Most stylish parka you've seen?

I can't find the right parka despite seemingly endless searching. I want something simple, with clean lines (no fur, or detachable fur), not too bulky but warm enough for winter. Water proof or water resistant.

These are examples of ones I like:
www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-partners-winter-parka-khaki/p5099119 (sold out in my size Sad)

And

www.toa.st/uk/product/womens+coats+and+jackets/c0pcf/cotton+parka.htm?clr=C0PCF_OliveGrove_sw (dry clean only and super pricey)

Budget up to around 300... please help!

Barbour Mirabelle looks lovely online.
Anyone seen it in real life ?

AnotherEmma · 25/10/2020 16:25

My verdict on the Madison Avenue parka for @rk47 and anyone else who's interested: it's lovely! Excellent quality, I like the style as it's pretty minimalist, both smart and warm so it would be versatile, and the fleecy lining in the collar and hood are lovely, plus you can adjust the size of the hood. Tragically, the fit isn't right on me (as I said, I'm an hourglass/pear with huge boobs and bum, so I've really struggled!) but I think it should be a decent fit on others. It's definitely worth trying anyway.

I've done a mumsnet search and found a recommendation for Danefae, apparently good for pear shapes, so I've been looking at their coats:
danefae.dk/en/catalog/category/view/s/vinterfrakker/id/46/
I'm not a huge fan of the silver buttons and zips (I'd prefer something less visible ie same colour as fabric to blend in better) but the styles aren't bad so I am considering an order even though I'll have to pay for delivery from Denmark... and pay return postage if it's not right Confused

Thank you @AnotherEmma
Sorry it wasn’t the one for you. Do you mind me asking how long it is? And did the front poof out a bit below the waist?
Hope you have more luck with the next one!

Chilledchablis · 25/10/2020 20:36

Love my Brasher Hopegill Coat in green, no fur trim, quilted lining and loads of pockets for dog leads, treats etc. Practical hood and decent length also waterproof, so far anyway! Bargain at under £100. Keeps the Scottish weather at bay so that's enough for me👍

AnotherEmma · 25/10/2020 20:39

It's not super long on me - I'm 5'8 and it covers my bum and very top of thighs.

Are you asking whether it's fitted at the waist and then looser below the waist, kind of A-line style? Nope! When I look at it (not wearing it) it's very slightly narrower at the waist and flared out below the waist, but not much at all, it's still pretty straight up and down. And when I try it on, it's slightly loose around the waist and too tight around the hips and bum.

Hope that answers your question?!

AnotherEmma · 25/10/2020 20:41

Cross post, that was to rk47

flowswest · 25/10/2020 20:52

I bought the John Lewis one at the start. Had to send it bAck, it is huge and way oversized I'd say two sizes up!!! It wasn't a nice fit very bulky!

minipie · 26/10/2020 14:29

And when I try it on, it's slightly loose around the waist and too tight around the hips and bum.

This answers my question (that I was about to ask) thanks! Dammit. I am short, slim but hourglassy (more pear really...) and need something fitted round the waist.

AnotherEmma · 26/10/2020 15:04

Minipie
I'm sure we're not the only women with this body shape, I wish they made parkas for us too! 😭

rk47 · 26/10/2020 17:48

Thanks @AnotherEmma. I need something fitted at the waist too. Think I might try a north face one next

AnotherEmma · 26/10/2020 17:50

@rk47
I tried a north face one and it wasn't fitted at the waist, it was straight up and down. Also came up small. And not good if you're an hourglass/pear shape. Sorry!

Gwenhwyfar · 26/10/2020 19:41

What do people think of this one? I liked it when I tried it on because it gave me a waist - you can't really see that in the photo because the model's wearing it opened.

AnotherEmma · 26/10/2020 19:43

Looks quite nice but the photos are silly aren't they, you can't see the coat very well 🤦🏻‍♀️

Gwenhwyfar · 26/10/2020 19:45

Thanks Emma. It looked nice when I tried it on, but I can't be buying coats at the drop of a hat. I just hope that non-essential shops won't close for ages while I'm dithering.

rk47 · 27/10/2020 13:32

Thanks for the heads up on the north face @AnotherEmma

@Gwenhwyfar I think this might be an updated version of one I bought a few couple of years ago. Quite loose fitting but loved it. I’m not sure how waterproof it is though, if you’re looking for something fully waterproof

happygolurkey · 27/10/2020 14:12

I like David Barry for coats with a bit more shaping to the waist. They have this parka among others just now. there's a sale on too

I ordered the Protected Species Winter Parka and it's quite good. Proper drawstring waist. Thin (basically a fleece-lined waterproof rather than a padded coat like other parkas) which makes it quite flattering because it doesn't add bulk. Surprisingly warm though. Only drawback is that it's not a very generous fit, I couldn't fit a thick jumper underneath. So if anyone else is ordering and is between sizes, maybe size up.

minipie · 27/10/2020 15:23

Thanks AnotherEmma! I like Protected species but I want something with a big hood really... and probably with faux fur... Just find it more flattering. Wondering about the other Jack Wolfskin offerings especially the Wildwood Parka

Is it the boobs that caused issues with the Madison Avenue - my boobs are more small/medium than huge... I’m hoping the Wildwood would accommodate my bum and thighs as it’s cut away at the front and not very long.

MrsWhites · 27/10/2020 15:25

@Gwenhwyfar I like that one. I ordered the padded version of it, it arrived today. I like it and it feels very warm but my last Zara coat was a medium which has gone to small so I ordered a large this time and I’m not sure if it’s a bit too big. I’m a decent size 10 (maybe a 12 sometimes) but just find Zara sizing so hard to judge!

Buggedandconfused · 27/10/2020 15:46

@MrsWhites that looks nice, Is it quite heavy to wear?

The Wildwood parka looks nice and a better shape than the Madison Avenue, looks like it has a more fitted waist and goes out a bit below the waist...

The Madison Avenue was definitely tight around the bum/thighs and not just the bust, but you might be fine as I am very big atm Blush (I could blame pregnancy with PGP and lockdown, in truth I've always been curvy but they made it worse!)

MrsWhites · 27/10/2020 16:15

@Buggedandconfused yes it’s very heavy. I’m actually not sure if I’ll keep it, it’s very bulky and heavy for everyday wear.

Looks very warm.
I just fell in love with the 'waist' on the other one as I'm so straight up and down.
