I do remember gasping as a child when she got out of the carriage- to me she looked like the archetypal fairytale princess! Everything in the 80's was about big statement puffed up shiny glamour and it was very Dynasty-esque.
50yr old me thinks she looked beautiful and ethereal (so young) with lovely dewy makeup, but it was an of its time rather than timeless dress and was very crumpled.

Horsemad · 07/01/2021 22:15

I still love Diana's dress. ♥️

Laiste · 07/01/2021 23:19

Just watched the last episode of the last series of The Crown.

Diana.

If only a fraction of that series is true she was treated appallingly. Poignant now to scroll through the wedding dress pics and see the one of her walking out of the Abbey. So young and going through a nightmare by then already, eating disorder had kicked in ect.

Watching that last series of TC as she became entangled with her fate was like watching a car crash in slow motion!

Laiste · 07/01/2021 23:21

Anyway - yes - wonderful photos of the Romanovs in colour. Those costumes must have been heavy to wear. Lots of fur featuring too. I imagine the palaces were drafty places though!

“I had a dream last night I was wearing that mad bow gown to work. Nobody batted an eyelid”

🤣

Does anyone else have this? Just arrived so I’m looking forward to distracting myself from the state of the world with some royal fashion. Will share any good insights!!

Oh, I may just have to show that to DH and drop some hints, Hairydilemma!
I'm reading the Anne Glenconnor book about her time as a lady in waiting and her friendship with Princess Margaret that was recommended a few months back.
I do like a bit of royal escapism.

@StartupRepair

Can't stop looking at the Russian photos and wondering how many of these people survived the Revolution.
Some of them did - there's two photos there of stunning Zinaida Yusupova, whose son was the main conspirator in the murder of Rasputin - she managed to get out of Russia, however. And her son and his wife had been excited for the murder, so they ended up escaping Russia also. Grand Duchess Xenia Alexandrovna (the Tsar's sister) who is also pictured also survived, along with all her many children - she spent most of her later life living in Frogmore Cottage in fact, the one given to Meghan and Harry as a home.
Serenster · 08/01/2021 21:10

Ugh, exiled for the murder that should say, not excited!

They are amazing photos though. All those jewels, every one real. It's mindboggling...

Laiste · 08/01/2021 21:34

Where are they now, i wonder? All those costumes. And the jewels?

banivani · 08/01/2021 21:43

Them Russian photos - god they must all have been sweltering at that party. Very heavy sort of costumes, weren't they?

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 08/01/2021 21:49

Some of the Russian emigres managed to bring some of their jewellery with them, e.g. sewn into clothing.
Many treasures were ransacked/stolen by the Bolsheviks.
This article here is about Grand Duchess Xenia & her jewels.

I remember travelling in the Soviet Union some years ago and seeing some jewels on display in the Winter Palace, they were dazzling. Then I saw the Faberge collection! There was some terse Soviet explanation of capitalist exploitation. I just went... Ooooh, shiny and pretty!! Wink

It's Kate's 39th birthday, according to insta. Happy Birthday!

Saw a spread about Charlotte Casiraghi working for Chanel, which I thought might interest my fellow RS+Bers. Very eighties. linky

High octane glamour there with Charlotte Casiraghi! She is stunning.
Love Kate's hair in that pic!

paradyning · 09/01/2021 19:32

Charlotte is just stunning.
I really love that ditsy print Kate favours on her masks

MaudTheInvincible · 09/01/2021 19:39

CC's jawline is incredible!

paradyning I love the ditsy prints too.

TheNotSoGoodWife · 10/01/2021 00:07

@latedecember1963 I have just finished the Lady Glenconner book. What a life she had!! It really is a completely different way of life for nobility.

I have the other one recommended on one of these threads by HMs dresser in my Kindle stash too!

latedecember1963 · 10/01/2021 15:11

I've got to the part where Margaret has been given a house on Mustique and she's met Roddy.
I agree about the 'different worlds' aspect.
To have the money that allowed Colin Tennant to casually offer Margaret land or a house as a wedding present!
I hadn't realised her 2 youngest daughters had Barbara Barnes as their Nanny who then went on to Nanny Princes William and Harry. Lots of wheels within wheels.

Eaumyword · 10/01/2021 16:41

All the commentary on Lady Glenconner's book is making me want to buy it! Sounds fascinating!

AdaColeman · 10/01/2021 17:42

I noticed that Anne Glenconnor's book has won The Times "Memoir of the Year", and it's on the Best Books List of The Spectator and The Sunday Times.
It is a very chatty gossipy read! Xmas Wink Xmas Wink

RockaLock · 10/01/2021 17:45

I enjoyed reading the Lady Glenconner book.

But my overriding memory of it is, that despite the money and privilege, she actually had an awful lot of sadness in her life.

LadyEloise · 10/01/2021 17:49

I haven't read the book yet but what I know of her life it did have its very tough times. Her husband sounds horrible.

Horsemad · 10/01/2021 17:53

I've read it and enjoyed it very much but yes, her life has been very sad at times. 😟

TheNotSoGoodWife · 10/01/2021 19:27

Yes, it reinforced to me that although it is a life of privilege, that doesn’t stop - perhaps even caused? - great sadness. The classic money doesn’t buy happiness just a more comfortable level of unhappiness!

AdaColeman · 10/01/2021 19:50

It was business genius that prompted Lord Glenconner's wedding gift to Princess Margaret.

It rocketed his unknown mosquito infested island from obscurity into THE holiday destination for the super rich jet setters, and later when the Queen visited her sister there, it placed his holiday resort on the world stage, with free advertising worth millions.
