At what age did you stop wearing certain things etc trainers hoodies ripped jeans
At what age do you stop shopping in certain stores because your to old?
Just wondering really I tend to shop wherever next joules seasalt asda sainsburys hm I'm still young not as young I used to be late twenties dont want to dress to young no to old but my age really what did you tend to wear or shop late twenties early thirties?

The clothes people like to wear and feel comfortable in are not necessarily related to age, in that you can be 20 and have no interest in fashion or style or 89 and still taking an interest. I’d say it’s more about dressing for your shape not your age.

For me personally, since turning 40 it seems harder to wear cheaper clothes, and I’m bored of buying cheap and having to get rid of it after a year or so so would tend to avoid New Look, ASOS, Boohoo etc. But I don’t have a set of go to shops, I have all my clothes logged in Stylebook and have items from at least 65 different brands.

Beatrixpotterspencil · 03/07/2020 20:04

I’m 46
I like:
Cos
White company for knits
Sweaty Betty
Fjallraven (I hike/outdoors a lot)

evilharpy · 03/07/2020 20:28

I'm 40. I buy most of my clothes second hand to try and be as sustainable as possible, and so I can buy better quality stuff. I do buy some things new though. Brands I like include:

Jigsaw
Reiss
Jaeger
Max Mara
Hobbs (mainly for work and I'm picky which bits I like)
Karen Millen
Hugo Boss
LK Bennett
Cos
Hush
Warehouse and Oasis (weep)
Topshop
Whistles
Few bits from Primark like plain vests, t shirts and tights
H&M
Uniqlo
Asda for jeans, they fit me really well
Asos

I still wear ripped jeans sometimes. Hoodies aren't really my thing. There aren't really any shops I avoid because I feel too old but I do find that things from the likes of Boohoo and New Look are just shit quality and not worth wasting money on. There are shops I avoid because I just don't like the clothes. Next, Fat Face, White Stuff, most of Joules although I do have a waterproof (very plain) coat from there for the school run. Haven't been in a Dorothy Perkins in years.

CakeInMyFace · 03/07/2020 20:52

I'm 43 and I tend to buy from wherever if I like it! I have things from Hush, Zara, Fat Face, Next, Joules, Boden (not so much these days although I bought two play suits that I love this summer). The odd bits from H&M (Jean's and basics), Topshop has some nice blouses. Recently Jigsaw too.

I love clothes and wear what I like. I like skinny jeans with loose blouses, sometimes tucked in, sometimes not. Slogan sweatshirts, the odd hoody.

I do most clothes shopping online but would never not buy something based on where it's from.

Chillichutney1 · 03/07/2020 21:03

I’m 40 and I dont subscribe to the idea that certain shops are grumpy or mumsy. It depends on how things look on you and if they suit your shape/style etc

I shop at
All saints
Mint velvet
Hush
Zara
H&M
Uniqlo
Gap
Reiss
Whistles
Warehouse

minipie · 03/07/2020 21:03

I’m approaching 40. I seem to be buying increasing amounts of Joules because they cut for women with a small waist and larger bum and thighs (ie me), unlike many shops. Also they use cotton. I don’t go for their patterned or Breton stuff but have various basics in plain colours. Same applies to Boden.

I also have a whole load of things from other places. Could be anywhere from H&M/Topshop/TK Maxx to Selfridges/Liberty.

opinionatedfreak · 03/07/2020 21:11

I'm 42 and dress fairly classically - chino's, a t-shirt top and twin set style cardie is a bit of a summer uniform. I wear a blazer instead of a cardie if I have to be smart!

I shop in Boden/ Seasalt/ Joules primarily. I'll look in White Stuff/ Fat face but don't often buy stuff.
I usually buy cashmere from M&S.

If I HAVE to wear smart stuff I go to Hobbs and throw myself on the mercy of a sales assistant to find me something that looks vaguely OK.

NowIKnowWhataTVDinnerFeelsLike · 03/07/2020 21:16

@ladykuga which etsy sellers would you recommend? I've recently got into Etsy for interiors and like the idea for clothes but it's a bit overwhelming!

whiteroseredrose · 03/07/2020 21:30
  1. Very much not into clothes.

Jeans from M&S
Other stuff from Seasalt, John Lewis and TK Maxx.

MrDarcysMa · 03/07/2020 21:37

36:
Cos
Monki (the plain coloured stuff mainly)
H&M
ASOS white & ASOS design
Arket
Uniqlo

I think seasalt joules etc is Mumsy. Don’t really wear patterns apart from leopard print!

ladykuga · 03/07/2020 21:38

@NowIKnowWhataTVDinnerFeelsLike on Etsy I buy from Metamorphoza, clothesbylockerroom, FloAtelier, Kotytostylelab, MarcellaModa and Caramelfs. I treat myself to a couple of items each month. Some of the sales are pretty good when they happen.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 03/07/2020 21:43

Very interesting thread, I am 56
Me&Em
And other stories
White Company
Hush
Jigsaw
Zara
I would rather buy one nice thing than a few cheap things...

NowIKnowWhataTVDinnerFeelsLike · 03/07/2020 21:48

Thank you! Will take a look now!

notacooldad · 04/07/2020 00:11

55
Silk Fred
Zara
Mango
H&M
EMP for gigs and festival stuff.
weekend Doll
seamstress of Bloomsbury.
Arket.

AGoodYearfortheRoses · 04/07/2020 07:23

I’m late 40s and I guess my style is a cross between rock chick, art teacher and teenage boy - make of that what you will!

I like the style of Hush, Mint Velvet etc but tend to wait for the sales as I don’t think the quality is reflected in the prices. I get a lot in TK Maxx, some bits from Next (mostly due to the convenience) but more branded stuff eg Vila, Veto Moda although I do like their petite jeans. I like FatFace/White Stuff/Seasalt for the natural fabrics and they can be good for accessories - decent leather bags, unusual scarves etc. More and more lately though I’m leaning towards independent boutiques and stuff I see online - Instagram will be my downfall!

Crownofthorns · 04/07/2020 07:41

I’m 40 and currently a bit overweight at a size 16:

Hobbs
White Stuff
Fat Face
Boden
Oliver Bonas
Crew Clothing
Oasis (gutted they have gone into administration 😪)
Massimo Dutti
Polo Ralph Lauren
Lauren Ralph Lauren
TK Maxx (where I get several of the above vastly reduced!)
Charity shops

I do spend a lot more on handbags and jewellery (although usually preowned or at a hefty discount if I’m able to buy on sale). My favourite handbag brands are LV, Mulberry and Coach.

Beetlewing · 04/07/2020 07:43

49 and I now but most of my clothes from charity shops, vintage sites and vintage sellers on ebay - I'm not ashamed to say I'm now cultivating a look that will carry me through to a gloriously decadent old age where I hope to have an elderly farting dog in a shopping trolley, pink hair and mad hats

Themostwonderfultimeoftheyear · 04/07/2020 07:48

31 and only wear dresses. I have ones from Seasalt, Moromini, Boden and Duns. Buying from ethical and sustainable companies is really important to me and I get what I can second hand as well.

specialkitten · 04/07/2020 07:52

Mid thirties

H&M
Asos
Charity shops
Toast (in sale/for birthdays!)
eBay occasionally
Vintage shops

Try to buy second hand when possible but am also susceptible to a bit of fast fashion Blush

MinesaPinot · 04/07/2020 09:45

57 and I buy wherever I see something I like. I tend to lean towards Cos, H&M and Zara in the main, Uniqlo for basics. We have some really nice independents in the area where I live so I head there. Also John Lewis for a good spread across the brands. Not adverse to a Primark hit if I see a good one - ours is a bit small cramped and dark.

Very fond of All Saints for tops, sweatshirts etc.

The only place I avoid is Joules as I do find it a bit frumpy. Having said that my knee length rain jacket is from there and it's fab, and DH got a bargainous quilted jacket from their outlet store at Ashford.

Terralee · 04/07/2020 12:24

I'm 43.

I'm a bit restricted by budget!!

So I generally shop in:
River Island
Dorothy Perkins
New Look
Primark
Accessorize
F&F at Tesco
Next
Gap
M&S
Topshop
Office
Schuh

I wear ripped jeans & hoodies when it's cold on my days off...

Terralee · 04/07/2020 12:24

Ooh yes forgot Zara

Terralee · 04/07/2020 12:28

I wear trainers a lot especially my Adidas Superstars very smart & comfy

Goyle · 04/07/2020 12:37

Plus sized so restricted somewhat. I use
Simply Be for most things
Sainsbury's TU for accessories
Marks and Sparks for undies and swimwear
Skechers for trainers
Seasalt for dresses and striped tops
Collectif Camden Market for skirts and blouses

Unless I'm invited to an event, I don't GAF as long as I'm comfortable.

Crosswithlifeatm · 04/07/2020 12:38

I'm 60 and now shop at white stuff, seasalt,M&S for basics like jeggins, plain t-shirts,Monsoon(though that's going down hill,)
In my 20 it was Dorothy Perkins,Topshop,M&S as they still did good undies then,Anouk,East,Laura Ashley as it then sold lots of fine Indian cotton dresses, tops and trousers.Camden market whenever I went to London.
