What's the next jeans shape going to be?

I've been wearing skinnies for years but think they will start to look a bit dated this winter. Any thoughts on what the next shapes will be? My daughter says mum jeans. Can anyone explain the difference between "mum", "boyfriend " and " straight " please?

Oh, and the long wide leg are beautiful - like 70s flares but less thigh-hugging than I remember from the late 90s.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 16/07/2020 22:23

mary I wear DMs with balloon and barrel legs, as well as Stans, Vejas, and Continental 80s. I have the Levi’s balloon legs in the pleated and not pleated front both.

These are my DMs, I have both the black and oxblood.

It's an Aussie site but they ship international. Jeans sit perfectly on the hip bone or below

@AuldReekieCreakymemory

The link above is a great site

What ever the next style is, l hope it is not the so called “high rise” that comes up to your tits! So uncomfortable when you sit down. Sad

TheHoundsofLove · 17/07/2020 07:08

I love Mom jeans and find them really flattering, but only if slightly rolled up and with bare ankles. I haven't yet found a single pair of boots that look good with them. I also think it's quite hard to find a coat that goes with them, due to the general bagginess/casualness. I agree that skinnies look a bit dated now, but will probably still wear them in the autumn and winter due to the coat and boot issue.

High rise come up to just below my waist on me, and I find them far more comfortable than low rise.
Sooverthemill · 17/07/2020 07:27

@Lostinengland I have calf length boots which are good for wide cropped, that's why I got them

lindyloo57 · 17/07/2020 09:14

Starlightlady are you maybe short waisted, I am petite and this is the problem I have, high rise are just too high for me.

MaryLennoxsScowl · 17/07/2020 10:43

My 20-y-o DMs gave up the ghost last winter, Judy - I was worried new ones could never be the same but perhaps I just need some!
I’ve remembered I wore mom jeans with Dune army boots a lot too, and with a pair of slim leather pointy flat boots - I think the trick may be to get boots that come in tight at the ankle. The pointy boots have started to look dated now though (they are three years old).

dontgobaconmyheart · 17/07/2020 11:46

IMO skinnies have been dated a couple of years- they still look good on though, you suit what you suit don't you.

I switched to slim fit straight leg, or slim fit mom jeans (both high waisted) and haven't looked back once. They're comfortable, look cool and go with virtually everything. Footwear wise the same, great with sandals, heels, trainers and in autumn I roll up with biker boots and tuck a shirt or jumper in.

I always go for a slim fit because the straight leg otherwise is a pain. You can't roll it up for boots so it is way less versatile. Sadly I think looser denims will be the next trend, wider legs, flares etc. I'm petite of frame so I won't be participating as it won't suit.

Floisme · 17/07/2020 11:59

Another reason why I like a looser/wider leg is that I can wear different tops. WIth skinnies I was restricted to oversize, slouchy tops to try and balance out the look. Getting dressed was starting to bore me senseless. It was also drowning out my waist which is actually quite decent. Now I'm wearing shorter, fitted jumpers and tucked in shirts again and I feel like I've got half my wardrobe back - which I have.

GinWithASplashOfTonic · 17/07/2020 12:04

I tend to go for straight leg, with a high waist.

I am soooooo happy that skinnies are on the way out! They did nothing for my whale sized thighs and it was so hard to find anything but skinny jeans in the shops.

squashyhat · 17/07/2020 12:14

@Ellewoods20

Does it really matter what the next trend is? Wear what you feel comfortable in. If skinny jeans aren't flattering on you, don't wear them.
This. I want jeans which fit me. I don't care what style they are called.
TheCanyon · 17/07/2020 12:31

I want it to be low waisted flares that aren't ten feet long.

Bluntness100 · 17/07/2020 12:48

I’m also of the opinion that oretty much all jeans are fashionable at the moment, maybe with the exception of boot cut, and it’s really what about suits you.

In my opinion the bigger the jeans the bigger you look, they are not a material that skims the body, for me personally I’ve moved from skinnies, although will still wear them to straight or relaxed skinny.

Mom jeans, barrel leg, wide leg etc are not really flattering unless on someone very, very slim. For the rest of us they just add inches.

Mesmeraid · 17/07/2020 13:44

Straight leg/Levi 501 fit are the style which is current/next. I don’t find it a flattering shape and a lot of the current wide leg and ankle skimming styles of jeans and trousers just look very ugly on most people. Especially when teamed with chunky ugly sandals.

I think bootcut will be making a comeback soon.

Bootcut, high waisted flares and skinny jeans are generally the most flattering.

Ginfordinner · 17/07/2020 14:01

I agree with @Bluntness100. Apart from bootleg there doesn't seem to be a "fashionable" shape for jeans. Young people still wear skinny jeans. DD is 20 and wears skinny jean, mom jeans and wide leg jeans as the mood takes her, and none of them look dated?

Who are the fashion police who say that skinny jeans look dated anyway?

My preference is for straight leg as they are more flattering on me than skinny (and more comfortable).

Floisme · 17/07/2020 14:14

I'm one of the posters said I thought skinnies were starting to look dated. It's an opinion, not an instruction.
I don't think young people are particularly interested in fashion at the moment and I don't look to them for a lead.

Bluntness100 · 17/07/2020 14:26

Young people have always been interested in fashion and always will be. Only a minority are not.

Floisme · 17/07/2020 14:28

I don't agree. This generation don't seem half as interested in it as mine was. They've found other ways to make us feel irrelevant.

Ginfordinner · 17/07/2020 18:10

DD isn't a fashion sheep. She obviously dresses with a nod to what is current, but she has found her own style. During her first year at university she wore what she felt comfortable in when she went out rather than the ubiquitous little dress that barely covers the backside.

During lockdown she has tie dyed and embroidered her clothes so that she has an even more unique look. It suits her.

Bejazzled · 17/07/2020 21:40

I’ve always gone for a ‘relaxed skinny’ (aka slim leg) which suit me better than a traditional skinny. I like the Donna Ida high waist slim boy fit as well.

What's the next jeans shape going to be?
kakak · 17/07/2020 21:47

We all have our favourite pair of jeans
For a about 3 years I was loving littlewoods ripped Jean's until they must have changed their supplier as they dont fit me the same.Wink
I've got a pair of Tesco ripped jeans in a lighter wash that I prefer now and they are cheaper then the littlewoods brand so a win win Smile

GrumpyHoonMain · 17/07/2020 21:50

I like short wide leg (high waist) jeans, slim boyfriend, and straight cut.
