Why would you even WANT to copy the Parisienne look?

Just think it's interesting when you see threads but also newspaper articles etc about the "French" look and specifically the Parisian look - a kind of understated elegant style, I get it.

But honestly, having lived in France for a decade now (in six cities in different regions) I really think this is a bit of a misplaced myth, in the same way that in France in some crowds there can be a bit of glamourising around "le gentleman so British". Sure, when you're in london you may very occasionally see some really dapper looking men wearing those big beige overcoats (what are they called by the way? The big flappy things they wear over suits? Like a kind of trench coat?).

But by and large whenever I go back to the UK I genuinely find British women dress better, with more snap, in outfits that have more interest. What I've learnt from my time here is that the whole understated elegance thing doesnt necessarily stem from wanting to look effortless, it's actually about not wanting to stand out from the crowd. I remember a friend asking me if I thought her shoes were too "m'as tu vu" (flashy). They just weren't black. In fact you barely ever see coats here that arent black, grey, or beige. Teenagers basically look no different from their parents. Fashion doesnt really happen at all. I think in the 10 years I've been here nothing has really changed, its still jeans, delicate trainers, a Longchamp handbag and a trench, just like Mum. Maybe the jeans got slightly wider lately; that's all.

It always seems to me theres some fabulous styled women in the UK, "even" outside London. I see "even" because outside of Paris, in the French "provinces" thing start to go downhill quite rapidly IMO.

So why does the French thing continue to inspire? I honestly think in the UK you are freer to experiment, you have more choice, and people by and large look pretty rocking. Maybe the trend for heavy makeup could be toned down a bit, also the fillers trend (from what I'm reading) in the UK is a bit shocking.

I agree dreaming - I think London style was a lot more interesting when it was cheaper to live there. Same goes for New York and probably most major cities. Internet shopping and Instagram have also led to greater uniformity I think.
So is there anywhere exciting left? Anywhere??

@Floisme

I post on the thread in question - why don't you drop in and ask?

Personality I don't look remotely French but we talk about all kinds of stuff. Several regular posters don't live in the UK and it's interesting to get a more European perspective on things, and also to see liinks that aren't from the UK high street.

And while I might agree that, beyond a few square miles, Parisienne style is a bit of a myth, I think the same can be said for UK originality - we've been living off that myth for just as long as the French.

What are you talking about? I think this thread is about the overly rated and rather amusingly worshipped “French style”.

@MarshaBradyo

I prefer Clemence

Alexa isn’t my style

Alexa is fabulous and will always win hands down.

I think Berlin is still fun. But also rapidly gentrifying so we'll see.

Yes I know, that has since been clarified by the op and we've moved on.

Alexa does look good but it’s not so relevant to me.

Then again I don’t really do that style icon worship thing. Would never buy her clothing line for example although some must.

I believe it is a total myth that french women are all slim, The biggest knickers I have ever seen were in france, on a market stall, they were so big a family could have gone camping in them! Grin

I've not been to Berlin for a while dreaming but yes it was interesting and buzzy. The East side of the city was still a pretty cheap place to live and everyone who served your coffee or pizza seemed to be an artist or a musician who'd moved there cos the rents were low. Wonder if they're still there? And if not, where have they moved to?

MarshaBradyo · 15/12/2020 13:04

I do love London style sometimes it has to be said

Just thinking about people looking good in various areas

Melange99 · 15/12/2020 13:04

I work in central London in normal times, and was brought up in central London but moved away 10 years ago. I have been WAH since the start of the pandemic and I miss dressing up. I still dress smartly still after an initial slobby phase, but I miss using my handbags as opposed to my cross body ones, my fancier more formal stuff. The area I live in is not dressy at all, I would stand out too much to dress up more formally.

MarshaBradyo · 15/12/2020 13:05

Berlin has its own vibe

As does Melbourne

Actually I love that we see these differences rather than convince people one is best

Janegrey333 · 15/12/2020 13:06

@GoldfishParade

Sorry in case it wasnt clear this is nothing to do with the Parisiennes threads on here which I havent even visited, I'm talking about the general aspiration
You were quite clear. I was surprised to see that thread being referred to. Confused

Afraid it's changed a lot (I lived there until recently). Rents skyrocketed everywhere central and the city is overrun with expats. The only saving grace is that Berlin still has loads of social housing so still lots of artists and interesting people around, so it's not quite boring yet.

I was starting at the beginning of the thread as is usual. When I saw the slightly defensive reference to that thread, I spent a while combing through the opening post to find the reference. (My reading and comprehension are up to speed, incidentally.) Smile
stella1know · 15/12/2020 13:16

I like this thread, there is sometimes such worship of the french femme eg in magazines and books, that you are taught it is the epitome of grace, class, elegance and you are a lazy slob if you don’t look as neat and chic. But it isn’t necessarily, it was just filmable and photogenic at a time when many iconic films were made and photographers flocked.

Alexa is amazing.

Is there a thread about Scandi style that allows for short people? Oversized toddler dresses and coccoon coats sound wonderful.

Floisme · 15/12/2020 13:18

I remember a few threads about Scandi style but mainly about the lagen look.

Janegrey333 · 15/12/2020 13:19

Kreuzberg in Berlin is pretty edgy - but then it is home to the more bohemian types - and students. The people there have an innate sense of style, I think, and do not slavishly adhere to a “popular” idea of what style entails. We loved that area.

Not fashion but homes - when I want interiors inspiration I look on Rightmove at houses in Levenshulme in Manchester Grin they're so much nicer to me than houses in much more completely gentrified nearby Didsbury.

I have to say, the last time I was in London (pre-pandemic) I came away a bit disappointed in the current state of British creativity. I used to love checking out people's outfits on the tube but last time it was all very uniform. Shoreditch was pretty much wall to wall black skinnies; Camden Passage - where I used to go vintage shopping - was way out of my league price wise, and Camden market looked like it hadn't changed for 30 years. If anyone has any tips on where the interesting neighbourhoods are now, I'd love to hear.

But I think the biggest let down for me was New York - fabulous city but the high street was dire.

I liked Rome - saw quite a lot of old men wearing beautifully tailored suits and looking great.

Shoreditch style can still look really good

New York is a bit harder to find although I did go in winter. Lots of puffer jackets iirc

HundredMilesAnHour · 15/12/2020 13:40

Shoreditch tends to be full of suburban visitors these days. The more creative types have mainly moved on to places like Hackney Wick or Dalston or even Walthamstow or Leyton.

Lots of interesting fashion on display around Fish Island (Hackney Wick) during the times when we were allowed to eat / drink at bars / restaurants. And definitely no "French look". It's most definitely eccentric English around there - and quite fabulous!

Floisme · 15/12/2020 13:45

Yeah I did see some very stylish people in Shoreditch, but in its own way it felt just as much a uniform look as any other.

I think with New York, I'd been watching too many films and Sex and the City episodes (it was a few years ago) and was expecting to see Carrie Bradshaw on every corner but it was mainly people in work clothes and trainers.
The first time I ever saw a mother and daughter dressed the same was in New York.

Floisme · 15/12/2020 13:46

Hackney Wick - thanks Hundred!

GoldfishParade · 15/12/2020 14:02

So is the lagenlook actually a thing in Scandinavia? Is that the main style there?

The worst for me is brussels - there's the preppy eurocrat look but then the rest is 90s clubbing vibe stuff - lots of shiny black puffa jackets etc
