I can't find the right parka despite seemingly endless searching. I want something simple, with clean lines (no fur, or detachable fur), not too bulky but warm enough for winter. Water proof or water resistant.

These are examples of ones I like:
www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-partners-winter-parka-khaki/p5099119 (sold out in my size Sad)

And

www.toa.st/uk/product/womens+coats+and+jackets/c0pcf/cotton+parka.htm?clr=C0PCF_OliveGrove_sw (dry clean only and super pricey)

Budget up to around 300... please help!

@MrsWhites thank you for letting me know! I’ll go for a down puffer I think!

Does anyone have a discount offer code for protected species? Thanks

Thanks again AnotherEmma! I might try the Wildwood and will report back.

Great thread OP, I hope you can choose from all your options now!

My DH has practically lived in head to toe Carhartt for the last 20 years and has bought me the odd parka over the years, which look very cool and are brilliant quality!

If you're near London it's worth going into the Carharrt flagship store in Covent Garden and trying a few different on first.

Graffitiqueen · 28/10/2020 09:49

I've gone for the Didrikson Erika in green and I'm very pleased with it. It fits over my big boobs and has a drawstring at the back so it is flattering at the waist.

Graffitiqueen · 28/10/2020 09:50

If I didn;t have big boobs and need something slim at the waist I'd have gone for this:

AnotherEmma · 28/10/2020 13:12

If I was going to order a Didriksons to try it would be the Cajsa but I suspect it will be too tight around my bum/hips.

I have finally found a parka that fits me nicely! This one: www.tog24.com/collections/all/products/nawton-womens-waterproof-parka-dark-indigo
It's quite boring but inoffensive and I might keep it because I'm in desperate need of a coat now and it's the best fit by miles!

greenoak · 28/10/2020 13:24

I have a North Face Suzanne. It has princess seams so really flattering and the detachable outer layer is not quilted (it’s waterproof raincoat polyester) so I don’t look like the Michelin man. I’ve seen a few online reviews that they’re not warm enough for winter but with a fleece layer they’re perfect, and then you can de-layer as you go.

I very nearly spilt 4 figures on a Canada Goose until a Canadian friend said hers was too warm for all but the coldest days, and you can’t peel it off in layers depending on the weather - if you get too warm, your only choice is to take it off.

rk47 · 28/10/2020 14:18

@greenoak is this the one you have www.thenorthface.co.uk/shop/en-gb/tnf-gb/womens-suzanne-triclimate-parka-4svp ? I was wondering about that one but not totally sure on separates. Do they sit well together

@AnotherEmma the tog24 one looks good. I a lot of them are not very exciting. I decided to keep a Didrikson Frida but the popper came off the second time I wore it so sending it back! (Think it’s a sign!) I did like it although less flattering when walking because it bunches a bit round the hips. Warm and dry though. It’s not that dissimilar from the casja.

minipie · 28/10/2020 14:53

Hooray AnotherEmma! Fit is so important.

hellojim · 29/10/2020 17:38

I am returning the John Lewis parka as it is probably 2 sizes too big and a bit long for me too, so makes me look very dumpy. It seems to have a dropped front hem (if that's how you say it) and the cuffs don't sit quite right either. Shame as the materiel and colour are nice and it has a lovely soft hood lining. I'll keep looking!

greenoak · 30/10/2020 11:03

Hi @rk47 I find it’s a very neat fit actually - I’m only 5’3” and rotund so I wanted something that didn’t add bulk. The waterproof outer coat and the inner coat (polyester not down) are zipped together. I’m very pleased with it, although in an ideal world I would have liked a zipped-in knee-length fleece layer too. My husband has a three layer model just like that from Barbour and I wish they’d do a similar model for women, although I don’t like waxed coats because they’re so heavy.

rk47 · 30/10/2020 17:04

Thank you @greenoak. I didn’t realise it zipped together, that sounds much better that just separates

nongnangning · 30/10/2020 19:26

Thanks to this thread I got a great new thick winter coat which I am really pleased with, this one
Finisterre Vellus
On the expensive side but it seems really high quality

AdoptedBumpkin · 30/10/2020 19:51

I'm thinking of getting a shiny parka, should I?

AnotherEmma · 30/10/2020 19:59

nongnangning
Looks good!

I have a dilemma, will need to wear a warm coat for a day out tomorrow and could wear the Tog24 one but I'm still waiting for a Danefae coat and I didn't want to take off the the label and wear it until I could choose between the two. Gah!

Searchesforhipbones · 30/10/2020 20:04

@nongnangning it looks gorgeous!

rk47 · 30/10/2020 20:25

Looks lovely @nongnangning

Argh...that’s a tricky one @AnotherEmma. If you’re not totally sure about the Tog24 I’d probably try and get away with wearing layers under a waterproof. Doesn’t look like it’s going to be really cold. I’m really indecisive though!

AnotherEmma · 30/10/2020 20:25

Thanks, yes that's what I'm thinking, layer up!

delilahbucket · 30/10/2020 20:28

I have a Jack Wolfskin parka. It's lovely and warm and fully waterproof. It does have detachable fur which I have removed. You would never know it was there.

Which one Delia? I have had a look online but need to wait for discounts or a sale I think!
AnotherEmma · 31/10/2020 07:47

The Madison Avenue one is lovely and no faux fur on the hood.
