Sote tom Ford noir de noir sent to me by a kind perfumista:)

FloraMacDonald · 14/12/2020 21:08

Sorry I brought the mood down. It's all a bit crap, isn't it.
On a lighter note, I've just discovered Peaky Blinders. I know I'm late to the party, but I do like some gratuitous violence, after spending the last ten years watching age-appropriate television.

Tam Dao for me today, but I went swimming earlier so all I can smell is chlorine.

OneNightTimeMenaceStrikesBack · 14/12/2020 21:09

@Shrillharridan if no ones nabbed that rebel from you, id be interested though i would suggest notposting it this side of christmas! i have parcels posted royal mail a month and a half ago that are still...well....who knows where they are

sorry ive been MIA yet again, i broke my wrist after falling mid siezure, i ended up wrapped round the bottom of the toilet which is just lovely, so ive not been able to type very well plus i got sucked into the christmas threads!!

Shrillharridan · 14/12/2020 21:16

flora I think everyone is feeling a bit fragile atm. Tam dao is lovely.
one omg! Hope you're feeling better? What a nightmare.
I'll put the DRB to one side for you and send after Xmas :)
Its really lovely but after a while my skin makes it go odd :( I LOVE the story behind it.

Shrillharridan · 14/12/2020 21:17

Peaky blinders is awesome.
I'm loving the mandatorily atm and am watching with the dc.

Shrillharridan · 14/12/2020 21:20

I've been watching a LOT of TV lately...schitts creek, ghosts, upstart crow, parks and rec...light funny stuff.
My new dark grey velvet sofa covers arrived today.. I'm really pleased with them.

QueenPaws · 14/12/2020 21:34

SOTD gypsy water

I've found a candle scent that I've fallen madly in love with. It's basically summer when the grass is all dry and crunchy and the fields are bone dry and the sun is beating down. Anyway it is beautiful and I want to drown myself in it Grin
Description from the company is

Top notes: Cut grass, Bergamot
Heart notes: Petrichor, Geranium
Base notes: Vetiver Root, Sandalwood

OneNightTimeMenaceStrikesBack · 14/12/2020 21:35

thanks Shrill ill obviously pay for it once xmas is out of the way (can you BELIEVE its a week away?!?!?!) i just dont see anything arriving if its posted now and id rathe rit not get lost in the sorting office which is what im assuming has happened to my other sutff now as its just/.... not here. im ok, its a struggle to wrap gifts though with one arm bound up!! theres an awful lot of sellotape involved int he wrapping and its far from pretty but its getting done bit by bit which is all that matters!

riotlady · 14/12/2020 22:41

SOTD Penhaligon’s Ingenue Cousin Flora, am wearing pink tracky bottoms and a rainbow stripey jumper and it felt like it went with my outfit xD

Shrillharridan · 15/12/2020 17:35

Hi
How are you today one?
Sotd pp by the fireplace.
I've bought some black opium for my sister for Xmas...she's had a rough year.
We usually do a family secret santa but mum has taken her loathing of Xmas to New heights this year and is refusing to be involved.
So I sent her a small Xmas tree from bloom and wild through the post (hahahaha)
Neither of my dc (17 and 12) have asked for anything this year. Argh.
I've got them lots of lovely things but nothing "wow"
I sometimes miss the xmas mornings with little ones with eyes filled with wonder (sob sniff)
We have no Carol services, Xmas services etc locally.
No meeting with friends for Xmas get togethers.
Ugh.
Tbh it wouldn't surprise me if the govt u turn on the Xmas bubbles thing.
So. I'm making no plans. Apart from smelling wondrous of course.
Dh won a cash prize in his works Xmas raffle and has given me £50 :)
Normally I'd buy perfume but I've been rather naughty this year re fbs so I'll save it (boo)

Shrillharridan · 15/12/2020 17:36

Sounds lovely riot

OneNightTimeMenaceStrikesBack · 15/12/2020 18:07

SOTD POAL which mysteriously doesn’t last on me. So, weird skin to add to the above list of fun.

Shrillharridan · 15/12/2020 23:25

Pears 💜

I'm going to suggest a perfumista 2020 top of the pops sniffs 😁
Best - and worst - of your perfume discoveries of 2020?
What do you think?
Any number, doesn't need to be 10.
I'll start;

  1. Clean reseverve sueded oud. I love this. A diet version of mmm by the fireplace.
  2. Avon little black dress party. A flanker and a very wearable floral oriental.
  3. Estee lauder modern muse nuit. Gorgeous patchouli.
  4. Chypre siam. Ooof. Love it.
  5. Black opium. Coffee and vanilla loveliness.
  6. Diptique Tam dao. I just wish it lasted longer on my skin :(
  7. JHAG lady vengeance
  8. ELDO exit the king - ALL the aldehyde!
  9. Future primitive daily grind sugar scrub
10. Future primitive smoke and mirrors soap

I've loved all of the above ^ this year.

PearsMorgan · 16/12/2020 10:20

Thanks @Shrillharridan. Just been cheered by the arrival of Ffern winter. Have already drenched myself in Guerlain ginger piccante so proper sniffing will have to wait until tomorrow, but interesting so far - a warm Christmassy cardamom vibe with something green and outdoorsy lurking underneath.

MotherOfDragonite · 16/12/2020 12:25

Ooh @PearsMorgan I am slightly regretting pausing my Ffern subscription. I really couldn't justify more perfume. It does sound nice. I am revisiting Ffern Autumn 19 instead though and it is gorgeous (even more so than I remembered). I got a lot of compliments on it last winter.

MotherOfDragonite · 16/12/2020 13:42

Ok, here goes my 2020 Top of the Sniffs, in no particular order except for #1:

Monyette Paris (still, forever)
Tauerville Vanilla Flash
Shalimar Extrait
Sage Onyx (surprisingly, I liked this most in the summer)
Hammersmith Tea & Biscuits
Captured by Candlelight
Ffern Autumn 19
34 Boulevard St Germain
Haramain Million - Al Haramain (liked this in the early spring)
Lattafa Oud Mood

Shrillharridan · 16/12/2020 19:19

Got my sample of ylang-ylang espresso and YUCK
Cloying.
Sotd sueded oud

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 16/12/2020 21:24

SOTD Diptyque Eau Duelle.

A I’ve bought this year perfume-wise was Stella, and TF Soleil Blanc. Roll on warmer weather and smelling of beaches and sunshine again.

FloofyFragrantNotFestive · 17/12/2020 09:10

Sorry I have been MIA, I think a few of us have been - I am going to try and make more of a perfume effort in 2021!
I don't actually think I've bought anything new this year (apart from DH's gift of the little Chanel Exclusifs and some lovely samples from very kind Perfumistas Smile)

Top scents (I don't even think I have 10!) of 2020 that were "newish" and not old favourites though -

Chanel Beige - how I love this (I just remembered I did buy a tiny decant when mine ran out) Honey with flowers below it, it's interesting as it doesn't fall into a Summer or Winter category in my mind - this is rare and high praise for me!

All though the first very warm lockdown I wore a decant bottle of something I thought was something like Blue Fruit/Agave by Tom Ford but the label has come off and I can't find it online Confused It's definitely not the Jo Malone Agave one - although I wore it out of laziness and "can't be arsed to choose one" I have come to love it, it's quite masculine and very "cooling". Astringent. Yummy.

Chanel No. 22. I've gone from not really liking the ubiquitous Chanel "notes" (like you I think Shrill?) to having three in my top 10! This is a perfume to wear to bed. No idea why No. 5 is the most popular when this is so much better - I don't actually get the aldehydes, it's almost as elegant as 19 but in a warmer, cosy way.

No. 19. Calm and dignified, needs no expounding upon! (Especially as I am so inarticulate today!)

Blanc Polychrome Atelier des Ors (courtesy of lovely Teta, although I am a total ingrate now as I'm annoyed I can't afford a FB Grin) I take back everything I have said about rhubarb in perfume. Gorgeous. Thirst quenching. Longevity outstanding on my skin. (It seems to have gold flakes in the FB which is pretty, but for such an £££ perfume, the bottle actually reminds me of the L'Aimant one Grin)

I actually think that's it Blush I shall make more of an effort next year. I'm trying desperately to find some positives in life...as are we all no doubt! Thanks for all of us...and come back MIA posters - I actually feel more cheerful for spending time thinking about perfume and writing this post Smile

teta · 17/12/2020 10:28

New perfumes from this year I love are :

Masque Milano L' attesa - the most beautiful Iris.

Masque Milano Love Kills - Rose Geranium that's very pretty & not dramatic at all.

Atelier des ors - Riviera Drive, Nudas Veritas, Pomelo Riviera. Summery scents in a blue heavyweight bottle with real gold sprinkles. So pretty and literally like a perfume snowglobe.

Romilly Wilde Idle - Subtle curious raw Jasmine after an uplifting opening with a drydown with similarities to Baccarat Rouge. Possibly due to fir balsam or aroma chemicals.

Amouage Gold - I have samples of the vintage, extrait & the current Edp and I enjoy them all. It's my 'grown up' perfume.

Repeat loves are :

Ffern summer 2019 - bought a second bottle from the archive, as I wear it all year around.

Jo Malone Nutmeg & Ginger - bought decants & pp.

I'm going through a phase of wearing lighter perfumes & Rose/ Neroli at the moment.

Dislike my bottle of

Montale Roses Musk
All the oriental Atelier des Ors & Masque Milano's.

@Floofy nice to hear from you and I hope all is well. I know someone who sells decants of Atelier des Ors perfumes if you want a decant. She's lovely & very reasonably priced.

midcenturylegs · 17/12/2020 11:18

Hi all, I've not posted here in a long long time. Perfume seems to have been a forgotten joy in 2020!
But in clearing out the bathroom cabinet last night I came across a tiny bottle of Jo Malone's English Oak and Redcurrant and and it has completely bowled me over. Normally I go for the textbook chypres - Lutens' Amber and Feminite Du Bois etc. I don't have the words or enough knowledge to describe my new delight - would anything know anything about its notes etc? I have Xmas money to spend so am thinking of splashing out!

riotlady · 17/12/2020 19:38

Oooh my top smells of 2020 (with the caveat that I only really got into perfume in 2020!)

Rook Undergrowth (still haven’t worn it out but it makes me very happy to smell like a vegetable patch when I’m pottering round the house)
Swedoft Endless Happiness
Penhaligon’s Cairo
Phaedon Oliban
Black Swan Princess (by a Russian company I can’t remember the name of, it sounds like tacky tat but it’s the most lovely rose violet)
Guerlain Shalimar (turns out it’s a classic for a reason!)

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 17/12/2020 22:56

SOTD Black Opium. Lovely to see you, floofy.

FloofyFragrantNotFestive · 18/12/2020 12:33

@teta oh yes please to decant person details! I tend to buy small decants of most £££ things anyway as FBs are too expensive and it helps me expand my range to have "little and often" Grin

Polychrome Blanc was reminding of another perfume which I couldn't pin down but I think it may be one of the Atelier colognes or possibly an Aqua Allegoria scent. Can't remember their names though. Extremely different in terms of longevity though which is the factor that stops me investing in FBs of the above - I can't believe the longevity of the PB for such a citrusy scent. (And the long lasting dry down is much more of a beautifully blended "heavier" scent).

@midcenturylegs There are much more knowledgable people here who can probably advise more on the JM, but for "if you liked this, you'll like" and notes information/reviews, the website Fragrantica is also very useful.

I wish I liked Black Opium, it's very odd - in the past I've actually asked a couple of women what lovely perfume they are wearing and it's been Black Opium (just shortened that to the the initials and it was BO Grin) yet it smells very unpleasant on my skin Confused

Is it me or is coffee "a thing" generally this year in skin/hair care too? I've been getting a few little things for my DCs (so this is more the young women market) and lots seem to have coffee as an ingredient...
