New thread. Let’s get the vanilla away, lockdown done, and the citrus and coconut out.

SOTD MMM Untitled (I’m about 95% sure, it is a sample whose label has worn off). Too fresh and light a woody fragrance for me though I remember really liking it at first.

Waiting on (late) school place allocation next week - bit borderline as our home is well within the catchment but we are waiting on baliffs to evict our tenant who has been blanking us for over 6 months and not paying rent for much longer.

I tried out various perfumes in store perfume hall last week and tucked the perfumed cards in my handbag - I absolutely love one of them, but yes, as you might have predicted, I can’t remember which is which ... I think my favourite on the day was Cartier Baiser Volle which Fragrantica is rather rude about. I also tried ‘ Not a perfume’ which I also liked, but I don’t remember loving anything.

Fferny1 · 09/07/2021 20:57

Welcome @TattiePants. I love your style 😄.32 samples is an excellent haul to start with.

Sotd is Hermes Pamplemousse Rose.
It's so muggy here and I can't sleep properly at night. The only perfume shopping I've done was for dd and some candles. She loves Grapefruit and really liked the M&S Grapefruit & Ginger Candle plus a couple from Tk Maxx. One is Lilac flowers and the other is Cherry blossom scented. I was allowed to keep the redundant ones as she said they smelt synthetic 🤦🏼‍♀️.
Maybe she is a Perfumista in the making.

Hi, I hope you don't mind me bumping in to ask a question please? There is a perfume I really want to try but I have no idea how to go about it (I've been nursing one bottle of gift perfume for 8 years and I'm halfway through). I have ASD and perfume counters are a total overwhelming nightmare for me (I hold my breath and get past them as quickly as possible) so I have no idea what I'm doing and would like to know so I can get in there and get out quickly and also memorize how it works so if I get overwhelmed I still have a chance at success. Or you might tell me that I can order samples online, which would be amazing!

The perfume is portrait of a lady. It's too expensive to just buy a bottle and see. My questions are: how do I find out which shops sell it that I can smell it in (eg Google suggests Boots but I don't think you can smell them there?); once I've found a shop how does it work? Is there likely to be a bottle I can spray on me or do I need to find someone and ask? What do I ask for?

Flowers for any help you can provide.

Hello @AdventureIsWaiting. I got a sample of POAL (as you will see it referred to on here!) from Les Senteurs website. They will do up to three samples I think for about a fiver each. Ebay is also good for samples. Then you can try them without leaving the house.

Alternatively Les Senteurs have got an actual shop in west London I think. It’s so long since I went near an actual shop I don’t know where else stocks it but others might.

I haven’t been on here for a while as had terrible hay fever and can’t smell anything. I probably honk to others. Going to give Molecule 1 + patchouli another whirl today.

AdventureIsWaiting · 10/07/2021 09:56

@PearsMorgan Thank you very much! I will order the samples.

TattiePants · 10/07/2021 10:03

@AdventureIsWaiting I order a sample of POAL a few days ago (along with a few others) from Fragrance Samples Uk. I think it was about £5 for a 1ml sample but you can also get larger samples (up to 10ml I think). I’m hoping it arrives today or Monday as I can’t wait to try.

TattiePants · 10/07/2021 10:09

@Fferny1 Pamplemousse Rose sounds divine - that might have to be sample number 33!

The first of my samples arrived today; I bet you can guess where they’re from. It’s my son’s last day of isolation today so we’re stuck at home doing jobs in the garden. What perfume to wear to paint a fence between rain showers?

Hi Tattiepants...I think we're probably at a similar stage!

I read an old perfume thread on here the other day that recommended reading Perfumes: A - Z Guide by Luca Turin and Tania Sanchez which sounds like a great way of diving in alongside samples (I have put it on my birthday list).

SOTD yesterday was sample of Byredo's Bal D'Afrique.

I LOVE it.

It's got so many different notes...very complex and intriguing to my very new perfume nose. I'm finding it interesting to read about the notes on Fragrantica while testing, I can only really identify the main two or three notes at the moment.

Major disappointment is that it doesn't last long on my skin which I'm devastated about as otherwise I love it enough to buy a FB.

SOTD today is Flowerhead by Byredo.

It's like being smacked in the face by a florist shop. Hard.

I have definitely realised white florals are not for me.

Of course though...the one I like least has enormous sillage and lasting power.

Will be selling the rest of this sampler as only had one spray and it's still smacking me around the chops two hours later.

wheresmymojo · 10/07/2021 14:57

I feel like this may be sacrilege but I had a tester pack of 4160 a year ago and didn't like the ones I tried...

Can't remember where I put them, will dig them out again as not sure I actually tried them all and I'll give them another go.

Perhaps I accidentally chose the wrong ones for me...

I like the sound of The Dark Heart of Old Havana - I like tobaccos, musk, leather, etc.

Also on my birthday list is a FB of Cartier La Panthere, another Perfume Society Niche Discovery Box, several candles and one of the M&S EDT's which I like for (very) cheap everyday. I won't get it all but hopeful for some Smile

wheresmymojo · 10/07/2021 15:16

Has anyone joined the 4160 patreon?

I'm thinking of doing the £10 or £20 a month...I'm too lazy to type out the details so screenshot below...

First pic = £10 pm
Second pic = £20 pm

Oooh, will take a look. Always happy to support a MNetter.

My sample of Baccarat Rouge 540 just arrived.

I honestly can't quite get my head around it yet.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 10/07/2021 23:35

SOTD YSL Libre. I was given a few samples of this and really like it.

Gosh, that’s super-exciting, missbattleaxe!

@MissBattleaxe

This may get deleted but of you want a good perfume book, then check out The Perfume Companion, due out on Sept 21st. Me and Sarah McCartney wrote it.
Already pre ordered:) Can't wait! :)

I did. I cancelled it after a while as I didn't like any of the scents sadly
FloraMacDonald · 12/07/2021 12:54

Ambre Russe today. Love this!
I might sell my Complicated Shadows. It really doesn't do anything for me.

StellaAndCrow · 12/07/2021 13:58

Hello, I'm new to this thread, thank you all for all the inspiration! I'm so excited about the new perfume book coming out. I'm old so grew up pre-perfume books, and used to get excited about reading the Boots Christmas Fragrance leaflet and the Cosmetics to Go catalogue!

StellaAndCrow · 12/07/2021 14:04

And my SsOTD - Molecule 01 and Acqua di Parma Yuzu.

StellaAndCrow · 12/07/2021 14:09

AdventureIsWaiting you can get Portrait of a Lady samples directly from the Frederic Malle website - you can choose 3 samples for £15. A good thing about Frederic Malle is that they sell small travel sizes of their perfumes - around £30 for 10 ml travel spray, and they come nicely packaged.

I like Angelique Sous La Pluie and Eau de Hiver. And En Passant, which is a lovely lilac, but I'd like it as a candle rather than on myself I think!

If any of you hear of how to get a sample of alien goddess let me know!!

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 12/07/2021 22:35

SOTD Diptyque Philosykos. My hay fever is so bad and this seemed to make it worse!
