New thread. Let’s get the vanilla away, lockdown done, and the citrus and coconut out.

Oh boo @Mrs08 - will he get another date fairly quickly?

SOTD BDK Pas ce soir. Too sweet and floral for me - I should know better than to go for anything not regarded as unisex. There is an intriguing black pepper and ginger hum that would work better with less white florals.

MrsRLynde · 13/07/2021 21:51

@StellaAndCrow

Hello, I'm new to this thread, thank you all for all the inspiration! I'm so excited about the new perfume book coming out. I'm old so grew up pre-perfume books, and used to get excited about reading the Boots Christmas Fragrance leaflet and the Cosmetics to Go catalogue!
Welcome. If you enjoyed Cosmetics to Go then do beat a path to 4160 Tuesdays - recall Sarah McCartney used to write their copy.

SotD is Floris No.89 which smells on opening like a rather wonderful mixture of Jicky and Habit Rouge, with the bonus that the big lemony note hasn't curdled. The powdery heart reminds me of something else, possibly a distant nip of Tabu (but more refined)? Very enjoyable, but doesn't stick around.

TattiePants · 14/07/2021 16:47

SOTD is Byredo Mojave Ghost. It's the first of my samples that I would buy a fb of. So far I've tried 4 4160 Tuesday samples and they're not for me.

wheresmymojo · 14/07/2021 20:56

SOTD: Shay & Blue White Peaches sample.

Lovely scent for a summer day....like most perfumes on me it didn't last long at all. Would consider a FB though.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 14/07/2021 22:25

SOTD MG Lemon.

SOTD escentric 03. Still allergygy but this seemed to cut through

MissBattleaxe · 15/07/2021 16:18

@MrsRLynde what a fantastic description! Thank you! I really want to try that now.

Mrs08 · 15/07/2021 19:20

Had a massage today so currently smell of Moroccan rose oil

MrsRLynde · 15/07/2021 20:15

You're very kind, MissB. I hadn't really dabbled at all with Floris scents previously, but 4 x15mls for £28 was too good an opportunity to pass up. (I wear a lot of 'masculines' - although even typing that makes me resent these bizarre gendered norms for combinations of molecules).

So far the Floris's are up absolutely up my street as they have a very classic, old school feel, featuring a lot of moss Grin. They are also quite soft and refined and by another house would be marketed as unisex.

Today it's Elite - Fragrantica has this down as a woody aromatic, but it seems to me to be a delicate, slightly soapy, leather chypre? I need to dig out my Diorling and my Empreinte and compare. In common with Yatagan it's got a (very light) note of fir and (a hint) of musk. But if Yatagan is a strong sword, this is a delicate fencing foil.

I like this, and No.89, a lot and it's nice to be able to spray them with a heavier hander than you would use with precious vintage bottles. A heavy hand is needed as they do fade quite fast.

FragrantlyScent · 16/07/2021 14:03

I hope you don't mind, but I've enjoyed reading quite a few of these wonderful threads, and you all seem so friendly I thought I'd de-lurk and say hello (waves). Since being here, I've been introduced me to so many new fragrances I'd love to try, I can see this becoming very expensive! I like Ambers and spicy scents (I don't really like to say 'Oriental', it sounds so colonial, but can't really think of a well understood alternative), chypres and fougeres, and don't really care if its advertised for men or women, as I don't agree with gendered perfume advertising.
SOTD Ambre Sultan by Serge Lutens, a favourite. I find it has great longevity (indeed I can smell it on scarves and coats days later), but the sillage could be better. I love how rich and powdery this is.

FragrantlyScent · 16/07/2021 16:02

Well, today is just far too hot for Ambre Sultan!

Have washed that off and am now in the original Aramis. Was initially going for Aramis Devin as I wanted a blast of medicinal greenness, (supposedly a lighter version of Estée Lauder Aliage) but haven't worn original Aramis for years so plumped for that instead. I don't actually get its manly reputation, to me it smells like a spicy citrus cologne, prefect for summer! Occasionally get hints of leather and woods, but otherwise find it quite refreshing and cleansing. Makes me think of a monastery garden, somewhere in the sunny Mediterranean or on the Amalfi coast, with the breeze gently blowing in the scent of herbs, while a slightly churchy smell is released from the open Chapel doors. (I hope that makes sense, I'm not as experienced or as good at describing fragrances as some of you!)

MrsRLynde · 16/07/2021 16:28

Welcome Fragrantly, you sound like an old hand Smile, I want to smell some Aramis now...

Mrs08 · 16/07/2021 16:36

Welcome fragrantly 👋
I think we share a love of ambers and Orientals 💜
Ambre sultan is gorgeous. If you fancy a cheap punt then avon timeless is a beautiful ambery chypre for £5 😀
LOVE aramis. Haven't smelt it in a long time...
Sotd avon Oud Grandeur.
I'm VERY hot and fed up. 32 degrees on Sunday allegedly 😫
Been to cinema today for the first time in 18 months. Was lovely and there were only about 8 other people in the auditorium so it felt pretty safe.

FragrantlyScent · 16/07/2021 17:23

Aramis is great MrsR. I find the summer heat helps open up the scent, so you get a fuller expression of the notes than you would in the cold, if that makes sense. It doesn't smell quite the same in the winter to me.

Love Amber Sultan Mrs08, today was just the wrong day for it. Also love Avon for everyday scents you can wear anywhere safely. (though that doesn't mean I don't wear Obsession/Youth Dew to the dentist or hospital sometimes Blush) Will check out Timeless. A family member used Avon Far Away for years. Bit too floral for me though. Shock at 32 degrees!

Mrs08 · 16/07/2021 17:53

Yeah
Not a fan of far away either although it's their bestseller I belive?
I really rate avon oud Grandeur and ambre Ardent too.
Obsession is one of my all time faves. I got a bottle for my 18th and it was love at first sniff 😀
Youth dew is also lush. I adore EL knowing though. Its such a grown up scent.
I think i might have to break out the avon lbd weekend and 4160 fluffy lemon top for this weekend

FragrantlyScent · 16/07/2021 18:13

Mrs08 I agree, the classic Estée Lauders always make me feel grown up and well groomed.

I love that Estée Lauder signature smell, the 'DNA' that runs through youth dew, cinnabar, knowing, some of the Aramis ones, and Clinique Aromatics (which is another favourite, only for special occasions though).

To me, Obsession smells very Christmassy, so I only wear it in November and December. Ditto Cinnabar. I always look forward to bringing them out, as then I know Christmas is really coming. Grin

I got the original eau sauvage in edp format for my birthday (not the nasty modern blue one, sorry to those of you who like itBlush), so I'll be in that this weekend.

Mrs08 · 16/07/2021 18:23

Oh don't get me started on reformulations!
I could weep at what they have done to obsession and opium 😫

FragrantlyScent · 16/07/2021 18:43

Have read good things about the Perfume Parlour dupe of Opium being very similar to the original 70s version, but can't say if this is true.

Actually don't know very much about dupes generally and haven't tried any yet. Are Perfume Parlour any good?

MrsRLynde · 16/07/2021 18:59

Are you me, Fragrantly? Original Eau Sauvage is fabulous (what else to expect from a Roudnitska)?

With you completely on Obsession, Mrs08, haven't sniffed recent formulation Opium - at least there are stacks of old bottles on eBay.

Mrs08 · 16/07/2021 19:03

The pp dupe is a very good dupe of the original opium

MrsRLynde · 16/07/2021 19:05

SotD has been MH Tender. I put a summer frock on for first time since 2019 and strode out or a posh outdoor breakfast. I like Tender - it smells familiar and unconventional all at once. Tulip, saffron and ink.

FragrantlyScent · 16/07/2021 19:30

Oooh! I got the eau sauvage for my birthday a couple of weeks ago. I haven't smelled it for a few years (and even then it was only a small sample), so hope it's as good as I remember. Am waiting very patiently for tomorrow. Halo

Posh breakfast sounds great MrsR, I haven't been out to eat for ages, but will definitely wear my most flamboyant fragrance when I do (eventually) go for a meal. Even a trip to a cafe sounds exciting to me atm. Smile

I haven't smelled the pre-reformulation obsession, the current one is all I know, and I love it! . I wouldn't want to smell the original, as it would sort of spoil this one for me iyswim.

I do know and love original opium and youth dew, and agree completely that the current formulation is nothing like the original, particularly in the case of youth dew. (sigh)

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 16/07/2021 21:14

SOTD Heeley Sel Marin.

I hit the button on a FB of YSL Libre today. Boots has 15% off selected fragrances and then I get 10% student discount, so it was a bargain. Annoyingly the 15% is only online, so the sales assistant had to order it for me to collect to get the offer, despite literally having it in her hand at the time.

OneNightTimeMenaceStrikesBack · 17/07/2021 00:24

SOTN is a cheapie i picked up today Anna Sui - L'Amour Rose Versailles. fragrantica has this down as a cheapo fruity floral with barely any rose but on me it smells like really expensive powdery soap and roses! wonder why im not picking up any fruit at all?! anyway, it was £9.99 in tkmaxx this afternoon and definitely worth that much and as a bonus the bottle is very pretty :)

EvelynBeatrice · 17/07/2021 08:23

Yesterday my Nuxe Le Matin de Possibles (Nuxe perfumes on offer at the moment) arrived in time for me to apply it liberally before going out shopping in the heat. Not as lemony as I remember- has a bit more mandarin - but light and pleasant with amber note and just right for sunny days. I’m still hankering a bit though for the lemony gorgeousness of Dior Homme Cologne which is my absolute favourite for the summer , but it lasts so poorly.

I have to say amongst all the other pandemic worries, one of the things that I would really hate is losing my sense of smell!!
