Over 40’s top 5 make up must haves

If you are over 40 what 5 make up items can you not live without (slightly dramatic).
I need a refresh. Money no object.

OP posts:

@likeamother it’s a corrector - it looks too thick to work but it’s been a game changer for my dark circles. I am a tightwad (despite what my top 5 items say!) so something has to really earn its money - the becca undereye does that for me - not found a dupe yet and happy to pay 20 quid for something that easily lasts 6 months and hides my lack of sleep.

peaceanddove · 06/07/2020 20:23

Benefit Bad Gal Bang mascara, gives me stripper lashes that look super fluttery.

Biore Watery Essence SPF 50+. Disappears into my skin, so light, can even use it on and around my eyes, never stings. Make sure you order it directly from Japan though, to avoid the fakes.

Genuine Shu Uemura eyelash curlers. Not cheap, think I paid about £30 for them, but they're amazing.

IT Cosmetic brow pencil in Universal Taupe, also doubles as a flattering eyeliner.

Blistex Intensive Repair Balm.

ChristmasFluff · 06/07/2020 20:34

L'Oreal Telescopic mascara - I used to use Lancome definicils, but this is cheaper and I think better.
Number 7 Lift and Luminate foundation. But I use the Number 7 Beautifully Matte Mousse foundation for going out as it has more coverage.
Soap and Glory Sexy Mother Pucker lip gloss - I wear it over any lipstick when I'm going out
MyFace eye pencil - but MyFace cosmetics are discontinued, so I'm saving my last one for special occasions and using the Lancome one - almost as soft.
If anyone knows a decent substitute for MyFace Blingtone eyeshadows, I'd love to hear it - I love glitter for a night out.

wizzbangfizz · 06/07/2020 20:37

A good primer

HuckfromScandal · 06/07/2020 20:38

Factor 50 sun cream
Find one you like and wear it EVERY DAY

Every else is a nice to have.
But please put sunscreen at the top of the list.

IlonaRN · 06/07/2020 20:55

I find it's most important to wear colours that suit.
I have cool undertones, so need pinky colours rather than peachy ones.

  • Navy, grey or plum mascara (No7 and Jane Iredale do navy, Dr Hauschka do all three)
  • Navy eyeliner (Dr Haushka one is my favourite as it is a dark navy rather than bright)
  • Pink blusher, no sparkle (I use Lily Lolo atm)
  • Cool pink or mauve lipstick (my all-time favourite is a Clinique one that has been discontinued!)
  • Cool grey or lilac eyeshadow (I use Odylique and Lavera, respectively)
XingMing · 06/07/2020 20:57

One Powder Wonder. Beauty Pie. Sets and stabilises everything, without changing colour. And unifies all the previous preparation. Makes naked skin look good. On multiple repeat buy list and my sister now swears by it too. And she was once a beauty consultant, so highly critical. Make life easy.

Todaywewilldobetter · 06/07/2020 21:04

I will die on the IT cosmetics CC cream hill. Spf and lovely coverage that doesn't sit in your creases

likeamother · 06/07/2020 21:05

The only things I buy on repeat are Estée Lauder double wear, Nars radiant long wear (I alternate the two between day and nights out) Nars blusher and Kiko mascara.
I bought an urban decay naked basics pallete 2 years ago which is still going strong, that's my favourite eye shadow so far and I will be buying again when it's finished.

247SylviaPlath · 06/07/2020 22:54

@likeamother hope you get on well with it! I received my first one in a cult beauty goody bag gift with purchase and have worn it every day since I first tried it (with some scepticism) Use sparingly and pat in with your finger, the oils I think help it sink in then go in sparingly with your concealer (you’ll need less than you’ve been using before). It has genuinely been the best new thing I have introduced to my daily routine. Grin
