Wedding guest help - yay or nay to this dress?

Dress in question!

I hate printed or vaguely 'occasiony' dresses of any kind and I'd actually wear this dress outside of a wedding setting. I've got a small wedding coming up end of August in a countryside venue and was wondering if this dress would look chic and not too casual.

Planning on wearing with some heeled gold sandals, gold jewellery and a little white crossbody bag.

I’m talking about the first dress btw. I also like the pink one

NameChange84 · 18/07/2020 22:27

I think many people lack imagination when it comes to weddings and wear boring, safe ‘weddingy’ choices

Appropriate for a wedding does not = boring or safe or lacking in imagination.

A giant shirt that will crumple easily and has no shape is not imaginative!

madwoman1ntheattic · 18/07/2020 22:30

The MOB dress is a sturdier fabric and will retain shape far more than the crumply shirt material of the ones you chose. It’s got very simple lines and can be accessorised to look boho and yet still weddingy. Same with the linen or the sun dresses other guests are going for.
The shirt dresses will look terrible in comparison - unless you starch them and stand up all day in an elegant pose. Anything that resembles sitting, bending down, eating, or dancing, and the buttons will gape and show your bra and you will look like you crawled out of bed. (Well. I would anyway!)
It might look ‘relaxed’ in a photo shoot, but it won’t translate well into being worn for what is supposed to be a relaxed, friendly celebration. Def no from me, sorry.

Gordonsgrin · 18/07/2020 22:32

Perhaps a lone voice of support but I love the first dress and can’t see why it isn’t suitable. And from all that OP has said I think even more so yes!

russetred · 18/07/2020 22:33

LOVE that FreePeople dress, bet it would be super-flattering on as well! Might buy it myself!

Comefromaway · 18/07/2020 22:35

It’s the fabric on that first dress that is so awful. It won’t hang right and will look crumpled.

KensalGreen · 18/07/2020 22:38

I love the original French Connection one! It’s gorgeous and really won’t look too casual with heels etc.

Comefromaway · 18/07/2020 22:39

The pink freepeople dress is lovely.

AnnaSW1 · 18/07/2020 22:40

I think it's way too casual

asparalite · 18/07/2020 22:47

Have a look at Zara website as there are a few shirt style dresses which might do.

Griefmonster · 18/07/2020 22:59

@kittensandcoffee I really like your original dress and know exactly what you're going for (those talking about "coming off the beach and slinging on that dress" in horror have I think, actually hit the nail on the head. I'm imagining a super slick version of sunkissed, beachy wave to your hair, maybe pinned up one side, gold accessories showing off your tan....) I'd be more likely to go for flat sandals for country wedding (although they could be bling - imagining those kind of frenchy, thin leather soles type with gold and or beads). I also wondered if you had looked at Cos as if you're of the the willow body type they have some brilliant cotton/linen simple styles usually in summer. Have a lovely time! Sounds like a great wedding!

kittensandcoffee · 18/07/2020 23:51

Well, I'm glad to have inspired some and horrified others - can't win them all Grin

Just one other thing — do you often wear shirt dresses?

I like them in principle, but I have two, and on both I've torn off buttons by sitting down and crossing my legs incautiously. I'm just wondering if that's a risk at a wedding when there's quite a lot of sitting!

katy1213 · 19/07/2020 00:31

It looks a bit creased even in the photo so I'm guessing the quality of the fabric won't be great. The other two dresses look much better.

Fungster · 19/07/2020 00:34

Too casual for me - too "business casual on a warm Friday"

TimeWastingButFun · 19/07/2020 00:52

Not a polished look for a wedding, imo.

Deadringer · 19/07/2020 01:09

110 quid for a glorified shirt? No way. It's too casual imo.

BitOfFun · 19/07/2020 01:18

I like it- as you plan, with the right accessories you could dress it up.

Allmyeye · 19/07/2020 01:35

I think it is too casual and will crease really easily. Sorry.

Girlinglasses · 19/07/2020 01:46

I think the first one is the nicest, maybe casual for some weddings but as you say, if it is quite casual then it would be perfect. I also love a skirt/cami combo if you are looking for something that can be worn again! Skirts like this can be dressed up or down and can be styled in loads of ways, cami and heels for an occasion, string top/cropped top and sandals for holidays, T-shirt and trainers for casual, With white for summer, with black for winter! You can get loads of wear out of them :)

Ooh I really like the pink.

DidoLamenting · 19/07/2020 06:24

@kittensandcoffee

To those suggesting jumpsuits/trousers - I like them fine, I just don't like occasion-y outfits in general. On this occasion, I think a dress would be better though, I think it's likely to be quite hot. Also I was hoping to buy a dress I could wear IRL too so it's not a waste of money.
It's much nicer than a jumpsuit or trousers. It's a dress you can dress up on the day and you'll get a lot of wear out of it. Go for it.

The comments about it getting wrinkled during the day are ridiculous- who cares if it does? All eyes won't be on you and many, many dresses aren't going to be as pristine at the end of the day as they are at the beginning.

DidoLamenting · 19/07/2020 06:32
How about this? www.silkfred.com/boutiques/ruby-rocks/clothing/polka-dot-shirt-wrap-dress-purple
That's awful. It looks really cheap and it's a horriblecolou. The OP's choice is much nicer.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 19/07/2020 09:01

MrsA - that looks, imvho, like a nurse's uniform. Not nice.

Saying that concerns about creasing are ridiculous, is, frankly, ridiculous. I don't care about staying fully pristine, but in the dress in the OP I'd look like I'd been dragged through a hedge backwards within minutes.

OP - are you actually wanting links to other dresses?
