Wide leg trousers with trainers - office appropriate?

Clean, naice trainers. Not the manky asics you shuffle out to the bins in at bedtime.

Is it an office appropriate look?

This kind of thing but probably no jacket on an everyday basis. Love the look with a neat fitting Breton, white cotton shirt or fine knit, tucked in.

Am (hopefully 👏🤞) starting a new role (NHS) and just can't do formal office wear/heels. Dress code is not strict, just don't want to push it too far with the trainers.

If inappropriate, what other shoes would be good with this type of trouser?

@SueblueNZ Thank you- will have a look- pretty sure Ecco at least is available over here

XiCi · 23/07/2020 06:59

I honestly havent seen anyone wear a ballet flat for at least 10 years. Wouldnt even occur to me to wear them as they are so dated (and unflattering). I think trainers would be absolutely fine OP, certainly would in my office (financial services). Either that or thick soled loafers.

Butterfly44 · 23/07/2020 07:07

Nope. Trainers definitely not allowed whatever role you take in the NHS.

okiedokieme · 23/07/2020 07:14

Depends on where, I would never wear trainers myself to work, i tend to wear boots

Danglingmod · 23/07/2020 07:22

I've not seen anyone wear ballet flats in a decade! (And I never wore them at the time because I think they're bad for your feet and unflattering, but that's beside the point).

I love the look in the picture, OP, but only you know if it's acceptable dress code where you work. I think black or dark unbranded trainers would be better. I'd wear that suit with brogues as we definitely can't wear trainers to work in a school.

FattyBoom · 23/07/2020 07:40

Nope, trainers wouldn't be appropriate in our office either (and we are pretty relaxed) I usually go for something like butterfly twists which are comfy but more work appropriate

utterlynutty · 23/07/2020 07:57

Not too keen on the trainers.
I would opt for a nice pair of loafers or flat brogues.

Ginfordinner · 23/07/2020 07:58

I find ballet flats very impractical and uncomfortable.

I don't understand the love for white trainers. At 61 I think I would look rather ridiculous try too hard in them with a smartish trouser suit.

ThanksItHasPockets · 23/07/2020 08:06

It’s a great look but it’s really impossible for anyone to tell you if it’s appropriate without knowing your office. Paradoxically my sister could probably wear that to her City bank office on a day when she didn’t have client meetings but I couldn’t wear it to work as a secondary school teacher. I imagine lots of office dress codes will relax post-lockdown.

PegasusReturns · 23/07/2020 08:11

Do those of you who “haven’t seen anyone wear a ballet flat in years” ever leave the house?!

I get you hate them but up until we were all sent home to work they were still being worn extensively in offices across the city Hmm

Neolara · 23/07/2020 08:13

Last season, every pair of trousers on the Hobbs website wàs styled with white trainers. I reckoned if Hobbs was doing it, it's a trend that was considered smart enough for my work place. But your office might be different.

Iggly · 23/07/2020 08:13

Just wait and see until you start before making guesses. Yes it may look good but that’s not really the point.

Ginfordinner · 23/07/2020 08:16

Grin I still see people wearing them. Maybe those posters only consort with utra fashionable people. I'm afraid my look wouldn't pass muster with them either.
PurpleDaisies · 23/07/2020 08:17

I’ve always seen no trainers in the NHS. Don’t rewrite the dress code, wait and see. It’s a nice look but if you’re not allowed, you’re not allowed.

MotherMorph · 23/07/2020 08:20

My DD wears ballet flats to school, despite their impracticality. I dont consider wearing them as I'm a short-arse and need all the help I can get in the height dept from shoes!

Floisme · 23/07/2020 08:21

No-one would bat an eyelid in my workplace but that's not much help because the rules vary so much now.

The NHS isn't a single organisation any more is it, so wouldn't the dress codes vary even there? (I don't know, I'm just asking.)

I would just wait a few days watch what other people are wearing.

LunaNorth · 23/07/2020 08:22

I used to wear a suit and converse when I was teaching. I had a Dr Who thing going on.

Love that look.

Danglingmod · 23/07/2020 08:24

Not ultra fashionable, no. Probably the opposite.

I work in a school, so don't tend to see office workers. Colleagues wear brogues, loafers, boots, heels, things like chunky (DM) Mary Janes.

Weekends, when I'm out and about in town, people wear trainers, sandals, boots, brogues, loafers...

(Not that I look too much at other people's feet. I genuinely didn't think ballet flats were really on sale any more. I know secondary students wore them 8 plus years ago which stressed me out from an impractical point of view. Now, they wear DM shoes, loafers, chunky T-bars etc.)

Stringsattached · 23/07/2020 08:25

I would normally say no not appropriate but I think it’s such a mainstream look that it might be acceptable in some working environments.

I’m a teacher and wouldn’t wear trainers myself but It would depend on the school and how formal it was.

dudsville · 23/07/2020 08:28

The NHS is massively underfunded, it's not slick and corporate. Your choices are wonderful!

Alez · 23/07/2020 08:29

I like it and it would be fine in some offices, not in others. You have to judge it based on what other people wear! Or just wear the nice new white trainers and see what happens. People get used to stuff pretty quickly and it might be the new normal for your office.

Alloverthegrapevine · 23/07/2020 08:29

I like the look but I couldn't do it in my office.

My aspired look is as you describe but with brogue, but I can't find the wide leg trousers anywhere. Any tips?

CorianderLord · 23/07/2020 08:30

I've been doing this for years. Very stylish in a smart casual workplace

Fruityb · 23/07/2020 08:31

I have ballet flats with ankle straps that I bought from fitflop. They’re really cute and have a fab support in them. I see loads of people still wearing them!

I’d never be able to wear trainers (teacher) at my place. They’re very strict. I like this look but this is how I dressed casually for years! I still love wearing converse with this style - as someone else mentioned i felt quite Dr Who though drew the line at someone saying Sue Perkins... who I love but don’t really see as stylish sometimes!

Alloverthegrapevine · 23/07/2020 08:33

Aren't "ballet" flats just fairly ordinary court shoes without the heel? I agree the very flat ones were uncomfortable and cheap looking but flat courts are definitely still being worn everywhere and look better than heels people can't walk in, imo.
