What's the next jeans shape going to be?

I've been wearing skinnies for years but think they will start to look a bit dated this winter. Any thoughts on what the next shapes will be? My daughter says mum jeans. Can anyone explain the difference between "mum", "boyfriend " and " straight " please?

@Nanalisa60

I think people Should wear the jeans that look good on there body shape, I stoped being a fashionista years ago and only were things that look good on me, I have my own style and stick to clothes that suit me not what the fashion industry tells me what I should be wearing.
Completely agree I wear low rise flares. That's what suit me. I literally shop in the same place I did 15 years ago, same brand as they are the perfect jeans on me, size and cut. They haven't changed and I'm so glad for it. Colours and detailing has changed over years but not the actual jeans

I've tried on skinnies, I looked so weird. Mum jeans, boyfriend would look so bad on my shape and size, would swamp me. Even straight don't suit.

IHeartSusanDey · 16/07/2020 12:37

No jeans are more flattering than flares if you are slim. I love them and how good they look in a real retro way.

nzeire · 16/07/2020 12:49

After skinnies, I wore wide leg, crop, barrel, boyfriend, mom... and last week bought some skinnies!

Wear all, apart from the mom, I so wanted them to work, but nope, awful on me!

beatrixpotterspencil · 16/07/2020 13:32

at this point, after watching this argument go back ad forth for about 4 years now ...........I'd say almost any jeans shape is in style, skinnies aren't going anywhere, and why do people look to adolescents to guide them on what is happening? I don't even think younger people give a shit anymore, they're more about brands, I think, although they do seem to like a bit of 90's stuff.

what I DO think has sailed out of the harbour are angel boots.

beatrixpotterspencil · 16/07/2020 13:35

ankle boots! haha

Sooverthemill · 16/07/2020 13:50

I read somewhere that any shape but full length are going to be fashionable ( ie pushed like mad) for AW. I'm short so will stick to cropped!

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 16/07/2020 14:07

I’ve been wearing the Whistles barrel legs since they came out - 2018? - and have them in light blue, indigo, and black. I recently bought Levi’s balloon jeans which are similar in shape.

In summer I wear them with trainers, occasionally brogues, and in winter with DM Church boots, which are kind of a cross between a shoe and a normal DM boot. I wear knee-high socks underneath when it’s cold - as long as they are a contrasting colour it still gives the illusion of the “ankle gap” you get with bare legs.

BinkyBoinky · 16/07/2020 14:58

I'm still in skinnies, I don't know what other styles suit me. I have a pair of girlfriends but tbh they make me feel fat. I haven't bought new jeans in a couple of years now so am still in my old (very worn) pairs and I do feel a bit dated now.

MikeUniformMike · 16/07/2020 15:31

I wear straight leg or skinnies. Not cropped.

Teenagers are wearing mom jeans.

TempestHayes · 16/07/2020 16:15

I love skinnies because I can wear them with boots. Pop straight legs on and lovely autumn boots are off the menu.

There's the thing where you have your jeans stop an inch above ankle boots, but I'm only 5 foot 2 and I haven't got the space for those kinds of shenanigans.

I might have a bash at straight and see how they look, but I just don't feel they help with the short thing.

AuldReekieCreakymemory · 16/07/2020 16:28

@Squeekums - can I ask where you get those?

onlyconnect · 16/07/2020 16:49

I've just had a look at the Whistles barrel jeans that a couple of you have mentioned. I like the look of them. Are they comfortable? I see there's no stretch. Also how's sizing?
In the description it says they look good with ankle boots but I'm not sure.

@motherofgod2

I think straight leg but looser and full length , like this style.

I've been wearing slim/straight jeans rolled up or ankle length for the last few years now. I have quite muscly calves and skinny jeans do me no favours. I tried an old pair on to see if I wanted to keep or charity shop and they felt so restrictive.

I had an identical pair. They were Fatface men’s, nicked from a boyfriend. So I guess boyfriend jeans.

I’m an apple but although my hips are small I’ve got things and chunky legs. This shapes makes my stomach smaller look in proportion to my lower half.

lindyloo57 · 16/07/2020 18:12

Still in skinnies but would love a new style, tried cropped wide, they swamp me, mum Jean's I feel fat in them, what style would suit a size 10 slim hips not so slim waist, 5ft 3 tall. I would like the fit to be the way skinnies fit on the body, and looser leg .

ThursdayLastWeek · 16/07/2020 18:16

I wear Taiki jeans by Monki. High waist, balloon leg.

It really doesn’t matter if they 'flatter' or 'make you look bigger'. You don’t have to dress for some imaginary male gaze. Wear what makes you happy!

SkinnyChicky · 16/07/2020 18:35

Never had the interest to observe the "in" shape. I just tend to go into a shop and buy the ones I like the most.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 16/07/2020 18:58

@onlyconnect I had to size down in them. I’m usually a 20 which is a 28 waist in Whistles, but that was huge - mine are all a 27. I find them really comfy, and they work well on my shape - small waist, bigger hips and bum. I think they might not be so great on a more apple shape.

I don’t have ankle boots other than Chelsea boots so not sure on that front.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 16/07/2020 18:58

Oh. I am usually a 10, not a 20.

DinosaurOfFire · 16/07/2020 20:14

@squeekums Please please let me know where you buy low rise flares! I love them but have one last pair that are definitely falling apart now. They are the best jeans style.

Patsypie · 16/07/2020 20:19

@beatrixpotter...how the hell can ankle boots be out of fashion!

nanbread · 16/07/2020 20:39

@Floisme where did you get your cropped wide leg high waist jeans from please? Looking for some but struggling to find something I like

Floisme · 16/07/2020 21:15

nanbread they're Uniqlo - from last autumn's U range. I'm not sure if they're still in stock but they tend to do something similar most seasons.

only I found the Whistles barrel legs more true to size than Judy but they were second hand so maybe they'd already shrunk a bit. Yes I find them comfortable. Mine have 2% lycra so enough to help the fit but they don't feel stretchy. I've struggled to find ankle boots that work with them but I've just bought some in the Toast sale that are a fraction higher than standard. So I hopefully I can wear them through winter without the chilly ankles!

dudsville · 16/07/2020 21:18

Tapered with front pleats.

Lostinengland · 16/07/2020 21:24

The thing is - the only other kind of boots are knee highs and over the knees, or cowboy. And all of those you can only wear with skinny!

I am doing barrel, trying to lose five pounds to get into two gorgeous pairs of high waisted flares - but in winter you really need ankle boots for both these things!

Am plotting to get knee high suede boots and am going to rock grey skinnies (topshop Jamie) if I do.

MaryLennoxsScowl · 16/07/2020 21:29

I have ditched skinnies. I now have cropped wide, cropped kick flare, full length wide leg, Mom, straight, barrel, balloon and pleated jeans. I’ve been buying different styles from skinnies for four years now and have accumulated a lot! They’re mainly high-waisted. I think high-waisted straight look incredible - mine aren’t cropped but I think they perhaps should be, but they don’t roll up nicely as they’re too wide at the gems compared to mom jeans. My other favourite is the barrel ones. They make everything look more modern. I’ve had them since autumn and I love them. I’ve only just bought the balloon and pleated ones and haven’t worn them much yet. Every single pair of the above go with plimsoles, Stan smiths and vejas but I haven’t had luck with boots yet - more practice is required. Oh, the wide-leg cropped work with DMs.
