Happy New Year everyone!

If you've got five minutes to spare, relax and watch Charles, Camilla, Judi Dench, Maggie Smith and others read "T'was the night before Christmas", a lovely few moments of escapism!

I found it by going to The Royal Family website >>> Royal Family >>> Prince of Wales's website, and it's on the main page, but you can probably go directly to it.

loveisanopensore · 02/01/2021 20:44

Amazing the way the Daily Mail can crowbar a Meghan Markle mention into so many stories.

paradyning · 02/01/2021 21:24

Isn't it! They even managed to find pics of them both wearing similar dresses.

LadyEloise · 03/01/2021 12:03

Mary must find it odd that her bil's second wife looks sooo like her.
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Smile

Historical bling here - photos from the last Romanov ball

latedecember1963 · 05/01/2021 11:21

A belated happy New Year to you all!
Those photographs are just stunning, CarrotVan. 😍 My dad was born in May 1917, the year of the revolution that swept the Romanovs out of power. He remembered as a child his parents and older brother looking back on the year he was born and talking about how the world seemed in turmoil.

Horsemad · 05/01/2021 11:55

Shock Wow! Those photos are FAB! When you see the intricate detail on the garments, it's amazing. Utterly beautiful, thanks for posting, CarrotVan. 🙂

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 05/01/2021 18:02

Wow those photos are amazing @CarrotVan thanks
Although the outfits are exquisite I'm not sure I would have liked to have worn one as they must have been awfully heavy & hot!

Seeing colour photos of people famous or not from over 100 years always gives me goosebumps as the colour makes people more 'real' than black & white photography iykwim.

I think Prince Louis looks so like Tsar Nicholas Il (cousins on both sides through George V & Prince Philip).
Though James Middleton with his beard also looks like Nicholas & George.

paradyning · 05/01/2021 18:38

Incredible pictures. Look at the size of the emeralds!

MadameMiggeldy · 05/01/2021 19:10

I’m so struck by how much latter day royals look like the Russians. Amazing pictures

Maireas · 05/01/2021 19:29

Thank you, @CarrotVan! I love colour pictures of the past. Those costumes! I love the headdresses, in fact Zanaida is my new style icon. Love me a bit of a hat/mad bling head accessory. Just gorgeous.

in a style lull you can always look at weddings

Looking at these Diana’s dress is really not very nice. Really hasn’t aged well. Zara Tindall’s drop waist also seems dated

Masako’s suit is just odd. Not traditional, not modern. Like the Queen Mum remarrying or something

And the many very high lace necklines look uncomfortable and not that flattering

Mabel’s ever-decreasing bows decoration is odd but the shape is lovely

The hits for me are the simple lines in top notch fabrics

Maireas · 05/01/2021 20:37

Mabel's dress does look a bit mad with all the bows, which got mahooosive by the end of the train. In a poignant postscript, when Prince Friso was killed, she had a massive bowl on her funeral outfit, as a reference to their wedding day.

Thank you *@CarrotVan *
I loved
Diana's - so princessy/ fairytale like.
Sarah Fergusons
Mette Marit ( thought her bouquet odd )
Davina Windsors
Camilla
Princess Stephanie of Luxembourg
Princess Claire of Luxembourg
Sofia of Sweden
Princess Deniz
I adored Ekaterina Malysheva's dress

I disliked
Princess Anne's
Empress Masako
Sophie Rhys Jones's looked too big on top for her.
Mabels
Princess Marie

MadameMiggeldy · 05/01/2021 22:01

Pippa -technically-not-Royal Middleton. I loved that dress .

Eaumyword · 05/01/2021 22:10

Thank you for that lovely link, I've enjoyed scrolling through.
My favourite for sheer effortless glamour is Beatrice and Pierre Casiraghi.
Proncess Beatrice had the most beautiful floral setting.
Some of the dresses are dated - I think fitted classic styles without too much embellishment look the best.

paradyning · 06/01/2021 06:20

This one is stunning!

Thanks for all the lovely links. I've been enjoying scrolling through at odd times, though I've not commented. Like many I'm now trying to home school and work FT Confused so will be here less I guess.

MadameMiggeldy · 06/01/2021 10:23

I had a dream last night I was wearing that mad bow gown to work. Nobody batted an eyelid

😆 Anything goes these days @MadameMiggeldy!
UkuleleRose · 07/01/2021 19:10

Omgosh, those Romanov pictures! The coloring is exquisitely done, and the people look so much more real and immediate, like you could sit down and have a conversation. Unfortunately, Flashbak may be the most enticing rabbit hole on the internet and I'm at work right now. :-)

Maireas · 07/01/2021 19:20

Davina Windsor's dress was pretty, and I liked the blue bouquet, but I preferred her sister's (Rose). I thought it was a very elegant dress, and of course a gorgeous kokoshnik tiara!

Can't stop looking at the Russian photos and wondering how many of these people survived the Revolution.

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 07/01/2021 20:47

Diana's dress was lovely for its time. It creased so easily though and she was scrunched up in that carriage.
