming visible on the nose & trouble breathing.

I am also very aware that there is a 10% chance with this surgery that a revision might be needed, regardless of how skilled the surgeon is.

I would love to hear from anyone that's had it done - both good and bad experiences - particularly if you've had the Ultrasonic rhinoplasty! Aware everyone's experience is different, but I find comfort in speaking to other people who have gone through with it!

I’m dreading the sneezing as I sneeze a lot! I’m assuming I’m not going to be able to use my allergy spray for a good while.

Can’t believe I’ve only got 6 days to go!

PuppyDogEyes13 · 21/03/2021 18:00

Do you mind me asking how much you’re paying for the procedure? Am jealous - hate my nose...

BasinHaircut · 21/03/2021 18:13

@PuppyDogEyes13 mine is £6k.

Not travelling to work for the past year is pretty much paying for it, shocking as that sounds!

PuppyDogEyes13 · 21/03/2021 19:54

Thanks - food for thought!

sah168 · 22/03/2021 15:31

Good tips @zeddybrek thank you! How long was it until you could breathe through your nose again?

I didn't even think about the toothbrushing thing - I'm getting Invisalign next week so bit worried about the added pain of having to try and remove my retainers if I can barely open my mouth - but it's all self inflicted so I'll just have to get on with it I guess Grin

@BasinHaircut I'm with you on the not commuting / saving money - it has really helped in being able to afford this! Are you getting yours done in London? Yours is £3k cheaper than mine!

OP posts:
BasinHaircut · 22/03/2021 17:31

@sah168 I’m in Essex so shocked that mine is cheaper. I thought it would be London prices.

Did you go through a company or find your surgeon independently? Maybe that makes a difference?

sah168 · 22/03/2021 19:49

@BasinHaircut independent - I looked on Real Self for rhinoplasty surgeons and he was rated highly. What about you?

OP posts:
BasinHaircut · 22/03/2021 20:16

Yes independent too. Can’t believe the difference in price. Hope that’s not bad news for me Grin

sah168 · 23/03/2021 12:11

@BasinHaircut I'm sure you'll be absolutely fine, it could be the hospital fees / the actual work we're having done that causes the difference in price Smile - can't wait to hear how it goes!!!

News just in - my husband has had to go for a covid test this morning so at the moment I’m not even sure it’s going to go ahead as scheduled.

My covid test is tomorrow but I had to call the hospital this morning and let them know about DH and get advice. I’m waiting for them to call me back.

I’m sure he is fine and it’s just an asthma cough, but until we get the result I’m not even sure they are going to let me in the hospital to have my test.

Pipsydodo · 23/03/2021 16:23

Would those of you who have had the surgery recently (@zeddybrek) and booked to have it soon (@BasinHaircut, @sah168) mind telling me which surgeon you went to/are booked with?
I'm planning to have rhinoplasty and have consultations booked with 2 surgeons in London but have been advised that I should really see a few to help decide who I'd like. I definitely would like to have it done in UK and it is hard to filter through all the reviews the surgeons have!

BasinHaircut · 23/03/2021 17:57

@Pipsydodo I have PM’ed you.

I haven’t had the procedure yet but will report back!

namechange202086 · 23/03/2021 18:38

Is everyone having the consultations face to face at the moment? I have mine next week but it's on Zoom because they weren't doing face to face. I'm in Scotland so perhaps different rules.

BasinHaircut · 23/03/2021 18:50

Yes mine was face to face, I think it was October last year. I’m not sure I’d be comfortable with a zoom consultation for this type of procedure. Wouldn’t want the first time the surgeon had seen my nose to be surgery day....

Pipsydodo · 23/03/2021 21:54

Thanks

Pipsydodo · 23/03/2021 21:58

@namechange202086 I have booked 2 face to face consultations in April. A couple of other surgeons I've contacted said their initial consultations would be via video and then the second one in person.
I would prefer to see them for a consultation. (And for them to see my nose close up 🤥)

BasinHaircut · 27/03/2021 20:16

Had my rhinoplasty this afternoon. Now the anaesthesia has mostly worn off I’m feeling super bored so thought I’d post on here in case anyone had any questions! Keep me occupied!

Pipsydodo · 28/03/2021 07:41

@BasinHaircut how exciting! Are you feeling okay? Keep us posted with how you're getting on Smile

BasinHaircut · 28/03/2021 08:36

Well, shortly after I posted last night I passed out on the toilet! My blood pressure went super low. Was a bit of a rough night. I don’t think I had a great time with the anaesthesia but this morning I’m feeling much better.

I am in absolutely no pain, although I am still bleeding from my nose. My nose is packed and so whilst not painful is very uncomfortable (very dry mouth and throat) but I believe the packing is coming out today. The surgeon and also one of the theatre nurses said to me last night that they think I will be very pleased with the result but I can’t see anything yet obviously. I did have to lay flat for quite some time last night due to my blood pressure and you are supposed to stay upright so wondering if I’ll get extra swelling or bruising.

I’ve managed to eat but it slow and hard work! Drinking is ok once you work out how much you are able to move your lips!

Pipsydodo · 28/03/2021 09:24

Oh you poor thing! I had really low BP after an anaesthetic a few years ago and exactly the same thing happened (passed out when I went to the toilet).
Were you booked to be an overnight patient anyway? I've seen quite a few people saying they were sent home same day after rhinoplasty but think I'd want to stay in so I've got medical help nearby if needed.

I've heard that the packed/stuffy nose is the worst part of this. Hope you get a good rest today x

namechange202086 · 28/03/2021 10:27

Hope rest of your recovery goes well! Did they give you strong painkillers to take home?

sah168 · 28/03/2021 12:42

@BasinHaircut hope you’re feeling better today. Did you stay the night at the hospital or were you a day case?

OP posts:
BasinHaircut · 28/03/2021 14:29

Yes I was booked to stay and I agree I don’t think I’d have wanted to be going home same day. I’ve literally only just had my last lot of IV antibiotics anyway and I’ve had some other IV thing to help with blood clotting and loads of fluids.

Packing is out and I could breathe for a while but the swelling has increased now and I’m fully blocked up again.

I think I’m getting painkillers to take home yes but so far I’ve only had paracetamol and I’m not in pain at all.

I do feel a lot more banged up that I thought I was going to though to be fair. Not just in the face but even though I’ve had anaesthesia before, only for short procedures and this one was about 3 hours and has got me feeling quite crappy! So what I’d say so far is that it doesn’t hurt but expect to feel like shit and have to take it VERY easy.

I’m going home soon and looking forward to being in my own environment.

sah168 · 29/03/2021 09:52

@BasinHaircut how are you feeling today - have you been able to get much sleep?

Also out of curiosity, did the anesthesia make you feel nauseous? I've heard that can be quite common.

OP posts:
BasinHaircut · 29/03/2021 11:02

I actually slept pretty well last night. I was exhausted as I don’t think I sleep in more than 10 minute blocks on Saturday night. I nodded off at 7pm and although I was a up a few times in the night I slept til 7am!

The swelling is much worse today and my eyes are not fully open, but I still don’t really have any pain although I’d say I’m more ‘aware’ of it all today. There is a bit more pressure but it’s really not that bad. Google tells me day 3 (tomorrow?) might be the worst swelling and bruising-wise.

No nausea at all except for those few seconds before I passed out on Saturday night.

I’ve got cocodamol, ibuprofen, omeprazol and antibiotics, plus arnica that I’m now on for the next few days/week and I will be taking them religiously to ensure I stay comfortable.
