TOAST

goldpendant · 29/05/2020 21:57

Now I never thought I'd say this, not until my mid 40's at least, but I feel like celebrating the wonders of TOAST! I'm not sure I'm game for the wintry stuff but their summer dresses are just perfect. For years I've longed for the undone, easy linen look but usually end up looking like a sack of potatoes... not this summer my friends!

My dad earlier said I looked "outrageously well sorted" in my new orange linen number - I think he meant well put together, and I've just got the navy on sale on JL. Yipppeeeee!

Has anybody bought the tie neck dress? I am a 12 or 14 ( sadly probably
closer to 14 currently). I am quite short - 5 foot and busty. I am ordering from NZ so postage is expensive and I would have to pay duty - trying to decide if worth it.

I have the prairie tie neck from the winter sale. I haven’t worn it yet because of lockdown here. I bought my normal size 12 and it fits well. I’m a 34FF. I’m 5’7 though so you may need it taken up.
ilovecherries · 05/06/2020 09:53

@fizzpopbang123

I guess I’m not sure if it’s too big - there is a lot of volume in the skirt, but that’s intentional, I suppose it’s more about asking if it works. yes, that's what I meant, too some peoples eye, it would look too big, but I do think it is intentionally that way. You either recognise that, and love it, or you don't I guess.

Have you decided to keep it yet? @ilovecherries

I think I probably will keep it - I love the fabric and it’s such an easy wear dress. Because it’s fitting well across the shoulders, I don’t think it’s swamping me, and rather than looking oddly huge, it’s looking like an intentional design on the skirt. I wouldn’t (couldn’t!) have paid the original £225 for it, but at £70 I feel it’s a good buy.
Growingboys · 05/06/2020 10:21

I don't get the love for Toast at all. Their clothes are so frumpy and sexless.

Maybe suitable for spinster painters, or Guardian journalists who don't want to make any new friends.

I have never said to anyone you look nice where's it from and have them say Toast.

ZaraW · 05/06/2020 11:06

You don't have to get it, it's not your style nobody's forcing you to wear clothes from Toast.

I don't get the love for Next, DP, River Island etc it's not my style.

AmethystMoonShine · 05/06/2020 11:08

@growingboys I'm not sure lovers of Toast are aiming for 'sexy', so if your aim is sexy, no you probably won't get the love for Toast. Grin

Whatthefoxgoingon · 05/06/2020 11:11

I think Toast wearers generally don’t give a fuck about what others think. I certainly only dress to please myself and have no interest in appearing sexy.

houseforanartlover · 05/06/2020 11:27

When I was a younger woman, and more in the thrall of societal expectation, it was important to me to dress in a way that made me look 'sexy' and more conventionally attractive to the male gaze. Then I began to realise how enormously limiting that was, and how many other things in the world could be important, which included experimenting more with different styles of clothing, hair, etc. It feels amazing! And I feel like a better mother to my preteen daughter because of it - she's free to challenge expectations too. The main message I try to give her is that women should have the right to choose to be any way they want to be - so feel free to wear whatever you want, behave freely, challenge sexism etc. So if you don't 'get' Toast, that's completely fine - dress however you like but let others be free to enjoy their own style!

ZaraW · 05/06/2020 11:31

I'm sure OP you meant it as an insult but I would quite like to be mistaken for a painter or Guardian journalist even though some people may think I'm a spinster lol.

I completely agree. I also defy anyone to say Sophie Raworth doesn’t look good in the navy and white Toast dress she often wears.
ilovecherries · 05/06/2020 11:33

Yeah, I only dress in order to please other people and look sexy. FFS. And ‘spinster’! As if bagging a man was any great achievement. What I don’t get is why some people feel the need to come onto a perfectly pleasant thread where some people are discussing something harmless that they like, and start making nasty, disparaging comments. Now THAT confuses me a damn sight more than people who like Toast.

fizzpopbang123 · 05/06/2020 11:37

The thing I hate most on the threads asking for opinions are the "it doesn't flatter your figure" comments, meaning it's not bodycon enough. Or that when a poster is clearly slim that they should/must show this off as if it's a badge of honour of which they should be proud.

This is clearly a thread for poster who like Toast and the simple, well cut but oversized styles they make. If I see a thread about River Island I know 99.9% I am not going to like the discussion or have anything to add, so I don't comment.

sminkipinki · 05/06/2020 11:45

Me too Grin

I couldn't give a fuck if someone who uses the word 'spinster' to describe a woman who has chosen not to marry thinks I look 'frumpy' anyway.

I aspire to look like an artistic Guardian-reading farm-hand, frankly. Toast does the job beautifully.

AmethystMoonShine · 05/06/2020 11:46

I think I’ve found my people Grin

Living how what @Whatthefoxgoingon said is so clearly true. Toast lovers are those of us that have reached a stage, no matter our age, where we really don’t give a fuck what others think. We do as @houseforanartlover and @ilovecherries say, dress to please ourselves. With Toast that is is often beautiful prints/weave, finishing, cut and style. That’s what we enjoy.... for ourselves. Certainly not for men, or even other women, but for ourselves.

UrbanDoughnut · 05/06/2020 11:46

Sort of agree with @Growingboys without the added bits Grin I've clicked on every link in here and everything just looks so staid and shapeless and like something my grandma would have worn. And I'm 48 so maybe their target audience? I'd feel 30 years older in their stuff

My granny would definitely have worn it. She was renowned for her elegance and stylishness so that’s another plus.
Chienloup · 05/06/2020 12:17

I love Toast. I don't think you can get quality like it anywhere else in the high street. The fabrics are clearly well chosen and there is a clear aesthetic to their collections, which carry over the seasons year-on-year. I'm 42, and I think my first Toast purchase was about 13 years ago which was a beautiful layered grey and pink skirt which I wore with a pair of their fabulous legwarmers. They no longer do the legwarmers sadly, but I have two pairs from back then which are in perfect condition still.

So I was in my 20s when I started buying from Toast, but I have never been described as frumpy. In fact quite the opposite, it has been a running joke with my friends for years that I am the one who always looks put together even for a quick drink in the village pub, or the school run.

sminkipinki · 05/06/2020 12:20

Mine too alsohuman. I really loathe the ageism on here sometimes.

I am mid-40s, have completely grey hair (actually it's silver Grin), wear 'frumpy' Toast clothes and look fucking ace, imo.

I also wear 'old-lady scent' too. Because stylish women know beautiful, well-made classics when they see, or smell, them.

Oh, tell me your favourite scents, pinki. I love classic perfume but I ran out just before lockdown so have been looking for new ideas. My favourites are all more winter perfumes, so always on the look out for lighter summer perfumes.

@Zinnia

Anyway, Toast-lovers, I have this Toast jumpsuit that I only ever wear on holiday (ie when I have a tan) as the colour is too washed-out for me normally. Have purchased a tub of Dylon indigo dye, and am about to take the plunge. Quite nervous, but I've only worn it 9 times in the last two summers which isn't really enough, especially as France is looking off the agenda this year.
That should work well. It will be lovely in indigo.
Zinnia · 05/06/2020 14:02

For some reason I lost the first half of that post..

Thank god some people do hate Toast, it's hard enough getting what I want in their sales as it is... Wink

I get a lot of joy in wearing well-cut, well-made clothes in good fabrics, and felt fabulous yesterday in my Toast khakis and new denim smock, ready to roll up my sleeves (or rather, give them a subtle fold) and get the job DONE.

(I know a few Guardian journalists. The one who wears Toast is the best-dressed of the lot)

Zinnia · 05/06/2020 14:03

@ilovecherries thanks you have emboldened me! I'm going in...

Railingsohno · 05/06/2020 14:17

My order arrived and it’s going back!

The waist belt is huge! I’m a size 8/10 and I would need an extra hole punched plus loads of belt flapping around. Annoying as I wouldn’t say my waist is that small.

The jacket is lovely, on one side but the inside is an Aztec type pattern in yellow that I really don’t like. I think for £195 I want to love both sides. I may reorder and see if I get a nicer one next time. The shape is fab,
