What's the next jeans shape going to be?

I've been wearing skinnies for years but think they will start to look a bit dated this winter. Any thoughts on what the next shapes will be? My daughter says mum jeans. Can anyone explain the difference between "mum", "boyfriend " and " straight " please?

Skinnies have been 'out' in fashion terms for ages, but they're one of those trends that actual people weren't ready to give up when they stopped being fashionable. 'Mum jeans' are high on the waist, loose but not oversized like boyfriend jeans. They look great if you're thin but make you look bigger than you are if you're not, which is why women won't be tempted out of their skinnies - and if they are, it'll probably be for straight, which is quite a lot more flattering.

Mywifeandkids1 · 16/07/2020 08:39

I won’t be giving up my skinnies! I’m too big for mom jeans (Size 12) but I do love them

bronzedgodesswannabe · 16/07/2020 08:40

I love the look of looser jeans but I just don't think I can pull them off!
😭

evod · 16/07/2020 08:45

I changed to straight leg jeans years ago. They are so much more flattering on me. I am also wondering what jeans to buy next. I usually buy levis as I find they fit me well and are very comfy.

doadeer · 16/07/2020 08:50

I moved to mum jeans about two years ago they are more comfortable for sure. I like the topshop ones. I still wear skinny levis occasionally but they feel so tight!

The style I see younger people wearing are really wide almost combat style like All Saints from the 90s!

I don't know if this will be the next craze. I think skinnys have been officially "out" for years now but that doesn't mean you shouldn't wear them!

Nanalisa60 · 16/07/2020 08:50

I think people Should wear the jeans that look good on there body shape, I stoped being a fashionista years ago and only were things that look good on me, I have my own style and stick to clothes that suit me not what the fashion industry tells me what I should be wearing.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 16/07/2020 08:50

Balloon jeans? Or wide-legged straight jeans. I’m glad to see the back of skinnies - I have chunky thighs and slim calves and ankles, so skinnies do me no favours at all. The first time I tried on wide-legged straight jeans after years of skinnies I was blown away by how much better I looked. Also, with skinnies all tops were loose and boxy and hung straight down from my boobs hiding my waist. With looser jeans tight tops look good, which is way more flattering on me.

TableNiner · 16/07/2020 08:56

Mom jeans make most people look like they are wearing a nappy underneath. Straight are easier to wear but still not as easy as skinnies, particularly for winter. I wear jeans most days and personally I think jeans are so ubiquitous in themselves, you can wear whatever style you like, they’ve all been done, they all come around in cycles. Cropped look most modern at the moment imo but not ideal if you have short legs. Just nothing too distressed/stonewashed I’d say.

Loveinatimeofcovid · 16/07/2020 09:04

I think we should just decide that high waisted flares are the next thing and make it happen. They’re by far the more flattering and most comfortable.

PersonaNonGarter · 16/07/2020 09:13

High waisted flares are the next thing. The problem is they are not very flattering unless you are long and thin.

Skinnies are very over. Cropped mom jeans are lovely (barrel jeans from whistles for example) but I think hems will start to drop.

I’ve just bought some high waisted straight full length jeans for autumn. I’ll probably wear them folded up at first.

Hardbackwriter · 16/07/2020 09:22

I am really desperate for hems to drop - it's really hard to get full-length jeans at the moment, but I'm 5'10 and just look like I accidentally bought something too short in cropped trousers.

onlyconnect · 16/07/2020 09:32

I have summer chino type trousers that my daughter says are mum shaped and they do suit me although I'm a size 12. I like high wasted flares best.
How do mum or straight jeans go with ankle boots? I was about to buy some new expensive ones but might need a rethink.

This ^^ I hate the "fashion victim" look. My last two jeans purchases were slim straight leg jeans, which are more flattering on me than skinnier.
Ginfordinner · 16/07/2020 09:39

Skinnies!
Blooming auto correct!

Solaran · 16/07/2020 09:50

Well, IMO skinnies have been out for quite a while now - felt they’ve looked quite dated for a couple of years. But each to their own and buy what suits you etc.

I like straight leg jeans at the moment, but also high waist crop flares.

Where are people buying their high waisted straight jeans?

motherofgod2 · 16/07/2020 10:21

I think straight leg but looser and full length , like this style.

I've been wearing slim/straight jeans rolled up or ankle length for the last few years now. I have quite muscly calves and skinny jeans do me no favours. I tried an old pair on to see if I wanted to keep or charity shop and they felt so restrictive.

What's the next jeans shape going to be?
SephrinaX · 16/07/2020 10:24

Jeggings for life!

Ellewoods20 · 16/07/2020 10:25

Does it really matter what the next trend is? Wear what you feel comfortable in. If skinny jeans aren't flattering on you, don't wear them.

IndecentFeminist · 16/07/2020 10:26

I love the look of those, but not sure whether they'd be flattering on a 16/18?

What to do about ankle boots is my question too.

I've been wearing my mom jeans rolled up with converse but don't know if you can wear them with ankle boots.

I'm switching between barrel leg (Whistles - wearing today) straight leg, and cropped wide leg. I like it that there's no single dominant style at the moment - it's unusual and I really think we should be making the most of it.

I wear them all with either plimsols or brogues. When the weather turns colder I'll switch to lace-up ankle boots. I tend to stick to straight leg in winter.

I've tried both straight leg and girlfriend and can honestly see little difference - I think it's mostly marketing talk.

I've kept one pair of skinnies which I tried again recently and, for what it's worth, not only are they unflattering on me (which I knew already) I thought they were starting to look dated too.

Hardbackwriter · 16/07/2020 11:22

All being well I'll be in maternity jeans for the winter (I'm 10 weeks now) so I'll have to stay in skinnies as that was all you could buy last time I had a baby (2017) and I'm not buying new ones! I do agree they look very dated, though. I do think that it's tricky to do the ankle length thing in winter - it looks stylish in photos but not so much in motion/real life and even less so if the two inches of leg on display is blue!
