It was me suggesting the serum was a bit niche! I’m 41. I think you’re right that the Liberty demographic is a bit older, but I think lip lines take a while to appear (longer than eye wrinkles), unless you’re a smoker I guess.

I was tempted by Cult Beauty but didn’t get it as I tend to get a couple of their GWPs each year and so knew a lot of the products / brands they had in the calendar this year.

I actually look at all of the higher end multi brand calendars and then decide which one to get after poring over and comparing the contents for hours on end. I actually decided to get F&M this year (had it last year too after 2 Liberty years) but then dithered so long that it sold out.

mynameiscalypso · 10/12/2020 21:07

I think I probably had the second or third one they did. It was definitely before they were suck a 'big thing'. My birthday is at the end of November so it is usually my birthday present - no way I could justify it for myself!

KatharinaRosalie · 10/12/2020 21:26

yes I also compared the high end ones, tried to get Cult or Net a Porter, but both sold out too fast, so this was option 3. Had Net a Porter last year, this one had some really great stuff and I used almost everything.

RoxyL · 10/12/2020 21:46

I’m 40 and agree today’s product seems very niche and for a narrow age range. My third year buying myself the Liberty calendar and not feeling excited about this years offerings, So far. I like the lip pencil and will use the mask, apart from that all will be regifted. I’ll choose a different one next year unless things really pick up.

YouWereRight · 10/12/2020 21:48

I don’t think today’s lip serum is for me. I’m still happy overall, and happy to try things, but this is just a bit meh to me.

I’m early 30’s and I’ve lusted after the Liberty (everything) advent calendar since it began, but was in a weird job situation the whole time. Now I’m a bit more secure, I thought I would treat myself.

friendlyflicka · 10/12/2020 22:25

I like the lip bit because it is the bit of my face that I focus on the lines. But actually I am a bit hard to please because I just use prescription retinol bought from overseas and am happy with that for skin care and just think the rest is genetics really.

I love nice smelling things though. A bit of a perfume and bath product addict and so this calendar pleases me a lot.

Nc135 · 10/12/2020 22:42

@friendlyflicka I’m with you on just now going all out on the prescription strength retinol and everything else - apart from perhaps acids/vit c and spf - are all a bit meh now. So I love all the smellies. Have just put the lip thing on now tho before bed Grin

Cocopogo · 11/12/2020 00:44

I love the lip serum, thought like yesterday’s I’m more excited about the bottle. I keep opening and closing it!
I used the body oil earlier when I had a bath and it smells divine

MiaN · 11/12/2020 04:19

I also use prescription strength retinol and this contributes to me being fussy about ingredients to other products. I am 42 and have fine lines around my upper lips. The lip product from yesterday I wouldn't buy for 2 euro in aldi based on ingredients list and my experience with it matches that.

There are some serious hits in this advent, one of them yet to come that compliment skincare with prescription strength retinol. The Venn moisturizer is also spot on

When there are 25 product curated by someone else to cater variety of people it is normal to dislike some. I didn't like the start product in Space NK advent and I loved so many other products I am happy with it.

It's my first purchase of liberty advent and I really wanted to experience it. I have birthday in September and received Space NK as gift. I purchased the Cult beauty myself and I opened it November. Liberty is gift form my husband and I am opening it this as proper advent. So I have plenty to compare it too.

Liberty so far is my least favorite. Cult beauty is fantastic for anyone who is into active ingredients but may underwhelm those more interested in more spa like (think elemis marine cream) experience.

thecognoscenti · 11/12/2020 06:47

Today's looks good. It seems versatile, in contrast with yesterday's, which only seems to have one purpose.

Polpette · 11/12/2020 06:57

@MiaN I was looking at the ingredients list for the lip cream yesterday as I was trying to get my head around the price. I honestly don't understand what justifies such a high value.

I love the whole advent calendar experience though - and I think discussing everything in this thread really adds to it (the good and the bad!) so thank you to everyone here.

MiaN · 11/12/2020 07:11

did you try today's?

It feels soo nice on my overwashed/over sanitzed hands. It reminds me of charlotte tilbury night cream or Elizabeth Arden 8 hour magic cream but it's actually more enjoyable consistency and absorbs quicker. I don't think I will use it on my face, but it is perfection for my hands.

they have a little video on how it can be used

Polpette · 11/12/2020 07:27

Ah! I was a bit baffled at what this was as it seemed to be everything, but now you've said 8 hour cream I get it. Thankfully it smells much nicer.

But how can it be a primer AND make up remover? What magic is this??

I'm keen to try something from Malin and Goetz so I'm excited about this one.

mynameiscalypso · 11/12/2020 07:36

I generally like M&G as a brand so happy with this - I've just used a little on my very dry and chapped lips and it seems nice. Will be a useful thing to have around.

Chickydoo · 11/12/2020 07:36

Multi tasking balm from Malin & Goetz. A sort of Vaseline/ 8 hour oil cream thing. Smells nice though. I still have the deodorant from this company that was in last years calendar.

Interesting to hear your views on the different calendars Mia, it's so hard to know what to go for. I'm mid 40s and definitely need to up my retinol as am starting to lose definition around my neck and jowls. I wanted Fenwicks but it sold out very quickly so may try that or F&M next year. Cult Beauty also sounds good but don't know if I'd understand the ingredients enough to get the most out of it.

This morning's looks good. I wasn't wowed by the M&G moisturiser & cleanser (IIRC) in last year's calendar, it was fine but nothing special. But have used this as hand cream this morning and it feels good.

Pomegranatespompom · 11/12/2020 08:57

Looking forward to trying today’s.
It’s annoying that the over pricing of yesterday’s lips cream helps liberty to give the impression you are getting £800 of products for £200 when this simply isn’t correct.
I like enough of the products not to feel ripped off but next year, after 5 years of Liberty, I’ll have a change.
I know you can’t please everyone - but yesterday’s product just felt like a let down.

I do miss the m & S one, it was a nice little supplement if you ignore the black eyeliner.
Next year I’m aiming for rituals and Fortnums.
Thanks for your interesting post @MiaN

Pomegranatespompom · 11/12/2020 08:58

I’m 40s too. I need to look into retinol.

imp2007 · 11/12/2020 09:02

Today's is a hit think it will be really useful to have around - maybe a bit like the Egyptian magic from a couple of years ago - that all got used up in my house - enjoyed by DH too!!! Smells good x

Chickydoo · 11/12/2020 09:02

This is my 3rd year of Liberty.
I also had a Jo Malone one year.
I might try F&M next year.

KatharinaRosalie · 11/12/2020 09:22

I'm on retinol as well - prescription strength but you can buy it over the counter in Spain, so luckily I stocked up last time. Retirides it's called, if you have any friends in Spain who can ship some over.

Orcadianrythyms · 11/12/2020 09:24

My balm is all oil so far!! Might need to work the tube. Yesterday's was a pointless product which clearly no fool would buy and Liberty took in bulk to massage the value of the calendar Hmm I'm in the demographic 50+ but tiny lip lines are the least of my worries.
This was my first step up to high end calendars but feel this has been disappointing. Probably not helped by looking at the general thread and lusting after other things - I'm going F&M next year, that face cream today would have made my heart sing. Oh well.

Nc135 · 11/12/2020 09:25

Retinol is the game changer ladies. Prescription strength. Tretinoin. I get it from my local facial clinic up there road.

Pomegranatespompom · 11/12/2020 09:42

@Orcadianrythyms that’s exactly how o feel, they’ve massaged the price of the cake set and it feels wrong. Off to look on other thread.

How do you use retinol ? !

friendlyflicka · 11/12/2020 13:34

Why is everyone hating the lip stuff more than anything else. I have tried it for 2 days and not expecting miracles but wouldn't write it off, what am I missing?
