Amethyst I think I started that craze on the Hush thread . I ended up with 4 pairs as they were finally reduced to £15, so have navy , grey, burgundy and purple striped .. They have worn brilliantly ( and ill never need to buy any joggers again.. not that That stops me spending it seems !) Grin

Laska2Meryls · 08/07/2020 09:47

Annoying Cherries which trousers were they?

Saurus72 · 08/07/2020 09:50

@slipperyeel Beautiful mugs make all the difference! I use a S’well bottle for my water which is a beautiful thing and keeps it really cold. I’ve been considering one of these for my coffee - totally don’t need but it is a very beautiful thing www.toa.st/uk/range/lucy+rutter+ceramics.htm

@Laska2Meryls V interesting about your DD working at Liz Earle. I’ve always wondered what they’re like to work for. I love their shower gel/body lotion, smells amazing.

Have a scented (soy) candle burning today. Grey and rainy so it’s a lovely thing. Small things have made a really big difference to wfh - I’ve bought flowers every single week which has been a joy. Mainly just freesias because they’re cheap and smell gorgeous but I’ve been treated to a couple of really gorgeous bunches from the florist too. I’ve learned they are nice, but the £4 freesias are just as nice. Good coffee has been essential too - freshly ground Allpress beans, mmmmm 😊

AmethystMoonShine · 08/07/2020 10:50

@Laska2Meryls ah yes I remember now, I think you posted a photo of your purple ones... you inspired me Grin

ilovecherries · 08/07/2020 11:26

Well, DHL says they will be delivered today. But they also said that yesterday and Monday. Laska, I got the pull on linen ones. I’d been adamant I wasn’t buying them as it seemed a ridiculous price for linen trousers. But I tried all the cheap ones, and none were right. Also got a white linen shirt and the zoya top, both sale items.

Moominmammaatsea · 08/07/2020 12:09

@slipperyeel, I’m currently reading ‘They Knew Mr Knight’ and I’ve previously read ‘Greenbanks’ and ‘They Were Sisters’; do you have any further Dorothy Whipple recommendations?

It was one of the most pleasing days of my recent years when I found a job lot of about 20 Persephone Books in my local charity shop for 50p each - even better, a number of them still had their book marks!

I live up north, but I have managed to spend circa five minutes in the actual shop, before being dragged off to the British Museum. Happily, there was a Community Clothing pop-up sale on Lambs Conduit Street at the time.

My post-lockdown fantasy is to take myself off to London to head to the Persephone shop to savour those glorious end papers and beautiful spines. I think I could definitely become a PB geek and start collecting to fill in the gaps in the numbers I have.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 08/07/2020 12:12

I live in central London @Moominmammaatsea
Best time ever to visit is now, very low tourist numbers and you can book yourself a timed ticket and browse all the museums and galleries with no big crowds as they gradually open. I’m traipsing off to the national gallery this weekend.

Saurus72 · 08/07/2020 12:27

V envious of you living in central London @Whatthefoxgoingon . I would go like a shot to an Exhibition if I didn’t have to get on the train/tube to get there which isn’t an appealing prospect.
One of the things I’m really missing is wandering around London. Pre-lockdown we went regularly to art exhibitions (last one was Aubrey Beardsley at Tate Britain, fab) then for cocktails and food. Just can’t imagine doing that now - craving art. Online exhibitions not doing it..,

Whatthefoxgoingon · 08/07/2020 13:00

Well I say central but I actually live on the zone1/2 borders Smile. I have an electric car so I can drive in without paying the congestion charge.

I agree that online exhibitions are no good compared to the real thing. I missed the Tutankhamen exhibit at the saatchi grrrr....

BubblegumFactory · 08/07/2020 13:38

All you Toast officianados, can I ask about sizing? I have never even looked at Toast stuff before, I don’t usually spend that much on clothes but was drawn there and have seen a lovely looking blouse. Is there stuff on the small side as a rule?
I’m somewhere between a 14 and 16 usually.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 08/07/2020 14:04

I find their sizing very generous. Occasionally something will be cut on the small side. I have clothes in size 10 to 16, depending on how loose I like to wear it.

ilovecherries · 08/07/2020 14:14

I pretty much wear my normal size in Toast. If you are sitting between sizes I’d go down.

slipperyeel · 08/07/2020 14:25

@Moominmammaatsea
Other Dorothy Whipples to enjoy are Someone a Distance, and The Priory.

Other Persephone books I recommend are consequences, family roundabout, brook evans and the village. They are such beautiful editions.

There is a nice toast podcast on Vanessa Bell, all feels part of this elegant sensibility where beauty matters.

AmethystMoonShine · 08/07/2020 14:42

@BubblegumFactory I usually size down in dresses and tops and knitwear. So I'm a pretty standard 12 (edging towards a generous 12) and I take a 10 or S in those items.
For trousers and skirts I'm a 12 and they're not usually at all loose, often a wee bit snug. But then. I am pear shaped, with a generous rear Grin
The clothing is all based on a person of 5'6'' ish (might be 5'7''), to help you with length.
The reviews on the Toast site are a good guide to sizing/fit and their customer services is really good at providing exact measurements for garments if you enquire specifically.

Boiledeggandtoast · 08/07/2020 14:47

I also love The Persephone Biannually magazine. There was a really interesting piece about the Bauhaus textile artist Otti Berger in the latest edition.

Squiz81 · 08/07/2020 19:03

Oooh I hadn’t heard of Persephone books. I’ve just had a google, I feel like another expensive door may have been opened in my life...

ilovecherries · 08/07/2020 19:14

Well, that went well. I’ve been looking for the perfect linen trousers. Tried all the usual suspects for under £25. None have been right. Mainly linen blend, so scratchy. Nasty thick waistbands. Garish colours. Too flappy. Sent for the Toast ones ‘to try’ because who seriously will pay that price for linen trousers. Well. I’m in love. They are perfect. They tick every box. Nooooooo!

slipperyeel · 08/07/2020 20:00

They will probably last 5 x as long @ilovecherries

Moominmammaatsea · 08/07/2020 20:31

@slipperyeel, many thanks for the recommendations, I will definitely check them out.

@Boiledeggandtoast, thank you so much for reminding me - I had put away my spring/summer Biannually magazine (pristine and unopened) for a lockdown rainy day. Well, it has rained dogs and cats all week where we are so I think it’s legitimate to open it this evening. I will seek out the article you recommended.

goldpendant · 08/07/2020 20:39

Can we just admire this new dress for a moment?

Moominmammaatsea · 08/07/2020 20:41

@ilovecherries, when will you ever learn? Nearly two threads later, and I hate to point out that that is the point of Toast; you buy cheap, you buy twice, or thrice, as my very frugal grannie would say! 😁 Your new linen trousers will see you right for many happy years to come. Enjoy!

paintyhands · 08/07/2020 20:48

I’m still dithering over the Ida dress and wondering if I’d find something elsewhere I might get more wear out of. Do any of you recommend other shops that might be worth looking at? Ideally similar quality to Toast (and at their sale price point). Thanks!

Whatthefoxgoingon · 08/07/2020 20:50

Gah that is right up my alley @goldpendant

goldpendant · 08/07/2020 20:54

I think I neeeeed it.

paintyhands · 08/07/2020 20:54

@goldpendant I love that!
