Canada Goose - too hot for London?

londonmummy1234 · 04/02/2021 22:01

I brought myself a Canada Goose Mystique Parka... it was pricey at £1100 but apparently lasts forever blah blah.
It arrived today and it feels really hot and heavy to wear but all the other mums in London seem to be wearing CG?!
What's people's experiences with it and if too hot can they offer an alternative?
Looking for a long coat and padded! Thanks

I have one and feel the same. I can only wear it when it's absolutely baltic not when running errands or only if it's cold and I have to be outside all day. I never wear it when I'm shopping as I get too hot in it and it's large to carry around. It's nice when you need it but not really for everyday use.

Rocket3000 · 06/02/2021 02:05

It's -33 where I am right now (not the UK) and I know nothing about fashion but I wear a North Face thermoball jacket with a fleece layer underneath and I can be outside with no issues. DH swears by Arcteryx which is more expensive but I have never heard him say he is cold (although perhaps that's his way of justifying the price!).
We both wear fleece layers underneath in these temperatures but they are fine by themselves in the UK winter temperatures.

theyosherman · 06/02/2021 04:29

@Rocket3000 Arcteryx is top performance gear. I love it too

Roastednotsalt · 06/02/2021 06:36

@nevernotstruggling

CG is 100% drug dealer down here in Devon too. That's hilarious that they are a thing in london.

I get the appeal of a luxury coat don't get me wrong but for that £ you could buy something really stylish and amazing. Those CG coats are none of those things.

I didn’t know CG was associated with animal cruelty because I have never even stopped to look in a shop that sells them.

I would say several brands fit the stereotype of Drug dealers it’s all over. Moncler isn’t much better either and I’m in the North.

Nitflux · 06/02/2021 06:44

I would imagine far too hot for London. I live in Chicago where it is currently -12c; Canada Goose is perfect for here and you see it a lot, but too
much for London.

eaglejulesk · 06/02/2021 07:05

I'm not understanding the issue some people have with wool? A sheep that isn't shorn will suffer and the sheep aren't bred for wool it is just a by product.

Thank you @snowliving - I was just about to say the same Confused

londonmummy1234 · 06/02/2021 07:21

Well I'm just glad I sent them both back. Think I'm going to go for a Max Mara. They look much lighter and are more suited to my lifestyle. Don't really know what I was thinking ordering the CG. I think I just spent too long outside standing in the damp with it being lockdown but hopefully that won't last forever!

londonmummy1234 · 06/02/2021 07:24

Also didn't know about the protests etc outside the London store. Am a bit mortified I ordered them now.
Also I am honestly surprised by people wearing them in London. I tried it on and walked around my bedroom and I felt so constricted, it was so thick and puffy and I think I'd just feel claustrophobic. I don't understand how they are so popular amongst mums where I live. I can assure you they are not drug dealing types either!

Uniqlo use slaves so are hardly the ethical choice:

LadyWithLapdog · 06/02/2021 07:33

@londonmummy1234 well done for changing it. Enjoy your new coat.

turnthebiglightoff · 06/02/2021 07:36

100% drug dealer. Also, why not just say Fulham? Hmm Also, bought.

LadyWithLapdog · 06/02/2021 07:36

@lojojomo I think people were objecting to animal cruelty with CG. I wish we’d all stop and think before our purchases to avoid spending money on exploitative products or brands.

Why are you so unfriendly?

Interesting. The thing is it's not just CG that have ethical issues so unless your really doing your research you're going to struggle to find a coat that is 100% cruelty/slavery free etc... which is rather worrying.

eaglejulesk · 06/02/2021 07:45

@LadyWithLapdog - I've seen the Peta adverts regarding wool, and tbh they don't have a clue. How many sheep have you seen being shorn? I've seen plenty, and believe me if shearers rushed and injured the sheep then they wouldn't last long! What do you think life is like for an unshorn sheep? It was 40 degrees C here one day recently, would you like to have been covered in several years worth of unshorn wool? Please don't believe everything you read.

oatmilk4breakfast · 06/02/2021 07:50

It gets hotter every year. By 2050, London’s climate is predicted to be more like Barcelona now. I don’t think it matters what other people are wearing. I would choose things you can layer easily.

LadyWithLapdog · 06/02/2021 07:51

@eaglejulesk that was the shortest article I could link to. I know PETA can be OTT. And the fact they’ve made Carrie Symonds their 2020 person of the year is highly dubious. There’s more to read on the subject, however, if people are interested. I didn’t want to link to something too lengthy.

Galliano · 06/02/2021 08:01

I have a woolrich arctic parka which I bought from Flannels in the post Xmas sale a few years ago for half price. I was actually inspired by Anna Friel wearing one in the first series of Marcella and identified what it was via a mumsnet thread at the time! I ‘m always cold and it’s made a massive difference to my willingness to go outside in winter but this is outside in the rural north. This year that’s been particularly helpful! I could wear it to go round the supermarket which I usually find quite chilly but would avoid going in and out of city centre shops in it. For suggestions of Uniqlo as alternative it’s far warmer than a Uniqlo coat which I’ve tried and not been warm enough in.

www.flannels.com/woolrich-arctic-parka-jacket-660567#colcode=66056722 flannels do seem to have the black arctic parka in stock and slightly reduced

BigGreen · 06/02/2021 08:05

I've got a brilliant parka from Patagonia. It's the stuff of magic - really toasty on cold days at the park but not faint inducing on the tube. Excellent ethical credentials including environmental plus staff treatment and a ton cheaper than CG.

eaglejulesk · 06/02/2021 08:16

@LadyWithLapdog - to be honest I didn't even read the article, but I live in a country with a lot of sheep and know people who are shearers, so I would rather trust what I know than what PETA say when it comes to wool.

LadyWithLapdog · 06/02/2021 08:22

@eaglejulesk as I said, it’s not just Peta. That was just the shortest and most obvious article. Fair enough if you don’t want to look more into it or think you know enough. Sometimes, however, we don’t want to see what’s inconvenient.

stealthbanana · 06/02/2021 08:29

Oh give over with your snide “inconvenience”. Peta are absolute loons when it comes to wool. There is absolutely no reason to avoid wearing wool, sheep can absolutely be mistreated but there is no reason they need to be to produce wool. Most non natural fibres are absolutely horrendous for the environment, and any disposable fashion that gets binned is even worse.

Buy second hand, buy brands that last and don’t buy fabrics that can’t be recycled.

huuuuunnnndderrricks · 06/02/2021 08:35

Lots of brands use ethical down or recycled down now . My Uniqlo coat is very warm .!

LadyWithLapdog · 06/02/2021 08:44

@stealthbanana you’re being very aggressive and I’m not engaging further with you.
