TOAST

Now I never thought I'd say this, not until my mid 40's at least, but I feel like celebrating the wonders of TOAST! I'm not sure I'm game for the wintry stuff but their summer dresses are just perfect. For years I've longed for the undone, easy linen look but usually end up looking like a sack of potatoes... not this summer my friends!

My dad earlier said I looked "outrageously well sorted" in my new orange linen number - I think he meant well put together, and I've just got the navy on sale on JL. Yipppeeeee!

Yes the middle aged thread ...
I am happy with my number 111s. I have very curly hair. I like a stripey top, sturdy shoes and socks with sandals, shoot me now.

Alsohuman · 18/06/2020 23:50

I love the irony of someone who watches Escape to the Country describing someone else’s fashion choices as middle aged on that thread! I, too, am a big fan of Breton tops and flat shoes. I’ve never had the guts to wear socks with sandals Vix, I salute you!

Railingsohno · 19/06/2020 00:16

@Moominmammaatsea that’s a stunning coat/dress. Really lovely colour. I love that dark olive shade, really versatile. Looks good with loads- stripes, cream, denim, pink, ....enjoy your trying on! 💗

Railingsohno · 19/06/2020 00:24

Yes it kind of morphed weirdly that thread. I think the OP just wanted to feel more stylish, whatever form that took. I remember that amazing thread on the capsule wardrobe where that woman from Australia I think spent ages creating a capsule wardrobe. The amount of time and detail she’d gone into to choose each item was amazing. It was a good thread even if you weren't into her style which was very minimalist and classic.

AmethystMoonShine · 19/06/2020 06:16

@Moominmammaatsea can I ask about the sizing of the coat dress? I’m a decent 12 in real life but usually a 10 in Toast dresses. How did you feel it was size wise?

paintedwolf · 19/06/2020 08:21

Ha, I am seeing a bit of a trend on this thread as a curly haired, glasses wearing, striped top wearer and owner of many flat shoes and I have no desire to look like a TV presenter.

Yorkshirelass04 · 19/06/2020 08:34

Where's the thread that says Breton tops are bad? That's outrageous.

As I said previously, my style is eclectic and toast is one of my personas. I do tend to like simple clean cuts and fabric that is soft against my skin, regardless of style.
@Saurus72, thank you, yes, it is, but she is incredibly resilient and is coping amazingly well. And sometimes clothes aren’t just clothes, they’re protective armour or a much-needed diversion from the horror or mundanity of everyday life - which is why I’ve been enjoying this thread so much. I really hope I haven’t put a downer on it for everyone - PLEASE talk to me about dresses! 😀
I couldn’t agree more with what you said about clothes being more than clothes. My young adult daughter, who is home with us shielding, was talking about this yesterday as well. We were reflecting on how sad an experience shopping sounds at the moment, and how much diversion and happiness it brings us both to talk about clothes, play with clothes, think about how items work or don’t work together. I know we have that luxury because our basic needs are more than adequately met, and even though life is frightening and boring in equal measure, in any given moment our bubble is safe and comfortable, but I’d be lost without clothes chat just now.

ilovecherries · 19/06/2020 09:09
@Moominmammaatsea as you were keen to chat about beautiful clothing 💗...
Is this what you got?

I love that. In Spain last year I bought a (much lesser quality) coat dress not dissimilar to that in style from Zara and I’ve worn it loads. It hasn’t washed that well though and is beginning to look a bit tired. So tempted to replace it with that.

Oh god, I’d love to wear socks with sandals. The comfort is unimaginable. Do I need a special sock/sander combo for this experiment?
Countmeout · 19/06/2020 09:16

Yes it’s lovely to be distracted by clothes. It’s a great escape.

Laska2Meryls · 19/06/2020 09:17

Cherries that would look so good on you , I think its an absolute classic definitely an investment piece.
I must thank who ever first mentioned the JL price match on their own sale stuff..
Have bought several Toast things from them this sale and all have been matched to the lowest price.
The cotton work wear jacket in blue I am especially pleased with for 55! But I also had the Anni skirt from them and olive linen top.. all price matched as well Smile

thedevilinablackdress · 19/06/2020 09:17

Yes, it needs a bit of thought. And nice, interesting socks. Chunky ones with Birkenstocks is a good place to start. I also wear socks with my Tevas.
Have a look at the en Brogue blog or Instagram. She does excellent socks and sandals.

Laska2Meryls · 19/06/2020 09:24

Love Toast but usually only buy in sales . I had the zoya dress when first reduced in JL and was chuffed when they refunded me the difference on that also .Im now waiting for the workwear dress
Also bought the Triangle dress and the brick espadrilles .. its getting expensive,!

Countmeout · 19/06/2020 10:06

Yes now I know about the price match I would buy more in the first reduction and cross my fingers for a further drop.

I’m not sure I’m ready for socks with sandals, my daughters would think I’d lost it completely. I do think they look good though.

I think that possibly is Toast on their own website dropped as far as it’ll go this time. Anyone remember if it went to 70% last time. It’s on so few things even if it does, more likely Stuff will reappear in a later sale.
There’s a few things I would like that haven’t gone into sale this time.

Saurus72 · 19/06/2020 10:11

Could not agree more re: clothes being greater than the sum of their parts. And yes, why visiting the shops with the restrictions in place will not be happening for me - nothing pleasurable about it at all. Toast shops are one of my favourites to shop in - I tend to go either to Cambridge or Islington and the staff are lovely. It feels really special - trying on a few things, finding out which things I though I would love actually are end-of-days disasters but then finding an unexpected gem and (usually) choosing one dress to buy. I love the planning process, and my favourite times are at the changing of the seasons - August/September buying boots, coats etc and March-May buying summer dresses/sandals.

A massive part of the joy is imagining what I’ll wear to go to that exhibition at the Hayward, or for my Mum’s birthday etc etc. I never keep anything ‘for best’ - if it’s in my wardrobe it can get worn anywhere. Which is why, if I can I really like to get expensive clothes in sales, so there’s less worry about spilling something on my new top etc that cost a bomb. Does anyone remember Jaeger Black? Those clothes were stunning - and in the Jaeger outlet store near me, £250 silk dresses which were fabulous were regularly marked down to £50. So I bought quite a few, wore them without worrying and always felt brilliant. The fact is I feel better when I wear nice clothes. But, more than that, I love knowing that I have things that suit me, I love wearing, are comfortable and feel like ‘me’. Not having an outfit panic or feeling like I have nothing to wear is brilliant.

Yobringbackthe90s · 19/06/2020 10:11

is it just me or is this site very very very expensive? Confused i think i will stick to the toast you put your jam on

Floisme · 19/06/2020 10:19

Count it does normally come down to 70% but not on everything. It's basically Toast Roulette.

Laska2Meryls · 19/06/2020 10:28

Jaeger black was fab.Saurus we also had an outlet at Gunwharf Quays which is easy for me to get to..
I think its gone now though, and for obvious reasons I haven't been there for a while .
I have seen Jaegar in TK maxx also butas always with them you do have to be careful / lucky

Laska2Meryls · 19/06/2020 10:30

I sent back the Cercle bag as thought 95 was too much still , but niw thinking that it wont go down any further Sad
It was really nice..

Moominmammaatsea · 19/06/2020 10:39

@AmethystMoonShine, I’m an inverted triangle shape and 5’8.5” in height and I usually opt for a size 10 or medium in Toast (I prefer a bit of room to move in my clothes and I especially hate feeling restricted around my middle). I would say the coat dress is a neat fit through the shoulders (a perfect fit on me as I’m wider through the shoulders than my hips) and is less voluminous through the body than many other Toast dresses. I plan to wear it mainly as a dress but it will still do as a comfortable coat over a (dare I say it, a Breton top, and my new Maud skirt or a denim pinafore dress.

Saurus72 · 19/06/2020 10:53

I hadn’t taken much notice of the coat dress but now I have I’m slightly obsessed. Seems to be quite a few in stock on the Toast website but for £125. Think I will wait to see if there are further reductions.

AmethystMoonShine · 19/06/2020 11:20

Thanks @Moominmammaatsea I’ve gone for a 12 as I have a broad back/ shoulders and like it as a coat in particular and so want to be able to get it on over a tee without it being tight. I want it quite wafty Grin

There do seem to be a few in stock though so I’ll take my chances and return for a ten if it’s too large. If they’re all gone then it wasn’t meant to be. I’m still choking a bit at 125 pounds v the 75 on JL to be honest Shock

AmethystMoonShine · 19/06/2020 11:21

If it gets reduced again and they’re still in stock I’ll return and return order. I did that a while ago with a long sleeve denim dress and saved over 20 pounds.

thedevilinablackdress · 19/06/2020 11:27

It's not cheap Yobring and that's why everyone is so enthused about the reductions on this thread.
The quality is generally excellent. Stuff lasts for years and years
