I can't find the right parka despite seemingly endless searching. I want something simple, with clean lines (no fur, or detachable fur), not too bulky but warm enough for winter. Water proof or water resistant.

These are examples of ones I like:
www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-partners-winter-parka-khaki/p5099119 (sold out in my size Sad)

And

www.toa.st/uk/product/womens+coats+and+jackets/c0pcf/cotton+parka.htm?clr=C0PCF_OliveGrove_sw (dry clean only and super pricey)

Budget up to around 300... please help!

Oooh I've been tempted by the plant hunter so I'm shamelessly placemarking to see what you think of it

PalacePaper · 15/10/2020 07:13

I have been following this thread as the same as every year I'm looking for a waterproof, warm parka. Thanks for all your suggestions Smile I have been checking them all out. I ordered the Uniqlo short down parka, and as some others are considering it I thought I'd share my view in case it's helpful.

It's a lovely coat, lightweight but feels like it would be cosy and really well made. But the fit isn't great on me, not enough shaping at the waist so looks baggy and then a bit tight on the hips. I look a bit like a triangle in it. And not fully waterproof. So sadly I'm sending it back. I have a trespass one on the way, and if that's no good I'm considering a didriksons. I know just what you mean about this feeling like a hobby or maybe obsession in my case Grin

AnotherEmma · 15/10/2020 07:20

Thanks Palace that's very helpful!
Hope your Trespass coat is better 🤞

I took the kids to a country park this morning and was checking out everyone's parkas, I must have seemed like a right weirdo Grin

BlueTitsRock · 16/10/2020 13:08

who knew there were £900 parkas Shock

OP, I have this one. Really waterproof. But not awfully warm. it has a fleece lining inside but warm enough die spring/autumn. On cold days, I wear a fleece thermal jacket under it. really nice and minimalistic.

@Trying81

Has anyone had the White Stuff Bayeswater parka? Like the look of it but unsure on the fit
@Trying81 No idea about the fit I'm afraid but I've just seen there's 20% off if you're still thinking of buying it.
Trying81 · 16/10/2020 13:28

Ooh thank you I’ll take a look

Searchesforhipbones · 16/10/2020 14:00

i just got this decathlon one as sometimes they produce insanely amazing stuff for a brilliant price, but alas wasn't right in practice:

www.decathlon.co.uk/browse/c0-women/c1-clothing/c3-parka-coats/_/N-15ix7hy

Just not right in that not dissimilar enough to another one I have, but still very comfy and warm and nice looking at £130, so definitely worth checking out.

I’ve been doing this too! Blush

@BlueTitsRock that’s so nice! And I actually spotted someone wearing a similar one on the school run recently - it looked great. Alas I have banned myself from buying any more coats until I’ve returned the ones I’ve ordered. So far the M&S one came and went - amazing lining (so soft!) but shape did nothing for me. John Lewis one coming today and Seasalt yet to arrive...

I’ve been hunting for the perfect coat too! My husband keeps laughing at my for ordering (and returning) so many. So far they’ve all been massive or the shape’s looked ridiculous.

Just ordered a regatta one and am tempted by a Jack Wolfskin or North Face one.

Sasuma · 17/10/2020 19:20

Sorry @Othering those Parajumpers coats are hideous. Made with duck down, rabbit fur and raccoon fur. Necessary in 2020?!

Othering · 17/10/2020 19:25

Oh really? God, I'm so sorry, I didn't see the real fur bit. Horrendous. I'll ask for the post to be deleted, as I absolutely do not want products like that promoted. Quite the opposite.
AnotherEmma · 17/10/2020 19:51

My North Face parka arrived, it's lovely (gorgeous colour, good quality, cosy) but too tight on me 😭
The next size up is out of stock.

I'm getting frustrated now as everything I've ordered has been too tight (even though I thought I was ordering the right size) and it's making me feel crap about my body Sad

I don't know if this is something about parkas, maybe it's the wrong style for an hourglass, or maybe I just need to accept that I'm too fat and stop blaming the coats!

Weirdly though my size 14 Seasalt raincoat still fits ok (albeit a bit tight around the hips) but the size 16 Seasalt parka was too tight!

TazMac · 17/10/2020 19:54

Also looking for a new coat. Will be back to look at the recommendations later.

MuserOwl · 17/10/2020 20:14

@anotherEmma yeh the north face sizing is very tight.
What parka did you go for?

After i ordered the brooklyn parka i saw the aral parka which is cheaper and looks warm and waterproof as well. No explanation on the site about which parkas are the warmest.

AnotherEmma · 17/10/2020 20:19

Yes it was the Aral parka that I ordered, in green
www.thenorthface.co.uk/shop/en-gb/tnf-gb/womens-aral-parka-4st9?variationId=D7V

It is lovely and seems pretty warm so worth a try if you like the look of it.

Thank you for mentioning that their sizing can be tight, that makes me feel a bit better.

MuserOwl · 17/10/2020 20:27

Their sizing is out of synch with the rest of what's out there. I am a size 8 on top. 32 a/b. If that and I still went for a medium because I'm size ten on my hips. LUckily I knew this from when I tried on a NF thermoball. And I couldn't do up a small.

I wish I'd gone for the aral in green. It's lovely! I like that colour. Wish I'd seen it before I ordered. I swear it only appeared on the site after I ordered the brooklyn! maybe in a year or two My bank balance has to recover from the brooklyn parka first! which I am happy with.

AnotherEmma · 17/10/2020 20:32

Ok I'm changing the subject but this is a mild obsession of mine... if you're a size 8 for tops, it's very unlikely that your bra size is 32A/B, have you measured yourself using Boob or Bust?

AnotherEmma · 17/10/2020 20:34

Just for fun I'm going to guess that BoB will size you at 28D Grin

MuserOwl · 17/10/2020 20:40

oh really? I wear bra-lettes which tend to be xs, s, m, l, xl rather than a formal bra size but I think I'm about 32'' around the back with a 'cup' size that is a little bit more than A.
I don't like wearing an actual bra. Find them too scratchy.
Whenever I have been professionally measured, I find the bra too loose. But I haven't been measured for a bra in over a decade I think!

MuserOwl · 17/10/2020 20:42

@AnotherEmma

oh yeh, this is ringing a vague bell, I'm sure I have put my measurements in to an online tool and needed to lie down afterwards with the shock!
AnotherEmma · 17/10/2020 20:42

Where did you get measured? Not M&S by any chance?!

(Sorry for derail, people! But the right size bra changed my life Grin)
