Wedding guest help - yay or nay to this dress?

Dress in question!

I hate printed or vaguely 'occasiony' dresses of any kind and I'd actually wear this dress outside of a wedding setting. I've got a small wedding coming up end of August in a countryside venue and was wondering if this dress would look chic and not too casual.

Planning on wearing with some heeled gold sandals, gold jewellery and a little white crossbody bag.

It sounds like a very casual, low key affair. I imagine you need to take a coat/scarf/wrap plus sensible shoes. That's if it even happens in the current climate.

Ginfordinner · 19/07/2020 09:16

I think it's likely to be quite hot.

In the UK? Not necessarily. Last year August bank holiday weekend was unusually hot. Often, the weather at the end of August can be disappointing.

louisethedisease · 19/07/2020 09:17

I love it and would wear it myself. Good find

Dozer · 19/07/2020 09:19

Too casual and will crumple and look a mess within the hour!

TildaTurnip · 19/07/2020 09:21

I love it and given your updates about the bride’s dress and what others are wearing, I think perfect. It’s simple and classy and sounds as though would fit in well.

MoltonSilver · 19/07/2020 09:25

Why don't you buy it anyway and wear it casually for the moment and see if you still feel it's suitable? I suspect that the crumpling will prevent it from ever looking anything other than very casual but nothing ventured, nothing gained.

RuthW · 19/07/2020 09:29

Definitely not for a wedding. That's a very casual dress for everyday wear.

EinsteinaGogo · 19/07/2020 09:34

The way you've described dressing it up sounds lovely for a casual barn wedding, OP.

I went to a wonderful festival wedding last year - I wore a floaty dress with Converse - I was really happy with it.

As a previous PP suggested, I also had a large glitzy hair clip which would have been wrong elsewhere but somehow worked for the event..

For what it's worth - most guests 'understood' the venue meant a bit more casual with outfit but some didn't and wore typical wedding attire. It think they probably didn't feel very comfortable in the setting, sadly.

DameFanny · 19/07/2020 09:46

Can't help thinking the people worried about creasing have been wearing shoddy shirts Grin

sadie9 · 19/07/2020 09:54

If the MOB is wearing that white sundress, I think your first pick is perfect.

IAmOptimusPrime · 19/07/2020 10:06

I really like the first dress and you can make it more weddingy. This is also nice if you do want something more dressy?

kittensandcoffee · 19/07/2020 10:36

To those asking if I wear shirt dresses a lot - yes, I do, and I've never noticed any terrible creasing?!

SkiingIsHeaven · 19/07/2020 10:44

I'm sorry but I think it looks like a summer dressing gown. I wouldn't wear it. Sorry.

kittensandcoffee · 19/07/2020 10:49

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie Yes I do! I am grateful for the suggestions, I'm just extremely picky. I did order one someone suggested further up the thread.

DinosApple · 19/07/2020 10:58

I think the first dress would be perfect. Especially if you're willowy like the model.

I also like the John Lewis blue stripey number you linked to.

A few nice accessories and you're done.

feelingfragile · 19/07/2020 13:18

The one that @fastnfurious linked to was perfect, with wedge sandals or even boots like the model, perfect for a reception in a barn.

Inkpaperstars · 19/07/2020 14:00

What about this in the midnight blue OP?

Actually may be a bit restrictive for dancing. I would be tempted to go for something sleeveless, short sleeved or off the shoulder, maybe a wrap style fitted on top and very slightly looser below the waist, maybe knee length. You can take some sort of cover up in case cold but it will be freer and cooler for dancing.

kittensandcoffee · 19/07/2020 14:19

Oh I love that @Inkpaperstars!! In fact I love it so much I'm wondering if I could buy the white and dye it?!

OP posts:
kittensandcoffee · 19/07/2020 14:20

I prefer to not show arms or back, so it's perfect for me.

OP posts:
Inkpaperstars · 19/07/2020 15:07

Oh good! I am not an expert on dyeing clothes, hopefully someone is but I guess white is easiest to dye.

Inkpaperstars · 19/07/2020 15:09

Although it looks like only blue in stock right now in the smaller sizes.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 19/07/2020 15:11

That's lovely, Ink.

Not looked at all the links, so apologies if any overlap. Tried to go for a similar 'vibe' to the OP.

Paul Smith - similar vibe to the original but potentially smarter.

Club Monaco ditto

Personally I'd look appalling in both of those, and envy anybody who can pull them off.

Another Club M one

Shorter but cute

Whistles striped

ArtieFufkinPolymerRecords · 19/07/2020 15:30

How about this Other Stories.

Inkpaperstars · 21/07/2020 18:44

Just seen this while browsing which is somewhat similar to the wrap one, limited size/colour availability...
