Dungarees on adults

Runningforfood · 23/05/2020 08:54

How do people feel about adults wearing dungarees?!

I’ve fancied some for ages and just ordered these: lucyandyak.com/collections/corduroy-dungarees

But now wondering what on earth I put with them top/shoes wise...and if I’ll just look silly 😂.

Any mumsnetters have dungaree success?!

I love mine - have Lucy & Yaks in a couple of colours and have the longer dress. I could not give a sh!t what anyone else thinks - I love them, they're so practical (that front pocket is so handy), comfortable and I think they look great. They are hard wearing and wash well in my experience (had mine a couple of years). I know we can all feel self conscious about ourselves but it makes me feel sad when I think of the time I've wasted on my life thinking "can I/should !?" over clothing.

Yes you can, yes you should

TooMinty · 24/05/2020 10:51

I like a pinafore too, denim or cord. My colleague told me I looked like a Minion but doesn't stop me 😂

NameChange84 · 24/05/2020 10:52

I hate them, think they look dreadful and childish.

Lostvoiced · 24/05/2020 10:56

Love them. Life is too short to worry if other people will like them.
I'm kind of an artsy hippy type so I would wear them in a second. I have a dungaree dress but it rides up like nobody's business!

MikeUniformMike · 24/05/2020 14:55

I've posted a few times about L&Y.

I am a size 8, 5'4". The size S Luna were fine on me but the same size in Umi swamped me. I love the Luns ones but didn't like the others - too Andy Pandy for me. I'd trust their size guide

I didn't like the printed ones.

dudsville · 24/05/2020 16:00

I have the L&Y black corduroy dungarees. They are fabulous, and I'm usually a very maturely-dressed person. I wear them with dark button down small print tops. I feel like a child in them, certainly, but they do make me happy!

Notredamn · 24/05/2020 16:16

Lucy and Yak have played a blinder on here recently in terms of covert ads and have converted people. I like denim dungarees but without being awful L&Y is a brand that only very few pull off.

17CherryTreeLane · 24/05/2020 16:30

I have a black denim pair and love them. I wear them rolled up, with leopard print trainers and red lippy!

hellotoday27 · 24/05/2020 16:38

Love them on other people but they wouldn't suit me as I'm the wrong shape. I think you need to be quite slim and relatively small boobed to look good.
They're a hard look to get right but if you look good in them, go for it.
(I'd love to be able to wear them and normally not overly worried about what people think of my clothes but I look truly awful in them even back in the late 80's when I was young)

dontgobaconmyheart · 24/05/2020 16:45

Honestly? I think they often look great styled in photos on instagram etc, at good angles and styled well on someone with good style they can look very cool.

I don't think I've ever once seen anyone in real life (myself included) look good in them. They just often look a bit contrived (especially accompanied by the ubiquitous breton and some 'jazzy' converse). L&Y have been very savvy with the instagram bloggers IMO.

As an aside I do think it is important to just wear what you want and like, it is so so subjective isnt it.

GinWithASplashOfTonic · 24/05/2020 16:56

I really like the look. Unfortunately my boobs don't agree

MikeUniformMike · 24/05/2020 17:05

As much as I have praised L&Y I forgot to say that I only like the Luna ones. I didn't like the denim ones and I know I wouldn't like the cord ones, but that's me. I didn't like the mini pini as it only has one pocket.

I have denim ones from Gap. The Fat Face ones look nice, but I have lots of dungarees so I can't have them. I wear them loose fitting and don't undo the straps for loo visits.

dudsville · 24/05/2020 17:25

I can also recommend Sugarhill for dungarees. I have a smart cropped denim pair and have recently bought a black linen pair, both of which can be worn at work without feeling silly.

readwritelove · 24/05/2020 17:39

I’m 51 and I wear them and my teenage daughters don’t even laugh, so I’m going to carry on! I might buy myself a pinafore dress in the winter, too.

RedRed9 · 24/05/2020 17:45

Absolutely love them.

Unfortunately I’m too tall for them so they end up up my bum! 😂

Each to their own @NameChange84 but what’s the problem with looking ‘childish’? I don’t want to wear grown up office wear all the time.

NameChange84 · 24/05/2020 18:07

@RedRed9 If you don’t mind looking childish then that’s fine, but I do. I don’t by any means wear office wear unless it’s for an interview but I’d feel very odd and uncomfortable wearing the same sort of thing that I stopped wearing in primary school.

MostlyAmbridgeandcoffee · 24/05/2020 18:13

I’ve just got some - pregnant and decided I could definitely get away with them pregnant. Who knows if I fall in love with them I may continue afterwards !!

wedding2021 · 24/05/2020 18:25

Op we need a pic!

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 24/05/2020 18:33

I have two black pairs, one from Whistles which are about five years old, and another from about three years ago from Boden. I wear them with t-shirts, Breton tops, or skinny fit jumpers, and either trainers or DM monkey boots. I have also occasionally worn them to work with a pussy bow blouse and brogues.

Mine are fairly fitted/tailored. I am not a huge fan of really baggy dungarees, and not that keen on printed ones personally, although I know they look great on other people.

MikeUniformMike · 24/05/2020 18:35

I am curious as to what clothes should I be looking at. Is there a Saga equivalent for clothes?

Obviously I should have given up mini skirts at 35. Grin I find mini pinafores tend to ride up too much when I sit.

Chewbecca · 24/05/2020 18:42

I’m short and fat and love my Seasalt dungarees. I suspect I look like a fool but I don’t care.

Jolonglegs · 24/05/2020 19:09

I love them and have worn them for years: they match my arty persona. Currently wearing a pair from BooHoo, but have loads - probably need to have a clearout.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 24/05/2020 19:22

DD(20) has these in thin black cotton. They are bit sack like but she would look lovely even in a sack.

EllaPaella · 24/05/2020 20:26

I have two pairs of dungarees and I love them. Pics below are ones I've posted previously on the 'what am I wearing' thread. The black pair are slim fit soft denim from Run and Fly, lovely and soft denim. Second pair are slightly looser from Gap. I prefer them for summer/warmer months as I like to wear them with either sandals or trainers and don't think they work so well with extra layers over the top.
I'm 41. I hate that bollocks about women only wearing an outfit according to their age.

Could not agree more.
