Wide leg trousers with trainers - office appropriate?

Clean, naice trainers. Not the manky asics you shuffle out to the bins in at bedtime.

Is it an office appropriate look?

This kind of thing but probably no jacket on an everyday basis. Love the look with a neat fitting Breton, white cotton shirt or fine knit, tucked in.

Am (hopefully 👏🤞) starting a new role (NHS) and just can't do formal office wear/heels. Dress code is not strict, just don't want to push it too far with the trainers.

If inappropriate, what other shoes would be good with this type of trouser?

Im a bit late to this.. but if its a new job I'd maybe be careful for first week and Wear black shoes.. then see what everyone else is wearing.maybe wear them in your 2nd week and ask a manager if they re suitable x

NHS? Completely fine (NHS consultant, that would have been fine in any of the 10+ trusts I've worked in over the years).

SingingSands · 28/07/2020 23:45

That's what half my office wears - I'm in law.

ChristmasCarcass · 28/07/2020 23:45

JacobReesMogadishu If that's a central London teaching hospital whose name rhymes with "pies", I'm told that was challenged and has been overturned.

JacobReesMogadishu · 29/07/2020 07:07

No, different hospital.....someone was certainly sacked over it. Was all in the local news at the time.

TheMagicTorch · 29/07/2020 07:17

I wear this for work in an office. Usually white Converse as opposed to athletic trainers

WingBingo · 29/07/2020 13:41

Never athletic trainers!

This is sort of the next generation debate on from ‘is it OK to wear jeans in the office?’. And my answer to that is always depends what type and how they are being worn. I work in HE admin.

Unfortunately in my view this look works best when the trainers are bright white, it brings the classy freshness.

The direction of workplace fashion has been towards more and more casual, and I think the pandemic will hasten that along. I personally think you can look more smart, professional and put together in less formal clothes, it’s the way you style them. I dislike that black jacket, colourful blouse, black trousers and black shoes look but it’s obviously formal enough for the office. I don’t like black full stop though.

On ballet flats, they are essentially the skinny jean’s twin so some argue they are out of date and others that the are a modern classic transcending trends. I don’t think it’s right to say no one wears them anymore and that they are unflattering on everyone as standard. I’m slim and narrow and bulky shoes can make me look clownlike. I’m aware I am not cutting edge in a pair but they are handy staples especially for between seasons

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 29/07/2020 14:51

this is officially against my work (NHS) dress code, but I have snuck the trainers back in recently. my excuse is that I'm brewing a bunion. I don't wear them for formal meetings with external visitors.

I wear box fresh white Stan Smiths that I keep for work, and have a second, much grubbier pair of Stans that I wear to the park and around town.

Alloverthegrapevine · 29/07/2020 14:52

When I was first on MN the S&B queens were horrified at the very idea of trainers for anything except serious exercise Grin

Pineappleheart · 29/07/2020 21:07

Yes, especially converse/vans style I started working in an office for the first time ever and was delighted when I found it’s a common place look - gone are the days when footwear can be dictated 😊

Mmpip · 30/07/2020 08:52

Defo yes. They look great with wide leg trousers, are comfortable and very much in trend with dress trousers. I wear black or white slip on Vans and they look great.....
