Wide leg trousers with trainers - office appropriate?

QuentinQuarantino · 22/07/2020 22:21

Clean, naice trainers. Not the manky asics you shuffle out to the bins in at bedtime.

Is it an office appropriate look?

This kind of thing but probably no jacket on an everyday basis. Love the look with a neat fitting Breton, white cotton shirt or fine knit, tucked in.

Am (hopefully 👏🤞) starting a new role (NHS) and just can't do formal office wear/heels. Dress code is not strict, just don't want to push it too far with the trainers.

If inappropriate, what other shoes would be good with this type of trouser?

Count - agree. Love my cigarette trousers with brogues. That's another staple look for me.

It's a no where I work.

HeyLala · 22/07/2020 23:20

I'm City Corporate and I wear that look.

So massive YES from me.

Just try it. They can only say no, and if they do get some thick soled brogues. That looks just as great.

Enjoy your new job x

PegasusReturns · 22/07/2020 23:22

If you’re not going to wear the jacket then it’s a completely different look, so I’d say no.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 22/07/2020 23:52

I’m a lecturer and wear black Stan Smiths or Veja Esplars to work regularly, often with wide legged cropped trousers, also with midi dresses and skirts. In winter a standard work outfit for me is a leather mini (ish) skirt with a polo neck jumper, opaque tights, and trainers. (I know MN hates tights and trainers.)

I do teach a creative subject though.

RomaineCalm · 23/07/2020 00:02

The picture that you posted is a really great look - I like it a lot.

The caveat for me is that it doesn't take very much for it to suddenly not look right... scruffy trainers, a floral jersey top not tucked in, trousers that are just on the wrong side of 'comfy', baggy cardigan instead of a jacket and suddenly it's not the same smart-casual office wear.

QuentinQuarantino · 23/07/2020 00:03

Judy I love that look and wear a lot of leather skirts in a/w but struggle with tights and trainers with skirts/dresses. The opaque black + the white of the trainers just clash too much for me. Usually end up going for biker boots.

Also love a leather pinafore dress.

Woah what's with the ballet flats hate?

If wearing jeans /trousers with a nice ish top it's my, and I'd say most people's go to. What else would you put with that bar sandals?

For loose t shirt and jeans maybe plimsolls or trainers.

Obviously this is in warm or hot weather. I'm in boots Oct/Nov to March/Apr.

QuentinQuarantino · 23/07/2020 00:08

Romaine I get your point. The emphasis is everything looking crisp and clean I think.

Suffice to say I don't do florals and I don't own a cardigan 😂 My only weakness is leopard print but I'm retiring that to evenings and weekends from now on.

I don't have loads of money to spend on clothes but I'm a very savvy bargain hunter and I've built up a decent wardrobe over the last few years via sales/charity shops/eBay.

Beautiful suit but not loving the footwear with it.

noodlezoodle · 23/07/2020 00:21

Definitely. And even more so when you said someone in the office wears Crocs to work!

I have some black leather Vans which look pretty smart and those are the ones I wear when I'm trying to pretend I'm not wearing trainers.

HerRoyalNotness · 23/07/2020 00:36

Yes that would be fine in my old office (multinational, billion dollar turnover)

doodleygirl · 23/07/2020 00:42

Its a yes from me, I love that look. I tend to wear Stan Smiths. Definitely no ballet flats, awful things.

Tanfastic · 23/07/2020 00:44

Trainers not allowed in our office. NHS,

ChavvySexPond · 23/07/2020 01:00

Big yay.

Is fashion, no?

Workwear doesn't mean a washable skirt suit and court shoes any more. Or the bloody sexy secretary look. Boak.

I think really plain trainers or patterned ones, but not locgoed and swooshed etc. Fashion trainers.

Bella2020 · 23/07/2020 03:39

I think it's a great look! In my last office (kinf of civil service, non customer facing) it would definitely have been ok. Go for it!

BlusteryLake · 23/07/2020 04:28

I wear that look at work all the time. It's a great balance between smart and practical.

SueblueNZ · 23/07/2020 05:49

I have a thing about white trainers/sandshoes/sneakers unless we are talking sports or summer attire - they are just so glaringly in your face. Whereas black or bronze or some more subtle colour or even pattern.

I think that providing the sneakers were not white/cream/really light in colour, the look with that pants outfit would be great.

I live in four different pairs of black leather sneakers, all with black soles but with points of difference such as laced, front zip, side zip, studs. And only ever with a black sole. I have a foot issue and walk strangely so hate drawing attention to my feet so cannot do high contrast like a black sneaker with a white sole. Quite apart from the back that if such shoes are worn while driving the white heels often get filthy.

SueblueNZ · 23/07/2020 05:54

I'm another hater ~ well, that's probably too harsh a word so 'big non fan' of ballet flats. They may look sweet but most styles have flimsy soles and offer no foot support.
I know a group of young women who wore ballet flats to school and for leisure for years ... many now have foot problems to some degree.

Nishky · 23/07/2020 06:02

@SueblueNZ could I ask which brands you wear. I don’t think white trainers look right so am looking out for black.

Off to look for black Stan smiths

ItWasNotOK · 23/07/2020 06:04

Surely it depends on the office?

I don't like the look, it makes your feet look tiny and weird.

HelpMeh · 23/07/2020 06:14

@ouch321 there's always been an irrational hatred for ballet flats on here, I don't find them offensive. However, I'm not a particular fan of trainers with tailoring/skirts/dresses and think brogues are an abomination, so I don't belong here. It would be a cold day in hell before I chose a brogue over a ballet flat.

OP the image you've posted looks fine, but I wouldn't get away with it where I work.

SueblueNZ · 23/07/2020 06:37

@Nishky
I am in NZ so the ones I like may not be available where you are but I tend to buy my sneakers/flats from sites such as Camper, Arche, Ecco and Kathryn Wilson. 'Sites' as in you can see the stock online but I would never buy shoes online; always need to try on and feel.

EasilyDelighted · 23/07/2020 06:45

I'm another who dislikes ballet flats, I can't wear them as they aren't padded or supportive enough. I can't remember the last time I saw anyone wearing them in my workplace, we're all in trainers, boots, sandals, loafers now.
