AnUnlikelyWorldofInvisibleShad · 04/07/2020 19:24

I am 34. I mostly shop at:

Sainsburys: long sleeve tops and long length cardigans
Lucy and Yak: dungarees mainly but also some trousers and tops recently
Saint and Sofia: trousers
Bam: tops (both short and long sleeve) and also have a gorgeous sweatshirt and seamless hoodie from them

I've also recently bought some dungarees from Run & Fly.

Nearly 50- wear what I want!
Love Top Shop, Zara and Asos. When I have a bit more cash- and other stories and me and m

Kenworthington · 04/07/2020 19:30

I think all the shops you’ve mentioned are super frumpy. I’m mid 40s and wouldn’t be seen dead in sea salt or joules. Sorry. I really like H&M , cos, kin (John Lewis), topshop and evening some urban outfitters. I also like small independent boutiques. you’re young! You can and should shop wherever you fancy of course. But you asked.

swishswooshswash · 04/07/2020 19:37

I'm 40. Mainly shop at

Hush
Cos
Uniqlo
H&M
The odd bit from M&S

Not a big list but that's mainly because I have three kids and no time

I like neutral/muted colours, relaxed style with a bit of tailoring and as I've got older I want natural fabrics and a good cut.

In my head Joules, Boden, Seasalt can feel frumpy but then again I'm not really into pattern and am top heavy so cleaner lines/tailoring/muted colours balance that out.

swishswooshswash · 04/07/2020 19:38

Oh and in my 20s I shopped anywhere and everywhere. And topshop was everything.

XingMing · 05/07/2020 19:11

I probably wouldn't wear a band or brand T shirt any longer, because I am 63, but I sit here typing this wearing a cropped hoodie, over a Tesco vest and posh jeans, rolled three times. Without seeing my face, I bet most people could not guess my age.

XingMing · 05/07/2020 19:16

At least, not from a rear view.

damnthatanxiety · 05/07/2020 20:22

OP, a lot of brands like Joules, Boden, Seasalt, White Stuff etc have a frumpy VIBE.Not necessarily because they are frumpy but because they are the go to labels for middle aged and older women who try to look fashionable and as a result, they just scream 'middle aged'. So it is partly because some of their stuff is frumpy and it is partly because frumpy women wear them so they are frumpy by association ifkwim

MushyPeasAreTheDevilsFood · 05/07/2020 20:28

Early 20’s i favoured river island and top shop. I also had a number of Laura Ashley Items because i worked there

Late 20’s / 30’s was Oasis and Warehouse

Now early 40’s and i still like oasis, H&m, i really like izabel, And i also have some boden pieces. In the northern town where i live we basically have debenhams. We dont have a zara or many other shops mentioned above.

CocteauTwin · 05/07/2020 21:46

I'm 56 and prefer natural fibres as much as possible. I'm short, size 18-20 and like clean and simple cuts, but am not averse to the odd pattern.. My favourites of late are:

Cos
Uniqlo (main range and their collaboration with Marimekko)
ASOS - although I'm well out of their age range their own brand stuff can be surprisingly good, like 100% cotton sweatshirts
Weekday Prime tees (from ASOS)
M&S
Hush
Levis
Monki
H&M
Seasalt - some of it isn't to my taste but the quality is excellent and there are some gems to be had
Love & Squalor - a Glasgow based brand where everything is hand made to order

elastamum · 05/07/2020 22:10

56 and now mostly wearing very expensive outdoor gear. In my defence I live rurally and spend a lot of time with my horses and dog or walking with DP. Since lockdown I haven't been near my office and I don't wear anything that isn't comfortable.

Floisme · 06/07/2020 10:27

I am rather concerned that, as an older woman who still enjoys fashion, I might be guilty of making my favourite shops 'frumpy by association'.
What will happen to them? Will they get denounced on Twitter and sent to fashion gulag?

Astrabees · 06/07/2020 12:49
  1. Whistles, Top Shop (jeans) Toast, Oasis - sadly defunct,, Hush, Brora.
Bella2020 · 06/07/2020 14:10

I'm 50. Most of my clothes are from Boden, M&S and Dorothy Perkins. I also like Jigsaw snd Hobbs.

I try to dress quite classically, with a bit of colour and maybe little twists here & there.

Mostly I shop online as I'm disabled and struggle to get our clothes shopping. I also use the Lookiero and Stitchfix personal styling shopping services. I think they're absolutely great.

foxtiger · 08/07/2020 21:14

I am 54.

I don't really shop anywhere at the moment for obvious reasons, but I like TKMaxx, Peacocks (which I think are better than Primark for basics like jeans, leggings and t-shirts), slightly surfy brands like Seasalt and Mantaray, and lately I have been buying more lagenlook like clothes from the brand Made In Italy, which you mainly find in local independent shops. Sometimes H&M - I think they are especially good at jumpers. I used to like New Look but I haven't seen anything I really liked in there for a long time. I'd wear a lot of Masai, Oska and Marimekko if I was rich. Favourite shoe brands are Fly, FitFlop, Clarks and Ruby Shoo.

My style fluctuates between surfy/outdoorsy, slightly hippyish and attempts at Euro-chic. Last year I was rocking a more retro ladylike style for a while but I soon got bored with it.

I'm 42 and shop in
H and m
Zara
SilkFred
New look
Selfridges
Mango
All saints

I can't ever imagine buying anything from
Boden
Fat face
Joules
Mint velvet
Joe browns

They're just not me but we're all different and I'm sure the PTA mums probably aren't keen on a lot of what I wear. Each to their own.

MingeofDeath · 09/07/2020 06:55

This thread is great for brands I have never heard of. Goes to browse online...

Bluesheep8 · 09/07/2020 13:27
  1. Charity shops and TK Maxx
Sooverthemill · 09/07/2020 14:17

I'm 62 and pretty much only buy online. I buy and wear clothes according to the fabric ( prefer natural) the style ( I'm 5'1 and easily swamped) and the retailer ethics ( so I no longer buy from shops which I know to not pay a living wage and if I discover they don't then I stop), their environmental policy and how they treat their customers and staff. I happen to never have bought from Primark as I've not lived anywhere near one and I wouldn't consider buying from the shops that cancelled orders and payments to suppliers at the outset of lockdown. I am by no means wealthy but able to buy pretty much what I fancy these days although some retailer still seem too expensive. I buy a lot in sales and with discount codes.

Actual retailers:
Hush
Boden ( petite range)
John Lewis as such a big range of stock
All Saints
Independent brands
Madewell
J crew
Jigsaw

I'm often inspired to lookout new retailers to me by these threads

Deathraystare · 09/07/2020 14:18

I am 60 (asks self: Am I really? Yes you are!). I cannot afford much but am aiming to buy less, more quality clothes. In the future that is!

I am size 18/20 I cannot wear Viscose/tencel/lyocell so that is most of the sho-s stock I cannot wear!

At the moment I normally live in tshirts and leggings/jeans.

I have a favourite pair of Monsoon Jeans. So soft, so comfy.

I go to Primark and Marks for t shirts.

I have some 'work' trousers from M&S and Debenhams . plus jackets but at the moment I do not need to wear 'proper' work stuff.

In the past I have worn stuff by Cos (also John Lewis Kiln stuff.
M&S
Debenhams
Next
Asos Curve -though most is aimed to those that like hick necks/show off tummies/legs/boobs whatever
Sometimes QVC - though I found out the leopard print trousers are dry clean only! Bugger!!

notquiteruralbliss · 12/07/2020 19:03

I am 60. For work I wear t shirts under sack dresses from anywhere that has something cheap and neutral ( I have things from Mango, Gap, H&M Seasalt, Cos and various charity shops) thick tights and brogues. At home I wear a mix of DMs, skinny jeans, oversize jumpers and T shirts, oversized parkas, trainers and shorts handed down from teenage / 20s DDs and breeches / gilets from Pikeur, Kingsland or Tattini.

nomorelove · 12/07/2020 20:33

36- Uniqlo , Monki , ASOS and topshop .

GinWithASplashOfTonic · 12/07/2020 20:37

I'm also late 28s. I buy a lot of stuff from
fat Face in the sales. I just find their stuff suits my shape and style. Also wear new look, m&s, H&M, supermarket stuff. Sometimes Next but I find it hit and miss
