What instantly ages?

Whether that be clothing or cosmetics, I'm interested to hear your opinions. I have a few of my own thoughts on this, though I could be way off the mark.

Am in need of a boost and think I might be unwittingly ageing myself before my time.

Thanks.

Oh a shopping trolley. Yes that's definitely the best one yet.

MaelyssQ · 03/01/2021 17:45

I want a shopping trolley with a seat on it so I can stop for a cigaretterest on my way back up the hill from the shop.

Only 20 quid.

I'd need a new one every time I sat on it though. Grin

Tollergirl · 03/01/2021 17:50

@Woodhill - me too! I love it but know I'll be a sobbing mess by the end of it which will definitely make me look my age Smile

@DianaOfTheLakes
"The "princess diana" cut and blow dry, so beloved of my mother and her friends. Last popular in the early 90s."

Ah but she's a style icon again now with the youth - big lacy collars, oversized knits, and the hair......

NiceGerbil · 03/01/2021 17:52

Sounds awesome maelssq

Does being old age you?

That's not been covered yet.

Ismellphantoms · 03/01/2021 17:55

As an older person and looking at my friends:
Tight curly perms
Brown or black hair dye
Outdated glasses
Fringes
Droopy skirts
Old lady shoes and bags
Shopping trolley
Thick foundation
Thick blusher
Kohl eyeliner
Matte lipstick
Raincoats
Brooches
Big necklaces
Droopy breasts from ill fitting bras
Twinsets
Thick beige or tan tights

So what looks better:
Well cut hair in an up to date style
Subtle makeup
Jeans, jeggings
Dr Martens are comfortable but still look good
Fashionable coat
Trendy glasses
A good bra

Me (in my 70s)
Dr Martens boots
Subtle tattooed brows
Piercings
Shoulder length natural curls.

I've got my own slightly grungy style and it works for me.

Seems like simply existing at the age of 48 is my problem, then. That and;

Having feet. Feet need shoes. Shoes of all kinds are ageing, it seems.
Having hair - it's too long, too short, too styled, not styled enough, too flat or too fluffy.
Wearing makeup - and not wearing makeup.
Dying my hair - and not dying my hair. If it's a light colour, it's too light too young looking and therefore looks too old, if it's dark, it's too dark and too young to look anything but too old, if it's mid range, it's too boring, which is too old, if it's bright, it's too young for my age which looks too old, if it's a pastel colour, it's too young for my age, which looks simultaneously too young for me and too old for me.
Wearing clothes. They're either too young or too old. Or they're too generically middleaged.
Having a body that is not perfect either aesthetically or functionally. I might be able to do a bit about that, but the actions I take to try and get the body functioning normally have a side effect on appearance in other ways (you try taking medications that mess with your immune system and not show it somewhere - and not taking them makes the condition flare up which again makes you look old).
Wearing glasses that are in fashion, not in fashion or switching to contacts.
Having skin. It's either too dry, too dark, too light or the wrong colour.
Having lips. They're too old for matte lipstick, too old for glossy lipstick, too old for dark lipstick or gloss, too old for light lipstick or gloss, too old for skin tone lipstick or gloss.
Having eyebrows. If they're darker than their natural colour, they're too dark, if they're the same as their natural colour, they're too light. If they're relatively thick, they're too thick, if thinner or shaped, they're too thin or shaped wrongly.
Having eyes and putting makeup on them. If it's done in a younger trend style, it's too young and therefore too old. If it's an older method, too old. Until that comes back into fashion and then because it's done by those younger, it's too old.

I suppose that as long as I'm seen looking too old whatever I do, at least I'm not invisible yet, though.

Seriously, this is like a collection of Daily Mail headlines about what causes or cures cancer - give it long enough and whatever has been 'revealed' to cause it is announced as the cure for it.

Can we not just like things?

😊

And ET's curly perm as Mrs Travers is definitely ageing

Also too much time on mumsnet😂

AccidentallyOnPurpose · 03/01/2021 17:57

Well no one mentioned shaved head/buzz cuts yet so I guess that's a hair option .

woodhill · 03/01/2021 17:58

Billy Joel song coming to mind - really showing my age

It's still Rock and Roll to me 😊

Sums up this thread

No. PP asked for a shopping trolley with a seat. I delivered.

Please let a decrepit old lady(by MN standards.. I'm only 35) revel in her googling abilities. After all, I'm too old to do anything else.Grin

You won the internet today! As the young uns say...

umpteennamechanges · 03/01/2021 18:02

I think sticking to the same make up and hair you wore in your 20s & 30s.

See Denise Van Outen on the Great British Sewing Bee Xmas special.

She still has a shade of blonde hair that is very 2000's and could do with a more natural tone.

Her eye make up was really ageing - silver eyeshadow and very dark brows.

Again, the kind of thing that was worn in the 2000's.

It sort of reminded me when women in the 2000s were still wearing blue eyeshadow from the 1980s.

thebabessavedme · 03/01/2021 18:06

I have a shopping trolley and I love it! I can buy as many bottles of gin at once as I like and be able to get them home easily, I find trolleys are also very good for bashing the ankles of the under 50s when they snear at my boots.Grin

I think that dropping your moon cup ages you quite a bit.
Ideasplease322 · 03/01/2021 18:22

Overly styled and set hair. You know to hair do filled with hairspray that never moves.

Orla Keith handbags.

cakeallday · 03/01/2021 18:25

@Ginfordinner yes I do, but for a trip to the shops in the rain I would go for my tad more stylish stormproof puffer rather than one of my Trespass/Peter Storm 'sensible' macs (which stink of dog anyway Grin).

peaceanddove · 03/01/2021 18:31

Boot cut jeans worn with Footglove style black shoes [looks at MIL]

Matchy-matchy shoes & handbag.

Oval shaped fingernails in a pastel shade.

Bad posture and stooped shoulders.

Beige shoes.

Wearing your jeans tucked into ankle boots. Just no.

NiceGerbil · 03/01/2021 18:38

Is a Zimmer frame ageing?

And yeah Denise Van outen what a minger who'd want to look like her!!!! 🤣🤣🤣

NiceGerbil · 03/01/2021 18:39

I meant to take the piss out of the 'Alexa Chung hairdresser' name-dropper earlier but forgot Sad

Tanfastic · 03/01/2021 18:44

@ZenNudist

Grey hair yes aging but also can look very stylish. I also know very young women who die hair unusual grey pink shades and it looks fabulous and not aging. A mum at school wears her brown unstyled hair streaked with grey, just doesn't care but it makes her look old.

Unstyled hair.

Weight is the worst.

Old fashioned tailoring.

Black bootcut trousers, "sensible" black shoes and colourful floral tops.

Your skin. Dull skin = aging, massive crows feet on really quite young women = aging
Anyone with sun damage, scrawny necks and aged looking hands. But nothing can be done about this.

I disagree with the posts above saying fleece are aging. Leisure gear is worn by all ages. On thin women clearly dressed for fitness (outdoor activities etc) then it's not aging.

I think a fleece is only ageing when you wear it with bootcut jeans and black mum boots.
