For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Yes, the hormones will likely have had an impact on the resilience of your skin. Paring back seems a good move with that in mind.

I stay away from redermic c as it's fragranced, the Skinceuticals serum 10 is a low % (but still effective) vitamin c serum that's similar in consistency to the timeless, Sophie.

SophieLion · 17/11/2020 13:11

Thanks ninny and Bo. I will ask derm about vit C and the LRP one.

Isn't the skinceuticals one £££? I thought that was also 20% ascorbic acid or am I confused? Or is there a new one? Off to google

SophieLion · 17/11/2020 13:14

Just seen the 10 serum. It looks like a good option as it says it is for sensitive skin - still £££ though!!!

botemp · 17/11/2020 13:15

It is expensive but not as crazy the original vitamin c (which is called CE ferulic), Serum 10 is the same formula but only 10% L-AA, about half the price IIRC, which is still a fair bit, admittedly.

OP posts:
botemp · 17/11/2020 13:16

X post, you found it already. it's what my derm recommended when introducing Tret.

OP posts:
ilovemydogandmrobama2 · 17/11/2020 15:14

Just saw this. Has anyone tried it? A bit cheaper than the one I'm using at the moment.

this one

botemp · 17/11/2020 17:51

That looks interesting MrObama, I'm a bit confused though (although this may just be a Brexit thing) as I think in the EU TXA is limited to 2% (at least that's what Google tells me, and I can't get the Inkey list locally either where they otherwise sell the Inkey list, I'd have to order it from a UK based website, same goes for that the ordinary peel). Anyhow 5% is a good percentage according to this recently published article though they combined it with microdermabrasion interesting nonetheless as it used it on hands (I will now be slathering backs of hands generously too, not that there's anything there but maybe I'll delay something). I expect we'll be inundated with TXA products soon, just remember you heard it here first Wink

You're also using Hada Labo too right, Facetheory may be slightly cheaper but it's 30ml vs 200(IIRC) so can be a bit of false economy. It also has SAP as its vitamin C instead of MAP (in HL), SAP has its uses but not really of interest for pigmentation, moreso for acne, so I prefer HL (I also buy it for half the price of the facetheory one, so that probably helps too, especially since I use it on my legs and now possibly my entire body as well).

I've been using the Purito Green SPF50 for the last few days. Wow! I think I just find my favourite SPF. Do people use is all year round or is it an Autumn/Winter only?

Also, bought some of this hand cream from Face Theory . It's so lush, and you only need a tiny bit.

I've not looked at the FT website for years: I notice they have a Vitamin C and wondered if it was any good for those of you looking for a Timeless alternative.

Tsmummy08 · 23/11/2020 11:07

Hi Ninny! Yes, I love the Purito too - I can see myself using it all year as I'm dry, possibly without moisturiser in the summer. It's lovely, isn't it?

That hand cream looks good too... Can't comment on the FT vit C but I've been using the MAP form of vit C (Glossier) for a couple of months alongside tret and it's working well, no more red face! No idea if it's actually doing anything much though.... it's a pleasant layer of moisture so am sticking with it!

NinnyNewName · 23/11/2020 11:52

Yes, I really like it tsmummy.

I rewatched a Dr Sam and Dr Emma video about rosacea and they recommend Vit C once it's under control. Mine was not wildly out of control but I'm on Soolantra for another couple of months. I will start to thinking about which Vit C to try soon.

I had a G&T on Saturday night. A single. I don't really drink - I think it's been about a month since I last had a drink. OMG my face went bright red and felt like it was on fire, within half an hour. I did some reading and it seems you shouldn't drink within 2 hours of applying Soolantra. Well I'd applied it 10 hours previously. Won't be doing that again! Makes sense, but surprised the derm didn't mention it. Makes me wonder if I should just quit drinking. I'm not massively into it but I do like a nice fruity G&T now and then.

Also, went for a 5k run yesterday and was wondering if I'd end up redder than usual, but no, if anything I was a bit less red.

botemp · 23/11/2020 12:00

I like the Purito SPF mainly in the cooler months as it's a bit thicker.

The face theory vitamin c is a derivative so it gets tossed on the "other" pile. I did see Vichy now sells ampoules of L-AA with peptides, but it's really poor value for money and it's only 10% L-AA, think Skinceuticals serum 10 would probably come out cheaper...

OP posts:
ilovemydogandMrObama · 23/11/2020 16:14

Has anyone seen/tried the Allies of Skin Vit C? The packaging looks a lot like the Timeless you all seem to like.

botemp · 23/11/2020 16:20

It's another derivative, so it's on the "other" pile too. I think it's even the same derivative as the face theory one so it seems quite pricey for what it is.

OP posts:
botemp · 23/11/2020 16:25

This Korean vitamin c might be of interest except that it's by wishtrend who sell through very select channels so not as easily available everywhere. The site I've linked is local to me but they do seem to ship to the UK for €7.95 and free shipping over €70. I'll have to see if there's any reviews on the Asian beauty subreddit but going by the INCI it looks promising.

OP posts:
botemp · 23/11/2020 16:34

Ok, I need to do more research before posting, the tested pH is between 5-6, ergo no good. Ignore the wishtrend suggestion.

OP posts:
NinnyNewName · 25/11/2020 09:52

Apart from the scent (and alcohol) is the LRP Pure Vitamin C10 Serum worth considering? Or should it be on the "other" pile?

Aqua / Water, Ascorbic Acid, Cyclohexasiloxane, Glycerin, Alcohol Denat., Potassium Hydroxide, Polymethylsilsesquioxane, Polysilicone-11, Dimethicone, Propylene Glycol, Pentaerythrityl Tetraethylhexanoate, C13-14 Isoparaffin, Peg-20 Methyl Glucose Sesquistearate, Sodium Hyaluronate, Adenosine, Poloxamer 338, Ammonium Polyacryloyldimethyl Taurate, Disodium EDTA, Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid, Caprylyl Glycol, Laureth-7, Acetyl Dipeptide-1 Cetyl Ester, Xanthan Gum, Toluene Sulfonic Acid, Polyacrylamide, Tocopherol, Salicylic Acid, Parfum / Fragrance ( Fil B224007/0).

And also, this seems new from Neostrata:

www.neostrata.com/product/enlighten-vitamin-c-concentrate/F30097XA?bc=116,119,148

Unlike them to do a single active product:

www.neostrata.com/product/enlighten-vitamin-c-concentrate/F30097XA?bc=116,119,148

botemp · 25/11/2020 10:12

Not quite the "other" pile but they're both in silicon bases so they'd go in a subsection of L-AA of "stabilised formulas" which differ from the gold standard formulations and therefore less desirable by purists.

Did you mean to post the neostrata link just once or are there two different products as it's the same link twice?

OP posts:
NinnyNewName · 25/11/2020 10:15

No I meant to post it once. Doh.

In the Dr Sam/Dr Emma video they mentioned a specific Vit C which would be best for rosacea sufferers, but I can't remember what it was. I need to go back and watch.

ilovemydogandMrObama · 25/11/2020 12:08

Ninny Can I ask where you got the Purito? Think it was Sallie who linked to YesStyle where it's £10.00 or so a tube, but you have to buy £40.00 worth? Did I get this wrong?

NinnyNewName · 25/11/2020 13:43

I bought from Yes Style. I think you buy 4 to get free P&P. I was tempted lol. But I bought 2 and paid P&P.

Tsmummy08 · 28/11/2020 10:06

Hello all, I've just got the Yesstyle order made on Singles day (think there may be better deals this weekend though?)...

I've got the Hado Labo whitening lotion recommended by Bo - do I use that after my Missha first treatment essence in the morning, or should I use Hada Labo in the am and Missha in the evening?

Also ordered another Canmake blush (Elegant Rose - better colour for me than the one I got previously, love the texture), another Balancium ceramide cream (love it) and a LaNeige lip balm - tasty, but teeny tiny!!

I feel properly stocked up and need to put myself on a spending ban for the next few months... it's been a combination of Brexit panic, Covid sadness and thesis anxiety.... anyone else being a bit spendthrift at the moment?! Argh....

ilovemydogandmrobama2 · 28/11/2020 15:07

Have been using Medik8 Press and Glow for past week, although got the refill as didn't want to spend extra on a plastic pump.

Am quite impressed with it. A slight sensation after using it, but no redness or reaction so far.

Anyone else rather disappointed by lack of good Black Friday deals?

Was all a bit, 'meh...'

botemp · 28/11/2020 16:33

Currently extra 15% off on skincare on look fantastic, the nuface mini is the cheapest I've ever seen it with that extra discount. While tempted I just don't see myself having the energy to do it daily (currently on a medical diet and it's making me lethargic, unfortunately, probably not helped by being cooped up).

It has turned me into a spendthrift elsewhere. I'm also blaming that on the diet (it's psychologically a lot more difficult to adhere to than a weight loss diet as you're potentially ruining data with a slip up, although I'm probably taking it too seriously). Mostly hair care and clothes though and some electronics. I think some do better Cyber Monday days though so knows what that'll bring but me and my 12 tubes of toothpaste will probably be set for a while. I'm contemplating the red led mask from current body as it ticks all the science boxes and requires no effort from me but I've seen it cheaper on there so I'll wait it out.

Tsm, I think the two together may be a bit much but you're welcome to try it, the FTE is pretty light and so is the Hada Labo. I need to go look at the Canmake blushes again and see if my colour is back in stock.
