I'm in my 50s and tend to get most work clothes from Next. I decided to spend a little bit more on clothes and got some stuff from Warehouse and Oasis - now they've gone so don't know where to buy better stuff from now. I don't like buying clothes online as I can't be bothered faffing about returning stuff and waiting for refunds. I tried Seasalt but dresses don't suit my shape.

I wouldn't shop in M and S as I just never find anything I like or Joules as all they ever seem to have are stripey tops.

SneakersandSocks · 02/07/2020 15:42

33, shop mainly at Monki, Zara, ASOS and H&M. Occasionally will buy from Topshop, Cos and Uniqlo for basics.

passthemustard · 02/07/2020 16:13

42

Silkfred
New Look
River island
Next
Dorothy Perkins

I think late 20s is way too young to think about being old and dressing appropriately 😬

Chochito · 02/07/2020 16:14

I'm 40. Buy most of my clothes at Zara, then also Mango and H&M. Maje when I'm feeling flush. Used to like the Kooples too but not seen anything nice there this year.

Caledonia and women.secret for bikinis and beachwear. Victoria's Secret and women.secret for most underwear and pyjamas. Victoria's Secret and Nike for gym and running clothes.

When I'm in the UK I used to pick up things in Topshop (jeans) but boycott Philip Green now.

LovingLen · 02/07/2020 16:20

62,

Seasalt, FatFace, Whitestuff and Next Tall mainly, I'm quite tall so a bit limited where I can shop but wear a lot of tunics and long cardigans.

In my late 20s I wouldn't have dreamt of wearing stuff like this.

Floisme · 02/07/2020 16:32
  1. I try and buy mainly second hand and my favourite shops are a local dress agency and market stall which I'm praying will survive the coming economic carnage. I particularly look out for Margaret Howell, Toast and (for knitwear) John Smedley.

If I'm buying new, I normally start with Cos, Uniqlo and the Toast sales. If I had a decent branch of H&M I'd still be there too, but the local one is rubbish and I can't be doing with their website. I think Zara had been having quite a decent season but they're too random for me to trust them online. Quite like Whistles but the quality makes me cross.

I don't buy into 'mumsy' for reasons other posters have given. Joules just isn't my thing - it's too jaunty for me. But I like the odd bit of plain Seasalt, especially their colours. (I'm not into pattern but I like strong colours.)
I still wear hoodies, never liked trainers but I wear leather plimsols, despise ready ripped jeans and always have done.

Apart from the Disney store, I don't rule anywhere out because of my age. I'm fully aware that my body has changed, as have my lifestyle and my tastes, but I prefer to look in a mirror, take photos or just trust my instincts. I'm sure I get it wrong plenty of times - I did when I was young too - but I don't stress it.

bleughhh · 02/07/2020 16:33

45 - Whistles, & Other Stories, Mango, Zara, Isabel Marant Etoile, Essentiel Antwerp, Hush, Topshop (mostly just shoes now - and jeans a bit), H&M.

Do not like Cos (shapes don't like me really) or Boden (but have occasional silly top for work).

Bionical89 · 02/07/2020 16:35
  1. TU, dorothy perkins, new look, ASOS and boohoo
bleughhh · 02/07/2020 16:35

And, yes, to trainers (every age can wear them if you like them - I like vejas and adidas - would like golden goose but not spending that much on trainers!). Ditto hoodies. Prefer sweatshirts though as easier to wear under a coat/jacket!

Bioprepper · 02/07/2020 16:43

late 30s here and i like
next
asos
some fatface
oliver bonas

I like the odd plain tshirt from boden and there trousers are usually good quality and fit well but dont tend to go for patterns

Dont like seasalt and only shop in joules for kids stuff but my youngest is starting to not like the style of these now so that wont be for much longer.

Bioprepper · 02/07/2020 16:43

oh forgot sainsburys for work clothes. Fab value!

Shmithecat2 · 02/07/2020 16:47

I'm 45 and tall, so it's limited choice for me.. Next, Asos, BooHoo, Wallis occasionally. Matalan is great sometimes though. LTS is closing down, so that's no longer on my list 🙁

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 02/07/2020 16:48

Mid 40s I shop in:

Cos
Topshop
Whistles
Zara
Levi’s
ASOS
Other Stories
Joanie
Monki
Used to love Warehouse for dresses

I don’t like the whole Joules, Whitestuff, Boden, Seasalt aesthetic, but think it can be nice on other people.

BestIsWest · 02/07/2020 16:57

57, 5’10 size 18.

Seasalt, White Stuff, M&S. John Lewis Kin.

Only wear plain stuff usually. Very rare for me to wear anything patterned unless it’s a scarf maybe. Maybe a stripe.

BestIsWest · 02/07/2020 16:58

I love the look of Cos but don’t live anywhere near one and it looks scary online.

grannycake · 02/07/2020 17:00

I'm 64 and I shop at Hush, White Company, All Saints, Tu and H&M mostly. Bit of TK Maxx as well

BestestBrownies · 02/07/2020 17:16

39 and detest shopping. Never understood anyone doing it for fun as it’s just a necessary chore to me when I need something.

Totally agree with a pp that quality has deteriorated massively in recent years and hate ‘fast fashion’ for its impact on the environment.

Also can’t stand wearing anything itchy/sweaty/uncomfortable for any reason, so stick with natural fabrics and loose fit wherever possible.

I buy most things on EBay these days and only buy new from M&S (everyday knickers and socks), and Uniqlo for quality basics and gym/sports wear.

thebabessavedme · 02/07/2020 18:30

late 50s

H&M
Mytheresa
Jules B
Guess
Aspiga
Wolf & Badger
Zara
All Saints
River Island

I also buy high end
LV
Mcqueen
Cavalli
Westwood
YSL
Hermes

XingMing · 02/07/2020 20:43

Lamentably, unless I win the lottery, the high end is likely to remain a fantasy, but while I'd agree that the leather goods from LV, YSL and Hermes are lovely, I'm less keen on extrovert clothes. I could do Vivienne Westwood, because our bodies are similar shapes, but never Cavalli or Gucci. I am far far too old for that amount of skin. So for me, at 63, in the event of a lottery win, I shall visit Loewe for a Puzzle bag and then ponder the rest.

XingMing · 02/07/2020 20:52

I briefly saw a woman I know, who once worked in my favourite posh clothes shop, at a car boot sale this morning wearing nice jeans and a lovely Italian cashmere jumper. I know she worked for 8 days to buy it, minding the shop. It was several years ago, but it was beautiful, and IIRC, it was much nearer £500 than £50, but she will handwash it and wear it forever, and it will always look fabulous. I recognised her, and the sweater, which I did not buy.

Griefmonster · 02/07/2020 20:57

45:
H&M
Zara
John Lewis Kin (in sale only)
Uniqlo
Gap (jeans only)
Sainsbury's

XingMing · 02/07/2020 20:59

If there is a point to my post, I suppose it's that you have to choose between a lot of clothes and a few perfect, but very expensive clothes. And that begs the question, can you be bothered to wash by hand and dry away from light. etc etc. I can't, but I regularly get muddy paw prints on everything I wear, so I machine wash stuff, and therefore don't buy high end cashmere, only Uniqlo or M&S....

emma6776 · 02/07/2020 21:02

41 and mainly buy from Whistles, Zara, TopShop, Cos, Saint Bert (amazing sweatshirts & hoodies) and FWP. Footwear wise I tend to live in flipflops / Tretorn pumps during the warmer months and Adidas Samba Rose trainers or flat ankle boots when it’s crappy. Avoid Joules, Whitestuff etc because of the fun linings, but have a couple of plain Boden dresses for work.

thebabessavedme · 02/07/2020 21:04

would like to point out that i have only been able to afford 'high end' since I got old! was 45 before I got my first 'designer' bag, tbf, i think when young and lovely whatever you put on will look nice, more effort is needed as everything heads south.

gincakecomps · 02/07/2020 21:08

Late 20s
Dorothy Perkins (including some workwear)
New look
Next (for nicer going out type dresses)
Very
Primark for underwear/socks

Have never worn ripped jeans. Would not wear the brands mentioned as I think of them as 'posh'.
