One look that you love and one that you loathe

Love - silk shirts with a blazer and fitted trousers/jeans. Brogues or block heels. Really dainty jewellery.

Loathe - 50s look (unless it actually is from the 50s), Irregular Choice shoes etc.

I love a plain polo neck with a statement necklace. I don't "loathe" any outfits really. Most things can look good on the right person - there are definitely looks that I can't carry off/don't really know how to style. Dungerees would be one!

Confusedandshaken · 03/02/2021 08:09

Overweight middle aged aged women (I am one) with a statement scarf draped artfully round their neck or a chunky statement necklace are my bete noir. Because I am bang in that age group and am definitely overweight as well, I often get given those things as presents. I open them, make appreciative noises and they go straight to the charity shop.

A look I love but will never be able to emulate is the willowy middle aged woman with cropped silver grey hair and red lipstick, wearing an open necked shirt and slim jeans. I have the jeans and the lipstick but they don't have quite the same panache when I wear them.

On younger women I love a long dress worn with trainers. It looks so feminine yet edgy. My DIL has a body con leopard print dress she wears like that. With any formal shoe or boot she'd look like a Bet Lynch wannabe but with trainers it looks so cool. Tea dresses worn like that look great on young women too. On me they'd be more Grandma Walton going out to collect the eggs.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 03/02/2021 08:51

I love sleek, simple elegant dresses, with nothing fussy on them. Or blazers, skinny jeans and heeled boots. Or beaded vintage look dresses/tops.

Really dislike those oversized dresses that look like they belong in a cult. Also irregular choice shoes - they are like costume shoes from Wizard of Oz.

HenriettaHeffalump · 03/02/2021 09:16

I love so many looks! At the moment, I love jeans with an oversize jumper over a collared shirt. Either straight leg jeans with a turn up and trainers or skinnies under knee high boots. Looking forward to wearing summer dresses and trainers again this Spring/Summer.

I don't like (and I'm going to sound a bit like my mother here, but this has always been not to my taste), anything very revealing / body hugging with high heels. It may be because I have never felt comfortable wearing that and I do see red carpet Hollywood stars looking GORGEOUS in these things, but I don't think it usually translates well to a cold night in Basingstoke. Some people look good in it, but it would never be my choice. Even when a skinny wee thing (ha! Can't believe I ever was), I didn't go for this hyper glam look. Maybe because I'm tall.

thebabessavedme · 03/02/2021 09:40

I love clothes and fashion, I love to see women showing individual style and flair, they may be wearing something I'm not too keen on but at least they are themselves.

I cannot bear this 'celeb look', all fake everythings and looking just like the young woman they are sat next to for the next pouty photo - it must be exhusting to have to look constantly 'sex ready', this look is for men, not for themselves.

RubyWooRed · 03/02/2021 09:47

I love all the mom jeans and tucked in t shirts / shirts , people look so effortlessly cool and casual.

I tried it and just looked frumpy and stumpy as I’m quite short.

Also hate the fake celeb look , especially the big spiders leg fake eyelashes and tight body stocking jumpsuit type outfits.
Also not a fan of the 50’s revival / irregular choice shoe combo that so many ladies seem to favour.

Nat6999 · 03/02/2021 10:02

I love anything 1940's or 1960's style, think Angel Strawbridge on Return to the Chateau, those jumpsuits she wears would look like a sack of spuds on anyone else but on her they look amazing. I love anything vintage style, there is an amazing Instagram blogger who is size 22 with big books who models for a lot of lingerie & plus size sites who does the whole big glamour thing of old film star looks & she looks better dressed than any of the pencil thin models could ever look.

Pigtailsandall · 03/02/2021 10:23

The one look I can't stand is essentially how my mum and her friends dress (sorry mum!) Which is a fitted jumper over a white shirt and ironed (ironed!) jeans and high-heel boots. Add a string of pearls and you get a look that ages everyone.

I like a grungy look, slobby, funky t-shirt with distressed jeans. Hair which makes you look like you just woke up.

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 03/02/2021 10:29

I don't think there's any look l dislike; each to their own.

I agree l like stylish older women and thank them for leading the way so we don't have to dress like Miss Marple after a certain age.

I have always admired Kate Moss' style generally (not the monkey fur coat 😬). She always looks effortlessly stylish. I'm not keen on her though.

GnTplease · 03/02/2021 10:33

I love that effortlessly cool casual look, not too try hard but put together. Distressed non skinny jeans, ankle boots, a funky knit tucked in. I just don't seem to quite be able to nail it.
I really hate the Lycra co-ords (leggings and some kind of crop top) with full makeup, lashes extensions etc that younger instagrammers seem to be pedalling - it's not gym wear, it's not going out wear, it's tacky and cheap looking.

Blondiney · 03/02/2021 10:54

I love that 70s American, Lauren Hutton, relaxed glam look.

Brogues depress me. So does Seasalt anything.

MacDuffsMuff · 03/02/2021 11:00

Agree with this whole-heartedly, it's not a look I like at all.

I also agree with the longer dress with trainers look that a lot of DD's friends like - I couldn't carry it off at all - but they all look great.

The Sloane Ranger look is making a come back, so they may be a bit more fashionable than you think soon Wink

Love: I'm a total sucker for white stuff lifestyle photos of willowy blond models on a surfy beach, casually rocking a loose knit jumper with a pair of shorts on long tanned legs. They don't look like that on my white tree trunks!

Loath: fake eyelashes / massive eye brows/ contours. Ridiculous and dated.

lazylinguist · 03/02/2021 11:32

It's a bit sad that the looks that everyone's liking are mostly followed by 'but it looks crap on me because I'm not tall, slim and willowy'. I suppose we all want what we feel is out of reach.

I too love the effortlessly casual chic looks and hate the OTT fake celeb look. I'm also not a fan of most vintage looks, especially 1950s. I rather like the smart-casual knee-length boots with skinny jeans look, but I know it's not really fashionable any more (not that I care!).

Pumpkinstace · 03/02/2021 11:53

I love this thread! I love all the looks of work and carried well.

I don't really like those woolly jumpsuits like what those 'I'm famous for getting pregnant by a footballer' girls wear. (Sorry that was catty).

I'm autistic and clothes are a sensory nightmare so I can't wear 'looks'.

I'm so jealous. My favourite is teadresses and pumps.

Pumpkinstace · 03/02/2021 11:54

That should say if worn and carried well

Absolutely not my intention, I did think about putting 'lighthearted' in the title but didn't think I needed to. I don't think saying you don't like something is offensive and I don't think anyone has been horrible on the thread? To be fair, every single thread on MN has the potential to cause offence to someone I suppose. Grin

Love
All saints black biker style jackets rock chick look

LunaNorth · 03/02/2021 12:00

Love - hippy, boho, understatedly sexy. Like Rebecca Ferguson as Rose the Hat in Dr Sleep.

Hate - not much. But if I see a grown woman in a Disney jumper I feel like taking her to one side.

Why though.? Everyone has different tastes and styles.
I hate Op's look on me. It doesn't suit me. I am sure the op isn't offended and realises we all have our own look!

Grin that's OK, I'm a big girl I can take it! I love the sound of your look too and an All Saints black biker jacket would be a dream purchase if they weren't so expensive. I look and lust over them and always talk myself out of it!

Love: A really well fitted black dress. I don’t think black is boring. It’s chic! And most women of any age, shape or size can look phenomenal in the right LBD.

Loathe: Dresses with trainers. Can’t wait for this trend to pass. I just think ‘Lily Allen circa 2007’ when I see this style. Love dresses, love trainers, but not together. Especially in the summer .

ginghamtablecloths · 03/02/2021 12:10

I love sleek body skimming dresses which are slightly fitted and hopefully elongating and slimming for those of us who aren't as slim as we once were.

I hate the 'New Look' of the 1950s which is the opposite of the above as it makes me look even shorter and fatter. A feminine silhouette perhaps but the sleeker look is more flattering IMHO.
