Are the Duke and Duchess of Kent still together ?

Horsemad · 10/04/2021 10:48

@latedecember1963, thank you 🙂 Saw it & was just coming back to say what a nice pic!

Reminds me a bit of Mad Men - with the style/fashion.

@LadyEloise

Are the Duke and Duchess of Kent still together ?
Yes, I think she chose a different path at one point, in terms of duties/work, but I've noticed them together at weddings etc

Apologises all! Ignore my earlier comment. I got the nice Kents muddled up with the awful racist one who wore the brooch Blush.

MrsFin · 10/04/2021 11:44

I'm reading her biography atm.
It's one sided (obvs), but it seems to have been a pretty loveless marriage, with each of them leading their own lives.
Apparently around the time the Queen's children were getting divorced he promised the Queen, his cousin, that they wouldn't divorce, and further ruin the RF's rep at the time.
Now that's service to the monarchy!

LadyEloise · 10/04/2021 13:02

@MrsFin
What is the name of the book and by whom please ?
I think the Duchess of Kent is lovely. Very graceful. As is her daughter Helen Taylor.

SenecaFallsRedux · 10/04/2021 13:54

Speaking of Lady Pamela Hicks, I read her memoir. Nothing juicy or particularly surprising, but very interesting all the same.

Maireas · 10/04/2021 14:10

Was it Daughter of Empire, Seneca? I read that - her parents were certainly bohemian! An interesting life!

SenecaFallsRedux · 10/04/2021 14:14

Yes, Maireas that's the name of the book. It also has some interesting bits about Philip when he was growing up.

Maireas · 10/04/2021 14:18

Yes! I had to laugh when both her parents went off travelling (separately) and she and her sister were left in a hotel with the nanny for ages. They started to run out of money. Edwina arrived some months later - she had forgotten where she'd left them!

@paradyning have sent you a pm

FlorisFigure · 10/04/2021 17:07

Has anyone seen the photos of Max and Princess Ariane for her 14th birthday? As ever, Max’s smile lights up the internet.

Also not a new poster, was formerly Rhubarbisevil.

Doh! Here you go.

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 10/04/2021 19:46

That's a gorgeous photo of Max & Ariadne Floris

Thanks for the book recommendation Mrs Fin

I'll certainly get round to reading the Mountbatten book too Maireas & Seneca

I've asked MNHQ to take my Philip photo down now as I think we've all seen it now.

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 10/04/2021 19:58

I saw this lovely photo of Philip's sisters. It was the cover of Tatler in 1922.
Youngest is Sophie, then Cecilie, Theodora & Margarita.
I can see many a resemblance to HMQ & Philip's grandchildren.
Sophie I see Peter & Zara
Cecilie I see Beatrice
Theodora definitely Eugenie
Margarita I see James & a little of Louise
Whilst William & Harry are Philip well especially Harry.
With the beards Harry & a young Philip could be brothers.

Was just reading about his youngest sister. She had like 5 kids before she was 29 after marrying at 16!

MrsFin · 10/04/2021 20:20

PP has loads of nephews and nieces.
I looked them up - his family is huge. I wonder if he was in touch with any of them.

paradyning · 10/04/2021 21:15

I think he's v close to a German nephew, maybe Prince Rainer of Hesse? Sure he visited some German schloss

StartupRepair · 11/04/2021 10:04

Missed the photo Tracy! sounded lovely. I've just read the Windsor Diaries. Very sad and fascinating real diaries of a lonely teenage girl who spent time with the royal family during the war. She was always desperately trying to get closer to them, elated when she was invited over and devastated when she wasn't. Lots of mentions of Elizabeth's interest in handsome young Philip.

anomletteandaglassofwine · 11/04/2021 20:25

YouTube just suggested this to me (isn't it spooky how they know you so well)

I've just watched the first few minutes but it looks great, it's Lady Pamela talking about the early years as. HM's lady in waiting.

I thought this photo was beautiful

Nice picture, Tracy. A handsome family, the Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glucksbergs! (Also the Battenbergs).
I love looking for family resemblances.

Love that Queen swatch @Seraphinite
I can imagine HMQ would find it funny too.

There's a lovely photo of Philip with George on the BBC news website (have attached) taken by Catherine.
